I got a spam message earlier today with a subject line of "Boron cowpunch."

Boron cowpunch? For some inexplicable reason, this fascinates me. It's actually got a nifty ring to it - like, it would make a good name for a rock band. "Tonight at the Odeon we have They Might Be Giants, with special guest Cheese Whiz Troopers, and local-band openers Boron Cowpunch!"

I still deleted it unread, of course.

Just a little bit of info on our misunderstood friend, Boron:

Atomic Number: 5
Atomic Radius: 83 pm
Atomic Symbol: B
Melting Point: 2075 şC
Atomic Weight: 10.81
Boiling Point: 4000 şC
Electron Configuration: [He]2s22p1
Oxidation States: 3

History
(Ar. Buraq, Pers. Burah) Boron compounds have been known for thousands of years, but the element was not discovered until 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy and by Gay-Lussac and Thenard.

Sources
The element is not found free in nature, but occurs as orthoboric acid usually found in certain volcanic spring waters and as borates in boron and colemantie. Ulexite, another boron mineral, is interesting as it is nature's own version of "fiber optics."

Important sources of boron are ore rasorite (kernite) and tincal (borax ore). Both of these ores are found in the Mojave Desert. Tincal is the most important source of boron from the Mojave. Extensive borax deposits are also found in Turkey.

Boron exists naturally as 19.78% 10B isotope and 80.22% 11B isotope. High-purity crystalline boron may be prepared by the vapor phase reduction of boron trichloride or tribromide with hydrogen on electrically heated filaments. The impure or amorphous, boron, a brownish-black powder, can be obtained by heating the trioxide with magnesium powder.

Boron of 99.9999% purity has been produced and is available commercially. Elemental boron has an energy band gap of 1.50 to 1.56 eV, which is higher than that of either silicon or germanium.

Properties
Optical characteristics include transmitting portions of the infrared. Boron is a poor conductor of electricity at room temperature but a good conductor at high temperature.

Uses
Amorphous boron is used in pyrotechnic flares to provide a distinctive green color, and in rockets as an igniter.

By far the most commercially important boron compound in terms of dollar sales is Na2B4O7.5H2O. This pentahydrate is used in very large quantities in the manufacture of insulation fiberglass and sodium perborate bleach.

Boric acid is also an important boron compound with major markets in textile products. Use of borax as a mild antiseptic is minor in economical terms. Boron compounds are also extensively used in the manufacture of borosilicate glasses. Other boron compounds show promise in treating arthritis.

The isotope boron-10 is used as a control for nuclear reactors, as a shield for nuclear radiation, and in instruments used for detecting neutrons. Boron nitride has remarkable properties and can be used to make a material as hard as diamond. The nitride also behaves like an electrical insulator but conducts heat like a metal.

Boron also has lubricating properties similar to graphite. The hydrides are easily oxidized with considerable energy liberation, and have been studied for use as rocket fuels. Demand is increasing for boron filaments, a high-strength, lightweight material chiefly employed for advanced aerospace structures.

Boron is similar to carbon in that it has a capacity to form stable covalently bonded molecular networks. Carbonates, metalloboranes, phosphacarboranes, and other families comprise thousands of compounds.

Costs
Crystalline boron (99%) costs about $5/g. Amorphous boron costs about $2/g.

Handling
Elemental boron and the borates are not considered to be toxic, and they do not require special care in handling. However, some of the more exotic boron hydrogen compounds are definitely toxic and do require care.Three oxidation states. Three!!!

Need help let me know. I can always trace the graphic you made in Illustrator so you have it vector based.

Side note: If anybody else wants to make some graphics, I'll throw them in there too. They recommend at least 300 DPI, so for the vector version I created, I sized to 3300x1200 or something really close to that before I uploaded it. So make any images at least 300 DPI or so. PNG format files would be best.

It looks good, but it's "Cowpunch", not "Punchcow". ;)

A for Ability, B for Brains, B for Effort. Happy now? :D

But anyway, CafePress doesn't like use of potentially copyrighted images, which a modified version of the Hawaiian Punch box probably would be.

Hawaiian Punch and Laughing Cow. I know it looks like it says PunchCow-, but it was because I was too lazy to format the Boron and the Cow separately. What I should've and would've done was erase and replace the Punch part as well... this was a quick scratch-up, but since nobody gave a crap I didn't bother fixing it. :) Thanks though for the pity praise. ;)

Done, but the Ash Gray shirts are more expensive. The white t-shirt is the one listed as the "Value T-Shirt" and is on some kinda of special. The Ash Grey ones are not.

I say this just so you don't think I'm trying to rip you off here... The markup I add is always $1 over their "base price", across the board. :)

I'm so glad I clicked on this thread... haha

but has anyone yet figured out what the hell it means??

i think I might have solved "Boron Cowpunch"...but I don't know if spammers are this sophisticated...

if you google "boron cowpunch" you get a dvdtalk thread where sfsdfd has "FS/FT: MINT OOP Boron Cowpunch CD NORSV" as his sig. if spammers were smart they would send you email with that thread topic to get your attention....or some poor soul was trying to buy the cd from you....whatever that was.

Hmm... Few options here:
1) I can start a third store in order to have access to add the cheap t-shirt again. This is actually really easy to do, so if you want it, don't hesitate to ask. Basically it breaks down to I can't duplicate an item in the same store. I would be able to redesign one of the existing T-shirts, except that both of them have already been ordered as is by others and I don't want to change their designs after they are ordered. But making a new store with a new design is cake.

2) You can pick a different t-shirt than the cheap "value" one and I can design that sucker up for you. Maybe put a new graphic on the back if somebody can come up with something cool and really, really large. Like maybe the yellow one or the fitted shirt or something, if you want a little bit of different to it.

3) The golf shirt uses the pocket thing.

Also, did you mean the logo without the wording or with the wording?

BradJ
09-14-04, 03:11 PM
Hmm... not a big golf-shirt guy, and I don't want a whole new store opened up just for the shirt...! Shelf the idea unless there are others that speak up... I'm 50-50 on the wording.having it is cool but not having it is mysterious.....

Still a great thing, this Boron Cow Punch craze.... :)

On the back of the one without wording you should just put something to the effect of, "Don't Ask...I don't know what it means either" ;)

Or you could put the Otter Flag on the back.

The problem with the free Cafepress stores is that you can only have one design per item. If you upgraded to a premium store you can have as many as you want.

Right now I have a premium store for a site that is not even finished being built yet. I can always throw some designs in there if need be.

Otto, let me know here or send me an email.

Otto
09-14-04, 05:04 PM
fnordboy: Yeah, I know, but like I said, I can make as many free stores as I want.

If anybody wants a different style cheap t-shirt, making a third store is really, really, trivial. Seriously. Let me know what you want, and I will provide. :)

BradJ: It's really easy to make a boroncowpunch3 store if you do want that pocket thing. I mean like 5 minutes easy. No trouble.

Edit: See? Just like that: http://www.cafepress.com/boroncowpunch3 :D

I used the 2 inch high logo for the pocket area there, but that might be too big. If you think I should shrink that down, I can do it in quarter inch increments. Their pictures are very much WYSIWYG, so judging by the picture is a good call.

Yeah, I was thinking about that, but I thought it might look a bit cheesy. I'm working on a design idea, but if you have any suggestions, I'm all ears.

I was thinking a big B with the CP as a subscript, like the chemical formula idea suggested earlier. Then the wording next to it, vertically but turned sideways to face the symbol. I'll see what I can come up with when I get home. :)

I wanted to make a Boron Cowpunch band shirt as was mentioned earlier in the thread. In coming up with designs I thought it would be cool to make one in the style of an Industrial band. The result:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/fnordboy/dvdtalk/boron_cowpunch1.gif

If anyone is interested in this design, I would like to come up with a back design. Someone ealrier (Otto I think) mentioned listing Otter Farms as the tour dates, I think that would be a cool idea but I couldn't find any (but I did find this (http://acsun.frostburg.edu/events/otter/)). Maybe go with an anti vivisection of otters type message or tour name (a la Skinny Puppy) might be cool. Ideas? Thoughts? Criticisms?

I do have a high res version of this if you want to add it, Otto.

Otto
09-15-04, 01:06 AM
I'll put it up there if you or somebody else wants one. I'll put anything up there that's BCP related, if somebody asks for it. But I find it to be a bit scary. -eek-

The big chunks of black might not look so good. I dunno enough about how they make their shirts though, so maybe it'd work okay. Somebody else here probably knows more than I do on this one. I started reading about stuff like "full bleed" and my eyes started bleeding, so I'm not the best authority on this one. ;)

You can email me a high res vesion if you want, or if you have a photoshop vector version I can deal with it even better and resize as needed. I don't have Illustrator, but I do have the latest Photoshop and it can probably open Illustrator files.

Not a bad idea. I was thinking of a back with the original design (without words) and the words "2004 World Tour". Below that Otto could list a bunch of dates and places (real or fictitious). Since it's a "World Tour" we can even include locations for those Otter's who live outside the US.

Well, according to the Babelfish...

ほう素牛穿孔器

Symbol 1,2 = ほう
Meaning "one" ???

Symbol 3 = 素
Meaning "element"

Symbol 4 = 牛
Meaning "cow"
(Backed up down the page here: http://www.websters-online-dictionary.org/definition/english/co/cow.html)

Symbols 5,6,7 = 穿孔器
Meaning "punch"

I already posted that info. It's a buck markup on each sale which I'll eventually donate to DVDTalk, if and when they send it to me.

Well, that one lifted off your post is the one that's already on there. It looks okay on the hat in the picture, so it's worth a try.

Well, 4 orders moved to "completed" which I assume means they are in shipping. 2 more are marked "done" and a new 5 are marked "production". So it's getting there.

Make sure you tell us when the first *non* DVDTalk member/Otter buys one....
Some random person will be browsing Cafepress and think "Hey This looks cool!"
I like the 'Best of Both Worlds' shirt, although the other logo is pretty cool, and definitely eyecatching/eyebrow raising.
I wonder if my little boy would like the creeper...

Otto
09-17-04, 04:04 PM
dtcarson: That's a little hard to do, as I don't know everybody's real names here, but that's all I can see on cafepress.

The only name I don't recognize off the top of my head is a "Yi" from NY buying a t-shirt yesterday.

Best. Thread. Ever.
I've been giggling uncontrollably at my desk for the past 15 minutes reading through this entire thread. After this I will be ordering a BCP t-shirt.
Thank you Otters for making my Friday. :)

CafePress blocked the store because of the Angry Cow image Trigger made. They marked it as questionable and disabled, so I simply killed the image and sent them back an email saying so. So if the store doesn't work at the moment, that's why.

Your order is still there, but I removed the image and the hat product. I kinda expect them to cancel your order at this point. Who knows, maybe they'll miss it and you'll get your hat anyway. Not likely though. Sorry. :(

If you do get it, it'll be a one of a kind. ;)

I love you, Boron cowpunch.

Yes, three at the moment. Each store has links to the others at the top of the page.

And nobody's created the world tour image for the back yet. Come up with a good one. :)

If a world tour thing is done put Tiptonville, Tn on it. That'll be the biggest claim to fame this town has, aside from the biggest continental earthquake in US history in 1812.
