I was wondering if anyone could find a video of Joe Theismann's sick broken leg. I've heard its legendary, and surpasses the grossness of Willis McGahee's backwards knee. If no one knows of a video is there at least a picture or a screen shot of it.

The one football injury i remember that is WAY worse than Joe Theismans (and is still the worst i've ever seen) is a running back from Oakland named Napoleon McCallum ( I think, trust me, its been a very long time). I think i twas him. He got hit and his entire knee bent back like it normally bends that way. The guy never played again.
THe fullback from SF, don't remember his name, but his nickname was Bar None, was one of the worst also, but Theismans is 2nd behind the raiders guy.
(god i hope he played for the raiders. I wish i could think of his name. i think it was Napoleon McCallum, but i'm probably wrong).
Yup, it is McCallum. read this....
Anyone who watched the Monday Night Football season opener on Sept. 5, 1994 between the Los Angeles Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park remembers. 49ers linebacker Ken Norton Jr. tackled McCallum and in the pileup McCallum dislocated his knee, tearing three ligaments, ripping his calf and hamstring muscles from the bone, and incurring nerve and artery damage.

Yeah, I remember watching that McCallum injury when it happened. It was pretty horrific. And Ken Norton was stuck underneath him to. Took a while before they moved Norton out to attend to McCallum. It was just crazy the way the leg bent. I've never seen anything like it, and I've seen some crazy sports injuries.

I think you're talking about William Floyd. Between he and McCallum I guess it's not good being a Bay Area running back. But then again the Raiders weren't in Oakland back then.

what about ex-Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Jason Kendall's gruesome injury 4 years ago? i remember seeing a picture of him in Maxim magazine (can't remember the exact issue; it's probably the early ones with Pamela Anderson on the cover), with him grimacing in pain because the bone was sticking out from his ankle.

I don't know why but I'm a little bit sick when it comes to gruesome injuries. I remember when the Jason Kendall thing happened, I just kept rewinding and watching it over and over until it wasn't gruesome anymore.
That said, I don't think I've ever seen the Theisman injury, and I live in DC.

My top 3 most grusome sports injuries:
1. Napoleon McCallum - we see guys hyperextend their knees all the time, but this one went in the complete opposite direction of the joint as opposed to kind of sideways like McGahee et al.
2. Joe Theisman - Clean compound fracture, L.T. actually threw up upon seeing the bone jutting out.
3. Alexander Mogilny - ankle turned 270 degrees, but his reaction is what makes it the most grusome.

Another more obscure injury comes from MMA...Renzo Gracie getting his elbow dislocated via a spinning kimura from Sakuraba...not pretty...especially when he pop it back in...

Mariner Moose, of pro baseball’s Seattle Mariners, once crashed into the centerfield wall while being towed on in-line skates. He suffered a dislocated knee and ankle, a fractured ankle and the humiliation of seeing his accident replayed on dozens of sports shows.
I found it funny b/c the guy still had his moose mask on and it had a big smile on it.

If I remember right McCallum did make a 'comeback' from the injury in the XFL and spring practice with a couple of NFL teams. He never did play another snap in a regular season game though.

Darryl Stingley, WR for the Patriots, 1978 game vs Raiders. Back then, the Raiders took a lot of cheap shots. The play was blown dead, Stingley relaxed, and Jack Tatum hit him hard. Stingley was paralyzed from the neck down.
They played that clip a lot on the Boston stations. For many years after that, any Pats-Raider game had hundreds of yards of penalties.

The one I have a hard time watching is Dave Dravecky's pitch where his arm snaps. Can you imagine throwing so hard that your arm snaps? Granted it was eaten away by cancer and eventually amputated but still...
a cancerous tumor was found in Dravecky's pitching arm. He underwent surgery on October 7, 1988, removing half of the deltoid muscle in his pitching arm and freezing the humerus bone in an effort to eliminate all of the cancerous cells. By July 1989, he was pitching in the minors, and on August 10, he made a highly publicized return to the major leagues, pitching 8 innings and defeating Cincinnati 4-3. In his following start five days later against the Expos, Dravecky pitched three no-hit innings, but in the fifth inning, he felt a tingling sensation in his arm. In the sixth inning, he gave up a home run to the leadoff batter, hit the second batter, and in his first pitch to Tim Raines, his humerus bone snapped, ending his season.
