Please help...what movie am I thinking of?

A long time ago (most likely early 80's) I think I saw a movie on HBO. The only scene I can recall somewhat is that a troubled teen boy, I think dark hair, he is very mixed up and angry about something. Well, he goes and steals a car (though I think it might be a Bronco or something). When stealing, he literally steals it from inside the dealership and drives right through the front window.

A little later, the cops catch up to him, get him out of the car and I think beating him. A cop's gun accidentally goes off and shoots him in the head and he's dead. The cops are stunned and shocked. The movie progresses from there.

I want to say the title or this character is named Michael or Daniel, but not sure. I have been thinking of this movie scene for awhile because I remember that gunshot scene disturbing me way back then.

Anyone ease my pain?

wouldn't be "Mike's Murder", would it? Do you recall Debra Winger in it?
