I saw Kung Fu Hustle and A World Without Thieves back-to-back, and I prefer the latter.

"Kung Fu Hustle" hits record first day high

www.chinaview.cn 2004-12-24 16:53:21

BEIJING, Dec. 24 -- This year's eagerly anticipated Chinese film "Kung Fu Hustle" took in 4 million yuan, or over 480 thousand US dollars at the box office after its Friday premiere.

The film has already far exceeded another New Year's blockbuster "A World without Thieves", topping the Chinese box office during the Christmas rush.

"Kung Fu Hustle", starring Hong Kong veteran comedian Stephen Chow, broke the first-day box office record set in 1997.

Tickets for the first day were almost sold out in all the cinemas around the country, and 70 per cent of the audience was satisfied with the hit, including renowned directors Feng Xiaogang, Lu Chuan and Li Shaohong.

Sounds like a must-see to me!

They already announced a sequel to this one. What happened to the sequel to Shaolin Soccer? And what's the deal with him taking 2 years off? And why did he and Ng Man Tat have a falling out? I know it was over Chow not giving him a part in this film, but really - why did he poo-poo Ng Man Tat?

Ng Man Tat got married and he wanted to take some time off screen. He did so Stephen Chow got some other people to work with him.Ng Man Tat does not work that much these days because of his marriage.

I never knew there was a sequel to Shaolin Soccer. But maybe in 2 more years you might see it during the World Cup

There isn't a sequel to Shaolin Soccer, it was just a rumor, or possibility, before Chow started work on Kung Fu Hustle. Another rumor was a possible sequel to God of Cookery.

Also, Chow didn't go on vacation for 2 years. He's been working on this film since near after Shaolin Soccer. It's just that he's working as writer, producer, director, and actor now. It's not like in the old days when he just acted and hopped onto a production with an existing script and everything.

And I doubt Chow and Ng had a falling out. Ng Man Tat hasn't appeared in every Chow film. Off the top of my head, he's absent from boththe Royal Tramp films as well as Out of the Dark. The only falling out during Kung Fu Hustle was when Sammo Hung walked out.

Ng Man Tat was in Royal Tramp. he was a eunuch.
I've read in the papers that Ng Man-Tat visited the set of Kung Fu Hustle and was supposed to make an appearance but then, Stephen Chow cancelled his appearance. He was somewhat annoyed about it but it looks like he's trying not to make a big fuss over it.

OK, I was wrong about Royal Tramp, although his role in those films is smaller than usual, I think he only appears in part 1.

I know for sure he doesn't appear in Forbidden City Cop, or From Bejing With Love. He's also not in Flirtong Scholar.

I loved this movie, I was about to describe what it was a more simplified version of but then realized it would ruin it for some so I stopped myself but I can say it is one of the best martial arts inspired movies in ages. To me, this, WAY more than Kill Bill whatever volume (movies which I loved) feels like it shows the love and passion of those old Shaw Bros and fantasy films, it isnt just pretty faces doing the fighting but just regular looking people, in all the roles. It does sacrifice alot of the humor from previous Chow films for action, which was weird at first but this movie does have a bunch of laugh out loud moments but by the end is just a kick ass fighting movie and Chow does impress, Im only afraid that IF this ever gets a decent release here people will think he's just another Li or Chan he looks so good. Definitely near or at the top of movies released this year for me.

That's quite soon after the theatrical opening, but no complaints!

The mainland disc of A WORLD WITHOUT THIEVES is out already, see sensasian.com. The 2 disc HK version is up for preorder at yesasia, sensasian, probably elsewhere, for a 1/25 release.
