View Full Version : Serious Medical Question: Do your Boogers smell funny and or strange?

I've been smelling something weird for around 6 months now.

Now I don't have bad breath (so it's not that), but try as I can, I can't describe the odor, but it's weird and it's always there, in my sniffer.

I thought for a while it was the cholesterol seeping out of my chest but that was later ruled out by my Doctor as being pretty much impossible. (Thank Gawd!)

But now, I'm on the case again (because the smell is still there) and this time I'm going the nasal route and think although I blow my nose on a regular basis, I am somehow, Booger Impacted.

Is there such thing as a sinus rinse or nasal enema I could use that contains a deodorant?

Could that be the source of the smell?

What do you know about it?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks everybody!

Paul

There was a dude I knew many years ago who said he had a nightmare about how in the dream he started picking his nose but he didn't stop there and continued picking until he had removed most of his sinus including his pallet!!! http://www.officialforum.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

You could have rhinitis (inflammation in the nose), nasal polyps or sinusitis. Did you or do you smoke, and/or do have nasal allergies?

The Edit King

No smoking (for like 20 years) and no allergies.

Well, I DO have hay fever from time to time (but nothing serious, though...).

So obviously, you've asked others around you, and they can't smell what you are describing?

tek, this is a good time to start a collection. Just get a nice piece of clean white posterboard, and deposit your findings onto it. label accordingly. show to relatives. and small children.

The Edit King

FP: No.

The closest I can come to actually describing it is that it smells kinda like grease or something burned, but that's not really it.

If it smells like something burning, you should see a neurologist. You could have a brain tumor. Seriously.

I was just going to say the same thing. That's a BIG red flag. It could also be a form of sensory epilepsy called Olfactory Seizures.

This is actually not something to be taken lightly. See a doctor. now.

FP & Brizz: I'd like a third opinion so I'll ask my Doc about it, and thanks for taking time out to give me the info.

As I sit here and write this, I can smell a well seasoned steak.

On a lighter note, maybe it's a side effect to some medication I've been recently taking.

Are you taking migraine medication?

The Edit King
01-08-05, 04:30 PM
Nope. I don't have (or of late have had) any headaches.

I've been taking Norco (10/325 for like 7 months) and have recently had two epidual injections in my spine (up by my neck) for a herniated disc and pinched nerve & or nerves. The last one was just last Thursday and after I got home I noticed that the left side of my neck, shoulder and left arm looked all sunburned and was really hot to the touch.

It could be related to the epidurals....but I would bet money that it is something neurological....I don't imagine the hydrocodone would cause it.

The Edit King
01-08-05, 04:37 PM
It could be related to the epidurals....Ya think so?

GAWD, I hope that's all it is!but I would bet money that it is something neurological....How much money? -ptth-

He uses this 3 to 4 inch long needle, and it's like a he used a double-dose of the medication this last time. I could actually hear it squirting inside my head!

THEEK, Indeed! http://www.officialforum.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

FinkPish
01-08-05, 04:54 PM
It looks like one of the side effects of Norco is what is essentially an allergic reaction, which could explain the problems with your nose. But you should still see your doctor, just in case.

I can't believe I registered just so I could post about snot, but...

As someone who's has sinus problems I can recommend the NeilMed Sinus Rinse (http://www.neilmed.com/). Nasal irrigation has been clinically proven to reduce the occurance of sinus infections and the like...who knows, it might help you with unpleasant sinus smells.

Be warned that sometimes irrigating your schnozz isn't the best feeling thing in the world to do.

That's usually a sign of a gypsy curse. The way to break the curse is to smear feces under your eyes and wear a garlic necklace for 1 week.

It's funny that you brought this topic up TEK. I have been living with this sinus odor for a couple of years now and I thought it was just me. I finally went to see my doctor for this about six months ago and he diagnosed me with a sinus infection, so he prescribed me some kind of antibiotics and saline solution that I sprayed up my nose, but these did not work. So needless to say, I'm still looking for answers to my "stinky nose" problem to this day.

The Edit King

I'm sorry Buford T (and I now see I could have done a little better on the title), but I'm scared and I don't wanna die from it, so I'm asking questions. http://www.officialforum.com/images/smilies/redface.gif & http://www.officialforum.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

WOW, BOSS!!!

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't yet found a solution to your own personal stinky-stinky, but I'm encouraged and hope that's all I have.

Nasal saline irrigation is a great way to clean out the ol' snot chute. As for adding a deodorant, you could try your own special eau de toilette you've got lying around, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it.

Have you been having trouble with any other senses (taste, sight, hearing) so that your olfactory sense might be hypertrophic a la Lt. Col. Frank Slade in Scent of a Woman?

Mr. M: No other sensory problems (that I know of...).

Tek, we have confirmed that they smell bad.....

but, how do they taste ? The taste test is crucial to diagnose the problem. (and any problem really. you must taste things)

Well, being only an edit "King" (and not an edit "God" as the mods & admins), even "I" need help from time to time and although I should know better than to actually ask for help around here (from the powers that be, that is), I took a chance and you took time out to lend a hand and I honestly appreciate that, nemein.
