Mercenaries - do you like to blow things up?
Then get this game!
It's like GTA in war-torn North Korea and you basically take missions to blow shit up. It looks great and plays great.
Get it. Now.
(I just picked up the XBox version and it rules absolutely - there's also a PS2 version...)

i read the review on IGN last night...they gave it a 9.1 I think. Sounds interesting...but I am backlogged on games as it is. Too many games too little time.

Anybody else pick this up? I'm wondering how long of a game it is. Since it doesn't have online, I'd hate for it to be really short. Nothing worse than paying $50 for 5 hours of gameplay. So far, the reviews are good, but I wanna hear from my fellow forumers before I lay down the money.

I have to admit that I often don't fall for the stereotypical products aimed for "guys" (I've never even eaten at Hooters), but this game is AWESOME. I picked it up for the PS2 and can't get enough of it. It seems like it will last for a while (20+ hrs), even if you just want to only play the missions and only do it with one of the characters. Granted, that's just a guess since I'm not very far into it but the reviews seem to support it. But at the same time, it is so much fun to grab vehicles (especially helicopters) or call in airstrikes and just wreck havoc. It's a shame there isn't a way to make it at least two player just so that you could have minigames of destroying each other's city or something.
The explosions are the best I've ever seen in a videogame. I was aiming an RPG at a truck that was carrying troops who were attacking and I shot just above them and hit a building. You could see the building begin to shimmy and, before I could say "oops", the whole thing has collapsed and the truck is hidden inside a dust cloud.
Very cool game.

Yes, the reviews all agree on the game being 20+ hours, 30 hours to do everything - and then you got the different characters to play as if you're still not sick of it.

I'm on the last mission of the first suit after about 4 hours, so I'm guessing maybe 30 hours to do and find everything. One thing I noticed is that once you complete the Ace mission for a suit, you cannot go back and do the lower cards in that suit, so make sure you finish those before going after the Ace if you are trying to complete as much as possible.
So far I'm loving this game, highly recommended.

Thanks for the heads up. I found the same is true regarding secondary objectives within a mission need to be done first to get credit for it.

I just picked up my copy about 30 minutes ago, but I haven't played it yet.
I was surprised by all the good reviews - it just seemed that a game like this that was actually of a high quality was just too good to be true. I'm happy to apparently be proven wrong.
So, after the DayQuil kicks in and the pizza gets here, I'll pop this sucker in and blow some shit up. I'm very much looking forward to it.

I just learned about some of the hidden playable characters in this game.
Among a host of others they include:
for the Xbox version
and
for the PS2 version
You can either unlock these characters on your own, or put in some sort of cheat code on the PDA.

I might have to pick this one up as well. Sounds pretty fun.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I love the couple of commercials that are playing on tv now...something like "Do you like to blow things up?, and then blow them up some more and when that is done, blow the crap out of it again and then blow it up till you puke and all that". So funny and well done.
