Better trilogy: Star Wars or The Lord of the Rings?

Now that the true version of the final LOTR film has been released, we can determine which series in the end truly comes out on top. So which do you think is the better film trilogy?

LOTR is great, but this is really no contest. Star Wars all the way.

I'm just the opposite. "Star Wars" had groundbreaking effects, but the story was thin and the dialogue was weak. Just badly written. "Empire" was great and a true classic. "Return" was a major letdown.

LOTR was solid all the way through and had a much more meaningful and consistent story than the "Star Wars" trilogy had. Better acting too.

How do you compare a series of movies shot 3 years apart to a movie shot back to back to back to equal 3 movies?

Lord of the Rings all the way.

The Star wars Trilogy is/was great, but everytime I see it I feel like Lucas fell short in terms of the overall tone and dialog. Granted, Jackson had Tolkien to pull from so that put him ahead of the game.

Hasn't this been done to death? And I really don't care if the "true" version is out. You have to consider that the theater editions are the "true" versions since Peter Jackson has stated that the EE's are just extra's for those fans and that they are not the definitive versions of the films.

Star Wars.

Personally I voted for LotR. Maybe once the entire SW story is finished I'll change my mind (granted it won't be a "trilogy" then ) but while the stories are very similar on a basic level I think it is better told in the LotR (of course the source material was better to begin w/ ).

I'm almost positive we've seen this poll before. I'll say again what I said back then to those voting for LOTR - you've got to put some distance between the releases and picking a trilogy. In other words, ten years from now what will be remembered more fondly? I think it will be the Star Wars Trilogy. Of course 10 years from now, you'll still be able to see the LOTR movies as they appeared in the theaters...no telling what Star Wars will look like in 10 years.

Sorry, but that is impossible to decide. "I like them both equally".

Having seen both trilogies during first release in the theater I have to vote for LOTR. No movie ever affected me like Star Wars, but then I was 10 at the time. Re-watching the entire trilogy on DVD has pulled the rose colored glasses off. Acting, script, story, directing, cinematography... in all aspects I think LOTR is superior.
Sorry, guys.

It's kind of hard to compare the writing of the two, as one was an original screenplay by a young director, and the other was written by an Oxford professor and language historian over the course of many years. If they hadn't followed the original text as much as they did, the LOTR movies could have easily been as "thin" and "weak" as the Star Wars movies.

Being a life-long Star Wars geek (I was 5 when it came out), it took a while but I finally had to acknowledge that LOTR packed more visceral punch & power. In considering my choice for this poll, I weighed the fact that George Lucas did write Star Wars and Peter Jackson had Tolkien do the hardest work for him. However, Lucas didn't really make up the underlying story. He had historical epics & Joseph Campbell to draw from.

This will be a topic much like the Star Trek vs. Star Wars arguments, which are meaningless.

In the end, I will watch LOTR as many times as I have SW.

Star Wars(the original versions), hands down.

If for no other reason then the 1-2-3 villainous punch of Grand Moff Tarkin, Darth Vader, and Emperor Palpatine. Who the hell does LOTR have? Saruman(who was cut from the third film), a really big Ork, the Witch King, and a fiery eye in a tower. Please.

Here's my dilemma. I don't consider LOTR to be a trilogy. It's one, well done, long ass movie with 2 intermissions.

In terms of movies, Star Wars. In terms of DVD releases, LOTR's all the way.
