Star Wars: Empire at War

Didn't see a post yet. Today is the first I've heard of this. It appears the game is still very early in development, so here's to hoping they get it right:

Star Wars: Empire at War preview

I have been really disappointed by all the SW strategy games. Rebellion felt too bogged down, Force Commander didn't play well if I recall correctly, and since I don't usually like the AoE engines, Galactic Battlegrounds was dull. So, I'm still waiting for one that is fun. I've always thought a combination of Homeworld's space battles (minus resource collecting) with Ground Control's ground game mushed into one as Star Wars might be nice, but I am not sure what approach Empire will ultimately end up being.

It's not early in dev at all... in fact it was held back until Feb because they wanted to give some breathing room between Ep. 3 and Battlefront 2...

Anyway, the demo is available for download now and it ROCKS! I usually get bored with RTS' fairly quickly, but this one is pretty damn cool.

You get isometric space battles and relatively easy-to-manage ground battles, bounty hunters, spy droids, probe droids, call in TIE Bomber runs on the planet's surface...plus you get to blow up Jawa Sand Crawlers (among other things)! It doesn't get much better than that.

I'm looking forward to this - I was always pissed Force Commander wasn't any good.

As someone who loves RTS, and enjoyed Rebellion, I have high hopes.

The download links at the site, mostly led to subscription sites, with crippled free download links. Bit torrent is blocked by my school, any suggestions where to dl the demo?

I got it from here:

http://files.filefront.com/Star+Wars.../fileinfo.html

Did not require registration, and it was also fast.

Force Commander had the most absurd learning curve for any RTS.

With another SW RTS coming out, it made me think of the Dune RTS. Wonder why they never made another one of those past Dune 2000.

Sorry, OT. This game actually looks really cool. There are a bunch of games coming out for PC soon that make me really wish I had a PC to play them on.

I downloaded the 750MB demo last night. I browsed a couple of the tutorial demos and so far it looks very good. Too bad there is no console version of this, perhaps such a game requires more buttons and mouse clicks than a simple console controller can offer

I have the game on my desk, installed, but haven't played yet. I will be playing fairly heavily over the next two weeks though.

I finally installed it Sunday. Only played skirmish mode, but been pretty cool. The battle cam is awesome. Love to turn it on when I begin my attack of the starbase.

Downloading now (stuck at home dealing with plumbing issues). 750MB direct download at 250+ KB/sec? I can handle that.

501st Represent!

I've only played the tutorials so far but I like it quite a bit so far (this coming from someone who doesn't usually like RTS games). I find this one more fun than Battle for Middle-Earth (haven't played the second one yet, though).

Would you recommend this to a first-time RTS player? I've never played a game of this genre before, but I'm really interested in picking this one up eventually.

I went through the tutorials. It hasn't hooked me yet (outside of the SW aspect), but then I've never been an RTS man. I will try the skirmish mode and give it a couple more hours.

I started the campaign portion of the game last night as the Empire. I planned on playing 30-45 minutes just to see what it's like and I ended up playing for 4 1/2 HOURS! Damn addictive. At 2:00am this morning, I was actually thinking "Hmm, I could stay up another four hours and just go to bed early tomorrow night". I haven't done that in ages (for a video game, anyways )

I'm new to RTS games, never really caught my interest until now. I'm still of the mind to just build a big army and send everybody out to attack rather than using individual units to do different jobs. But I'm learning. Hell, I can't wait until the kids go to bed tonight so I can invade Mon Calamari with my big-ass fleet that I built last night. Dear God, I'm reverting back to my geek phase.

tell me about it.... i attacked Endor in galatic conquest.... the empire took over my area..... so what do i do?

A MONSTER SPACE BATTLE. 20 Y Bombers, 20 X Wings, Milliniuem Falcon, Lukes Red Squad, Captain Antillies, 10 B Frigates, 20 A Wings, and 10 Gun ships..... in the end, the falcon and Luke were left, and 5 x wings were left......

I cant believe how good this game is

I was about to quit last night but then I defeated Geonosis and gained a tech upgrade. This allowed me to make all new ground and space units so I was up another hour or so building Victory Class destroyers and such. One of my favorite battles so far was a Rebel raid on one of my planets that was guarded by a lone level-2 spacestation and a couple of minor reinforcements. That battle took me 25 minutes to play through but I eventually won.

So far, I think I enjoy the space battles moreso than the ground but I definitely have fun with both.
