Kieslowski's Three Colors Trilogy - French or Polish?

Are these films considered French films or Polish films? Thanks in advance.

Depends on your point of view.

They're films, anyhow.

Your best bet is to go with European.

If you have to choose, go French.

If you are a strict auteurist, you can go Polish, but then you'd have to say Some Like It Hot was a Polish film, too.

They're from the same country as the works of Chopin.

Seriously, IMDB (I know, far from definitive) lists France, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK as countries of origin, I guess based on the production company(ies). Probably "European" as suggested.

Reminds me a bit of a story Orson Welles told (in one of his interview with Peter Bogdonavich) about Othello which he financed himself and shot in various places around the Mediterranean. When it was entered in Cannes, he had to list a country of origin. In reality, there really wasn't any single country (if any), but for whatever reason he chose Morocco (IMDB lists USA, Italy, France, and Morocco), where some of the movie was filmed. He knew the film had won the grand prize when he heard that the officials were scrambling to find the Moroccan national anthem to play when the prize was awarded.

I consider them this way:

Blue - French
White - Polish
Red - Swiss

to the best of my knowledge, marin karmitz's production company, MK2, was the principle entity that got these made, and that's a french company. so if you have to pick one, i'd go with that.

Considering Red, White, and Blue are the colors of the French flag and not the Polish flag, I'd also be inclined to go French.

I don't know about the other two, but there was definitely some confusion regarding Red. They talk about it a bit on the DVD's. I think it was with regard to submitting Red to the Academy Awards (it's been a long time since I've watched the special features so bear with me) something like even though it was a French production company and everybody working on it was French, France wouldn't submit it because they considered it Swiss, the Swiss considered it French and so on. Dig through the special features on Red for the real story.

I thought these movies were filmed to celebrate an anniversary of the French revolution. Anyone else heard that?
