Converting DVDs to MPEG4 for my Treo 650

I just got a Treo and want to convert some video (DVD or otherwise) to be able to use it on my device. I thought I had to convert them to MPEG4, but I'm not actually sure. Assuming I do need to convert them to MPEG4, how can I do that? Any ideas of good software packages?
