It's a bit too early, but are you going to buy/collect the same movies you already own in the new formats comming out? Blue Ray, HD DVD, etc.

Probably not all the same ones but I have to say, if they're as cheap as regular DVD's are, it's very possible. When DVD's came around, I sold off all my laserdiscs and purchased the DVD versions for virtually the same amount that I sold the LD's for. If I'm able to do the same thing with HD-DVD, why the hell not? This is a hobby and it's fun. Of course, if I no longer care about the movie then it doesn't matter.

Nope. I'll like purchase a player when the price falls and only buy new stuff. As long as it's backwards compatible, I see no reason to upgrade any of my others. And if it's not, I may not buy it at all.

probably not... maybe a few action movies, just to see the difference... as jdpatri said, the players will be backwards-compatible, and I'll have a CRT based HDTV for at least a few more years , so no reason to upgrade.

If either format actually succeeds beyond a nitch market, I'll replace some titles that will really benefit from the upgrade, but mostly just new stuff I don't already own.
I used to think that until about a month ago (when I finally got HDTV). But HDTV looks so much better than my DVDs, I'm sure I'll upgrade some of them.

Yeah...that's what I have to comment on. I'd like to know the amount of people that already have an HDTV that will NOT upgrade. I got a new TV last month and the difference between HD and regular DVD is massive. I used to think it was nothing...but...that quickly changed.

It all depends on how much better are the new format. If they are significantly better than DVDs, and are cheap, then I'll probably get the newer format. If they are only slightly better or if they are expensive, then I'll only replace a few of my favorite movies.

I'm sure I'll eventually re-buy every movie I have (around 180 or so). I just got HDTV and it just blows away DVD so much that it would be so hard not to re-buy.
Of course, this is probably at least a few years down the road. I will wait for Blu Ray to hopefully win and wait for the costs of a good player to drop to $300-400 - as well as fixing the inevitable bugs, authoring and mastering, etc.

Hell yeah. Every time I see yet another film in my collection broadcast in HD I know it's tantamount to saying goodbye to that disc, as though it had been rendered obsolete. It's just not as much fun to watch a lesser format once you've seen how good it can look on a better one.
But I've never been one to buy everything that comes down the pike. Only my absolute favoritist movies of all time. And it appears that I have, oh, about 400 absolute favoritist movies of all time...

Like everyone else has said, it's really way too early to determine just what we plan to re-buy once the new format drops. However, I can definately say that there is no way I am re-buying the 1,500+ discs I have in my current collection. There are certain discs that I'm sure I'll upgrade-Jurassic Park, Apollo 13, All the Star Trek films just to name a few. But, until then, like everyone else, I just wait and see.

Mostly just new stuff, and only upgrading "killer apps" Star Wars, etc.

For the most part no. I'm not a videophile and I'm in no hurry to get an HDTV or for the new formats to come out.
Eventually I'll get an HDTV and whatever new DVD format player (once I see that it's going to stick around and get every major release just like DVD now). Then I'll buy new releases in that format, and just upgrade a few of my favorites like Star Wars, LOTR, etc.

I'd not even replace 2% of my collection. Maybe the Matrix Triliogy, and Indiana Jones, that's about all I can think of. I'm not even sure this HD-DVD/Blu-Ray thing is going to be a sure hit. People are just now getting dvd players for the first time as it is (crazy isn't it). Plus HD is just taking off as it is, and not a lot of people even own an HD-TV. For some reason I think these HD dvd players are going to be a huge bust, but that's just my opinion.

I dont see how hd-dvd or blue ray is gong to compete if they are not as cheap as DVDs. I may be wrong here but i think most people just started collecting DVDs because vhs is big and clumsy and also bcause they deteriorate over time. I know this is the reason why i started collecting DVDs and i dont see how blue ray and hd-dvd is going to do well when DVDs will be a cheaper than those formats.
