How come WINGS (the TV series) isn't on DVD?
I think it's a crime that shows like SEINFELD and FRASIER are released on DVD while one of the true classic sitcoms of the 90s -- WINGS -- is ignored.
This show had one of the all-time great ensemble casts (Thomas Haden Church, Tony Shaloub, Crystal Bernard, Roy Biggins) and some of the best writing. Yeah, it jumped the shark when Joe and Helen got married, but that wasn't until it already had a number of great seasons.
Now would be a great time to start releasing this show on DVD since Thomas Haden Church is getting a lot of good notices for his role in SIDEWAYS.
In honor of WINGS, I have designed a possible cover for the 1st season release.

I loved wings as well but I really doubt it even had 1/3 ratings of shows your comparing it too. Give it some time, I sure we see it if tv ondvd continues to sell so well.

This show used to be on more than Seinfeld. Probably 22 hours a day. Not a breakaway hit, but good enough to be on the air as long as it was. I enjoyed the first few seasons. Tony Shaloub was the stand out in the latter seasons, after all the other characters had run their course.

For anybody that cares, the show apparently ran from 1990-1997.

Thomas Haden Church just signed up to be the voice of dimwitted crow "Brooks" in a "live action/CGI" version of Charlotte's Web. Dakota Fanning plays Fern, Julia Roberts is the voice of Charlotte, and other cast includes Oprah Winfrey (Gussy), Cedric the Entertainer (Golly), John Cleese (Samuel the sheep), Steve Buscemi (Rat Templeton), Andre 3000 (Elwyn, with Church's Brooks), and Kathy Bates and Reba McEntire (Bitsy and Betsy). The film will be directed by Gary Winick ("13 Going on 30") from a script by Susannah Grant ("Erin Brockovich") and Karey Kirkpatrick ("Chicken Run"). All this is per the Hollywood Reporter; no info on when this will be ready for theaters.
I don't know if this is a big enough role for Church to encourage Paramount to tie in a Wings release, but then again I'm not so sure Sideways is either (maybe if that film gets good buzz at Oscar time). My point is that Church's name is certainly appearing more often lately than it has been in a while. But is it enough to get the studio to tie-in with a Wings release? Let's see what the other, more main stars of the show are doing lately:
Tim Daly tried to get going last year with a new TV series called "Eyes", but apparently it wasn't picked up. He's now busy producing a movie with Neve Campbell and Jessica Lange called "The Mermaids Singing", due in 2006.
Steve Weber appears soon in a new-for-TV musical adaption remake of "Reefer Madness", if you can believe that! He's currently filming "Stephen King's Desperation" (mini-series) to air later this year.
Crystal Bernard was part of the cast of the little-seen Christmas special this past year "Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus", and that's the first thing she's done in three years. Doesn't look like anything new's on the horizon.
If Paramount's waiting to tie in a Wings release to a big "tentpole" film release of one of the stars, then it looks like we'll be waiting a looooong time to get Wings on DVD. Then again, Paramount's not Columbia/Sony, and doesn't worry about that as much. So anything's possible...maybe they just haven't gotten to it yet.

Wings was a show I watched regularly. I really enjoyed it. But I probably would skip it on DVD. Half hour comedies, aside from some South Park, just don't meet my DVD buying standard.
Ah, Crystal Bernard Put her on the cover and I may change my mind!
And getting the character's name and the actor's name mixed up - so funny! To clear up any confusion:
Timothy Daly .... Joseph 'Joe' Montgomery Hackett (as Tim Daly)
Steven Weber .... Brian Michael Hackett
Crystal Bernard .... Helen Chappel Scarpacci Hackett
David Schramm .... Roy Biggins
Rebecca Schull .... Fay Evelyn Schlob Dumbly DeVay Cochran
Thomas Haden Church .... Lowell Mather (1990-1995)
Tony Shalhoub .... Antonio Scarpacci (1991-1997)
Farrah Forke .... Alex Lambert (1992-1994)
Amy Yasbeck .... Casey Chappel Davenport (1994-1997)

I love this show, too. Once it hit USA, it was the best part of staying home sick from work (aside from missing work). Antonio is one of my favorite TV characters ever.
