So far it looks like the refurbs from www.heartlandamerica.com are the cheapest. The DC07 is $250 and the Animal is $299.
Anyone know of something cheaper?

I bought one from Sears and love it. If you can get the right salesperson you might get something off their sales price but keep in mind these are one of those things they prefer not to discount. They will pm if you can find anyone they can match. They do have demos once in a while and those are very much discounted. Still get the standard warranty from the date of purchase.

I got a new one off ebay, missed out on the deals of the summer where Amazon had some in the gold box and such. I ended up getting the new DC14 for $300 shipped and I love it. I had a Hoover Windtunnerl and a Bissell Bagless w/Hepa and both of them were always clogging and losing suction. When I got the Dyson I did my house with the windtunnel then redid it with the dyson and had to empty the dyson 4x(house is about 1500sq ft). A big reason for the "need" for the dyson is I have a Malamute and American Eskimo so lots of hair around all the time.

I ended up getting the refurb animal, and when we use it on the one room with berber, it took a lot of strands out and wound around the brush thingy. It may be too powerful for berber. On everything else, however, this is one incredible machine.
DC07 refurb is $249 plus shipping. pretty good price. The animal is $50 more and in stock. I sure wouldn't hesitate getting the refurb. No idea what was wrong with ours, but it appears just like new.

You're probably confused because some (not all) of the other posters have misspelled it. It is 'Berber' carpet. I found this link here:
I purchased the Dyson a few months back and my wife thought I was crazy. Now she is so happy that I purchased it with the baby on the way. I paid 269.99 shipped a while back. Do a search for my post and you will find out who I went through. My came with an additional one year warranty. FYI..there is no differenct between the yellow, red, green, and purple ones. The only difference is the attachments. So, if you are not going to use the attachments (I don't miss them) go with the yellow.

The DC14 is a newer model with minor differences. I was told the suction power is the same. One difference is the profile ... the DC07 tank is tall and skinny, while the DC14 tank is short and fat (which could influence storage decisions for some). The handle is still the same height.
Speaking of the handle, one of the biggest differences is the way the hose is pulled out of the handle. The DC14 is easier, but it's kind of hard to explain. There should be a demo on the Dyson website.
I believe the DC14 models will set you back about $50 more. I bought the red DC14 several months ago from Best Buy.

I can't really decide 'tween the red or purple. I was thinking the Animal had the rotating brush thing, which would be good for stairs.
Maybe the 14 is the way to go, on the Dyson site it mentions brush bar control, so you can turn off the beater brush. This would be good if we ger berber carpet (which the wife likes)

We purchased "The Animal" through Heartland America just three weeks ago. We had just vacuumed the carpet when it arrived so we were able to do a shock test. It was amazing! We do not have pets, but the Animal came with so many extra parts and Zorba cleaning solution which made the extra $50 worth it. It arrived within 7 days via FedEx. We couldn't be happier with it.

After doing some extensive research into the Dyson vaccuum cleaners, my wife and I decided on the DC14 Animal. There are three major differences between the 07 and 14 models. The first is the way the handle comes out. In the 07 you have to flip it around and whatnot. The 14 does not need this. Second, the power consumption on the 14 is slightly *lower* than the 07. To keep suction power up, they made the inside diameter of the hose slightly smaller (increasing pressure). Third, the dirt fills in the canister in such a way that it doesn't cover up the dirt entry point (the 07 is set up 'in reverse' of the 14).
My wife and I just bought a new house (new carpet) and used the 14 Animal on the upstairs (3 rooms and a hallway). Amazing what comes out of brand new carpet....
I picked up so much, I emptied the thing after doing just the upstairs.
Incidentally, Bed Bath and Beyond will not only give you 20% off, but if you can find a store that carries the 14 for a lower price, they'll give you 20% off the *matched price*.
Here's what they don't tell you: There are 2 models of the 14 Animal: DL and SL... I couldn't find a reference to this on the Dyson website, but the guy at BBB tells me that Dyson told them that the difference between the two is the amount of attachments boxed up.
jonw9
03-04-05, 11:05 AM
What is the difference between the SL and DL then? How do tell which model you are looking at?
jgottlieb
03-04-05, 03:32 PM
The full model number is on the box. I'm not sure what the different "package" contents comprise of....
And there's a posibility that this was a Steaming Pile given to me by the BBB person so he wouldn't have to price match ($150 difference at Target).
schmedy
03-04-05, 03:42 PM
On the 14's there are models only sold at certian merchants, I think there is a BB model and Sears only model...think I read this somewhere. There is nothing different, just a different color. And the differance between the Animal and Full Gear was the length of warranty.
YoJimbo
03-04-05, 09:03 PM
The DC14's vacuums ARE ALL THE SAME.
The only difference between the models is the extras (the attachments, a longer warranty, an extra filter, cleaning powder, etc.).
If you are thinking about buying a Dyson vacuum, go to Dyson's web site and decide what attachments you need, and then you'll know which model to get. I was perfectly content with the "low reach" red model (which is the least expensive DC014 version).
More attachments (or fancier attachments) = more money.

I was able to get a Dyson Animal DC14 from our local Linens & Things using a 20% off coupon combined with giftcards that were -20% (see giftcard threads here and on fatwallet). Our LNT didn't care that Dyson is "excluded" on the coupons and they were very helpful in actually ordering a DC14 since they did not have one in stock. In addition, they consolidated our 20 x $25 giftcards into a single card so they could use it on their in-store order system that only allows one gift card per purchase.
If you have a LNT or BBB nearby see if they will work the same deal for you. I suspect YMMV.

Just realize that for each Dyson, there are 2 models, the 7 and the 14....whether you are getting the cyclone or the animal. The ones they sell on heartland seem to be the 7's from what I can tell. Don't get me wrong, it seems to be a great price, but realize you are probably getting the cheaper version.

Got a question for those who own this thing. How fast do you sweep the area you are vaccuming? Mine (brand new) picks up a lot of fiber and dust, but sometimes it won't pick up small debris. Maybe I go too fast or need time to break in?

We tried a Dyson... Purchased it from Best Buy. Got it home, and did the test, vacuming with our old vaccume first... We were NOT impressed with the Dyson at all... I thought I must have it put together wrong or something. It just did not pick up much more than our old Miele.
I went back to Best Buy and purchased a Hoover Windtunnel Cannister... Did the test, and after using both the Miele AND the Dyson, the Hoover pulled up dirt that must have been in the downstairs basement... It was just amazing...
Maybe we had a defective Dyson?
Anyone do a side by side at home comparison of the Dyson and the Hoover Cannister?
I like the way you don't have to clean the Dyson's filter, but that is only a minor problem with the Hoover...

Well, I bought a Dyson yellow (basic model) because of all the glowing reviews. My primary purpose for it is to pick up dog hair and although the machine was easy to use and picked up alot of stuff from the carpet, it left many dog hairs behind. So useless for my needs. For that kind of money, it should do a better job. People are still sold on the marketing though and the idea that spending tons gets you a better machine.

I think you nailed it Big...
I now remember that the brush on the Dyson barely touched the carpet and left alot of (cat) hair there...
The Hoover's brushes, when on, actually pull the head along the carpet. Coupled with the VERY STRONG suction, the Hoover was able to pull MUCH more out of the carpet than the Dyson.
I admit a MINOR incovienence in having to clean the filter on the Hoover every once in a while, (HINT: use a dust-buster on it!), but cosidering how well it vaccumes, and how light and easy it is to maneuver... I am quite happy with the Hoover.

Man, I hate hearing those negative reviews. The main thing I liked about the Dyson was not having to clean the filter. I have a bagless older hoover now. It does a great job, but I'm allergic to dust so it kills me when I have to clean it. I usually just do it once a month or so, and just take it out to the dumpster and bang the filter on the inside of it until all the dust is out, and try to stand so it's not blowing back on me.

My wife is the same way. The dyson is actually really good for this. The canister comes off, you hit a release trigger on top, and the bottom flaps open. It really keeps dust to a minimum.
I am surprised by the negative reviews as well. We've used ours for months now, and the thing is amazing. We had a very good Hoover before, and used it for the test. Went over everything with the Hoover, then again with the dyson, and it was amazing what the hoover didn't pick up.

I recently picked up the Dyson DC14 (for cat hair). Wow what a difference this thing made after using it for the first time. One room filled the whole canister and I was shocked how much was in the carpet. The best news of this story is my wife had a 20% off coupon for Linens n Things and we got to use it on the Dyson DC14 (purple model). Then the lady at the cash register asked if we had a Linens n Things credit card. My wife said no we don't what's so good about it? The lady at the cash register said we could save another 10% off bringing our total to 30% off of a $499.99 item. So, we got out of the store with the Dyson DC14 for $393.81 total. They did not offer a extended warrenty but, we have 60 days if anything goes wrong and 2 years with Dyson. I am very pleased with our purchase. I hope this helps others.

In January, I went to a vacuum store in the area. I got a nice demonstration on Dyson as well as other vacuums like Simplicity and Royal. The salesman was very knowledgable and gave a great demonstration that took 30 minutes. The Dyson really doesn't have great suction power across the full length of the beater brush. It also doesn't agitate the dirt out of the carpet very well. I ended up buying a Royal vacuum that is made of stainless steel for the same price as the Dyson. It agitates the carpet and has incredible suction all across the brush. It picked up stuff the Dyson or Simplicity couldn't touch. It's also extremely easy to take apart if needed.

What the hell? -smile- There was a post there that I was responding to. He must've deleted it. Oh well, I can see why the Dyson scored low. It's pretty cheaply constructed. Check out the Royal vacs if you go searching. They mostly have bag vacs but they still do a better job of cleaning than Dysons. Go stick a nickel in front of a Dyson vacuum and it barely moves because it's not agitating the carpet. Stick one in front of the Royal vacuums. The thing will spin and vibrate b/c the Royal is essentially shaking the dirt out of your carpet.

Price difference +/-?
Price is about the same. I got my Royal for the same price as a Dyson.

Is there a specific model # or line that I should look for on Royal vacs?
thanks

Just look at the Royal uprights. They look like the ones used commerically by maids and such.

Royal = Dirt Devil
...or at least Dirt Devil is made by Royal.

Good looking vacuum, if there is such a thing, but it doesn't change the fact that Royal Appliance of Glenwillow, Ohio makes Dirt Devil products.

Home Depot have these on clearance at the moment, 30% off. My local HD (95th and Pulaski in Chicago) had about 9 of the DC07 reduced from $399 to $279.
This thread has been around for the longest time, so I thought I'd update for anyone who is *still* waiting for that killer deal!
My parents live in the area... that's the Home Depot I go to whenever I need to help them fix something in their house. I like the new target there.
Anyway, I was about to post about today's woot but shaun3000 already did.

After going through several vacuums, we finally bought a Dyson. It's a great vacuum. Cleans carpet well (we have dogs), upholstery well, hardwood well, and it's solid a rock (heavy as one too). Had it for about two years now (DC-14). It's the best vacuum I've ever had, bar none.
Got a great deal using a combination of my Kohl's card at the 30% off coupon from Fatwallet. It was under $200, brand new shipped, after all the discounts.

I originally purhased the animal (the purple one) from Amazon for $375 or so back in December '03. We've never had an issue with it and it still going strong.

well, wife is not happy that i paid $1600 for a vac even though she doesn't use it... so, to make her happy, i returned it and get a cheaper one. From Consumer Reports and various posts on Amazon, the Eureka is very good. Also, i have used the Eureka, for $140, man, that thing is a great buy! Really sucks (suction)

Bought the DC17 a few months back and I absolutely love it. I've never owned/used a better vacuum. I only saved 10% at Best Buy (plus the $30 in Reward Zone coupons), but I know to look better for the next time (which hopefully won't be anytime in the foreseeable future).

I have had my Dyson for 2 years and just love it. It is by far the best vacuum I have ever owned. I paid $269.00 on Ebay for mine.
