OK, from what I read the deal is you buy at least one per month.
You build a music Que and they ship you a CD each month and charge you 5.99. If there is nothing in your Que you get charged anyway (be careful)
You can also buy anytime you want once you are a member.
As for legit, it seems to be a part of BMG just like DV2 is a new part of columbia house.
What do you guys think. I am on the verge of signing up.

Why is this better than BMG?
potnoodlez
12-22-04, 06:40 PM
It's not that good of a deal. I did a search and it appears as if their catalogue is indenticle to BMG's. I would rather stick with BMG and get more cds for the least amount of money as possible.
Also, not all cd's are $5.99. Multi-disc sets are more money.
Actually, after further inspection I think I may sign up for this. The Pantera and STP CD/DVD sets are only $5.99 a piece. They are more money on BMG or it takes 2 vouchers to get them for free plus shipping.
You can cancel anytime which is a plus.

Well, I like this idea better than BMG, because I can order just one and get a decent deal - anytime - same way I (and many others) prefer DV2 to the hassle of columbia house. The club is only a good deal to sign up, after that I never felt it was that great.
About the cheapest I ever got after joining was buy 1 get 3 free and that worked out to around 7+ a CD. Even signing up is just about 50-75 cents a disc cheaper. I was a member forever, still am about a decade now, so i usually get the best offers. This beats that. I easily average at least a CD a month that I buy anyways. I guess if there is not a lot of music you want it is not a good deal.
Its not going to set the world on fire, but it is a convienient and decent deal IMHO.

That's a neat idea. Perhaps on average the BMG/CH deals are slightly better, but the S/H on the later purchases probably hurt the average. Plus if you don't want 5 or 7 or 13 CD's at once, this is a good way to 'ration' your purchases so you can enjoy each one.
But they fall down [for me] in one regard: "No matter what type of music you're looking for, you're guaranteed to find it at yourmusic.com. " Well, six of the 8 bands I just entered, had no results. Granted, they are somewhat esoteric bands, but still.
I wonder if their CD's are just like the ones you'd get at the store. Last time I was with BMG [admittedly years ago], they were 'no-frills', no lyrics, no insert, and it said 'BMG Music CLub' instead of a UPC.

I would say this site would be a good alternative to Columbia House because of their commitments, but you are only committed to buy one cd for BMG so that is the better deal for someone like me.
It's cheaper to do BMG even with their shipping costs. It averages about $4 a cd if you get 12 for 1 (11 free & 1 reg price) plus buy 1 get 3 free.
BMG's cds are just like the ones in store besides the BMG barcode.
In the long run, the great "deal(s)" can't possibly be any better than their normal club. I'll just stick to my average of $5 per cd with my frequent memberships to BMG, especially considering they have exactly the same stuff.

Several ways this can be a good deal:
(1) Box set prices are very reasonable considering the free shipping (BMG base prices for these are cheaper...UNTIL you add the shipping).
(2) Some multi-disc CD/DVD sets are cheaper this way. For instance, BMG and Columbia will usually count them as 2 selections on enrollment packages and they charge more for them (usually $24.98 and up) if you're thinking of buying them as your obligation/fulfillment CD's. I plan to get CD/DVD sets from Indigo Girls, Tom Petty, Tori Amos, and others. Maybe we should start a thread listing these "better deal" multi-disc CD's which are only $5.99.
(3) As others have mentioned, it's really handy to simply order one CD for $5.99 instead of waiting to enroll again and loading up. Personally, I can always select CD's which can be resold to balance the CD's I actually want to add to my collection. However, not everyone has outlets for resale, and they don't want to order a bunch of CD's just to get the few they really want at the time. Even I have times when a friend is looking for a particular CD or I want to buy a present for someone, etc....or maybe I just have a hankering for a CD (maybe need one to make a compilation, etc.) and don't want to wait until the next Buy 1 get 3 free sale. Heck, if you saw some of these newer CD's at Circuit City for $5.99 TOTAL price, wouldn't you pick them up??
In conclusion, just as with any CD/DVD club deal, this can work to your advantage if you play it smart. Jut be sure to put some CD's in your queue to avoid the monthly charge with no CD. I plan to join as soon as I finish this post...which is right now.

I agree, this is a good deal.
I did notice that Jeff Buckley, Neil Young and Tori Amos all had DVD/CD sets available for $5.99. Also, many of the reissued Bob Dylan CDs are listed, which are SACD hybrid format.

Merle Haggard: Down Every Road $23.96

Waylon Jennings: RCA Country Legends-Waylon Jennings $11.98

I buy mostly box sets so I think these are good deals. Most of the ones I got aren't in Columbia House and s/h is too high on sets

Thanks for letting me know about this club; as others mentioned, there are some decent deals to be had on box sets and CD/DVD combos. I ordered the Faces box ($24), and Elton John's SACD 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' ($12). And in queue is a Crowded House collection (CD + DVD for $6).
Also, the Stevie Ray Vaughn collection is a great deal! (3CD + 1DVD for $18). Too bad I already own it....

1. Is it normal CD packaging, with case and booklet, or is it shipped like Netflix?
2. Are the CD's of good quality, or are they inferior copies? (I'm not sure how this can be determined but I'll ask anyways)!

the club is a division of BMG. they are the same cds you'd get anywhere else, with the exception of a barcode. this isn't a cd-rental club, so they wouldn't come like netflix.

Just received an email saying the Sheryl Crow "Greatest Hits" cd would not be available on the current shipping date my queue had set (which was April 4). I moved it up to the top of my queue (Feb 4), and it said it would not be available on that shipping date either. I went ahead and purchased it just to get it. Thought I'd share to let you know:
1) If you want to get a CD through this club (and price), go ahead and build up your queue so you'll be notified if they will no longer carry that CD.
2) If you're interested in the Sheryl Crow "Greatest Hits" (not sure about her other discs) go ahead and buy it now.
On another note, it's not too big of a deal, but I'd like to be able to:
a) let a multi-disc set count as my obligated monthly purchase
and / or
b) be able to create a wishlist of multi-disc sets that I can move to the cart whenever I'm ready to buy.

Ditto here. Radio hasn't impressed me in years, so I haven't heard a lot of new music, but have been listening to my MP3 catalog. But I've been listening to satellite radio a lot, and have gotten interested in a lot of old stuff I missed out the first time. For 4.99, it's worth a shot, if I don't like it, most everything can be sold on Half.com or traded for at least that much credit.
We got our first CD yesterday. Securely packaged, and the only thing id'ing it as 'BMG' was some fine print text on the disk itself saying 'Manufactured for BMG music service under license.' Liner notes, UPC, case, everything else looked just like the Best Buy version.
The only bad thing is, now we have to wait a month before our next title. I know we can just buy them straight out as well, but that could be dangerous. Hmm, maybe if they had an every-two-weeks option.....

Do you ever think that maybe all the "people" on this planet are actually aliens or monkeys, but you see them as humans? Like, behind you and out of your vision, every human is really a monkey.
That's what I feel like reading this thread. I WANT that damn $4.99 price!

Didn't know that. I did see that the box sets were more, and couldn't be put in your queue, but I didn't know your queue price affected the box sets. Definitely a bargain now.

I had a hard time figuring out what CD to get first. I was bummed they didn't have any Techno so I was searching for 80s music. Then I found it.....techno remixes of 80s songs. Jackpot! :)

I have been trying to get in on the 4.99 deal since the beginning of February with no luck at all. I try almost everyday and it always comes up 5.99 for me. I do not understand how some people have been able to get the links to work. Do the links become valid only at certain times of day? It seems as if there is no rhyme or reason to when the links work and when they don't work.

My 'order date' was 3/16, they shipped it 3/17, I got it 3/21, I believe. Not bad at all.
The last couple times the 4.99 link worked, it was *very briefly*. I'm not sure if those are supposed to be 'private links' that got shared, or what, but the one I used lasted maybe 12 hours.

Were you just trying the link to see if it works, or do you need to use the link everytime you order? I mean if you are lucky enough to get the link to work once, the 4.99 is good for as long as you have an account, right?
My signature is a quote from the movie Easy Money. I think it is pretty cool that there is another movie that has the same quote. You are referring to 5000 fingers of Dr. T the 1950's Seuss movie, right? I haven't seen that movie in years. Great movie!

Yes, once you use the link, and set up a new account via that link, all future orders should be 4.99. Every single-disk release I look for now says 4.99 instead of 5.99, as long as I'm logged in, whether it's in my queue or my cart.
A day or so after I did sign up with that link, I logged out and cleared cookies to see if it still worked--it didn't. But once I logged back in, I had my price of 4.99.
Yep, the Dr Seuss film. Very surreal. I don't know if the plumber guy said that exact quote, but I'm sure he said something similar.

I have a quick question.
I just signed up for this service. I saw where it says that if the 1st CD in your queue is unavailable, they send you the 2nd. If they 2nd isn't available, they send you the 3rd. If the 3rd isn't available, they don't send you anything and you aren't charged that month.
My question is, what happens if you only have 2 CDs in your queue and neither are available? Do they send you an e-mail warning you to add something to your queue, or do they just charge you? It's not our fault if both CDs are out of stock, and we certainly have no way to know that information. I sent them an e-mail asking this question, but they haven't responded.
dtcarson
03-23-05, 08:38 PM
I believe someone posted and said if your queue is small, and nothing is in stock, you will neither be sent a disk, nor be charged that month.

While I certainly prefer 4.99 to 5.99, I wonder if the 4.99 link was meant to be somewhat limited, and they figured it got FW'ed, so rather than saying "Sorry, that link was private" after people subbed, they just said, Okay, no more 4.99 for anybody to make it easier for them [a little more sensible to the consumer.]

$4.99 was probably a promotional offer to get people signed. I suspect they always planned to raise prices later. Even so, yourmusic is great if you want to buy 1 or 2 CDs at a time. There's no waiting for B1G3 or other offers or hassling with joining/rejoining.

And while the average cost if you max out the club is perhaps lower, some of the intermediate purchases can 'feel' more expensive.
Plus, signing up and getting 10-15 CD's at a time, then getting 3 or 4 at your fulfillment, is almost overkill. I always have trouble finding 15 things I want all at once.

For the uninitiated:
$2.79 [shipping] * 20 CDs [using Buy One Get Three promotion and Refer-a-Friend] + .9 * $17.95 [10% Off First Purchase] = $71.96 for 20 CDs = $3.60 per CD before taxes [you save .27 per disc on the average]. And after the eighth referral you get a $2.79 CD, and every ninth referral after that.

see the thread about the clubs. with bmg, you can order box sets using your free selections. so at $2.79(shipping)/cd, that's a great deal still. better than $4.99 even.

My guess is it's a glitch with the database and will be fixed. I've currently got 3 items in my queue when I should have about 34- but the ones listed are numbered 8, 23 and 28 just like they were when my queue is full.
The prices are good but I keep seeing weird things with the site. A week or so ago I saw they were listing the last item in my queue as "shipping next" instead of the first. It wasn't close to my ship date so I wasn't too worried and it was fixed in a day or two.
Also the first monthly email I ever got from them said I had 0 items in my queue, but when I checked the site everything was still there. There's been other oddities too, but so far they haven't messed up an actual order for me.
Anyway, I've been ordering 3 or 4 CDs at a time the last couple weeks and that's going to come to a halt on Thursday. I still haven't decided if I want to stay a member- there are still some good deals to be found at $5.99, but...

This problem is bigger than the queue being emptied. I had about 7 or 8 titles in there which are now gone. But more significantly, now I CAN'T FIND ANY OF THEM ON THE SITE. Doing some searches I find that lots of CDs aren't coming up anymore - CDs that did show up yesterday.
I hope this is a temporary glitch. Meanwhile, Thursday 5/12 is my ship date. They'd better fix it fast.
By the way, I'm signed up in the $5.99 plan. Got tired of waiting for $4.99, and then the decided to end those anyway.

I'm still a member and have about 20 CDs in my queue, I'm just going to buy a little slower now. I had over 80 queued before I found out about the price increase- many "must have's" were purchased in groups of 4 or 5 in the past month, and many more impulse additions to my queue were removed. Some items I might have taken a chance with at 4.99 are somehow a little less appealing at 5.99 (I guess I'll never hear Mandy Moore's take on XTC, Joni Mitchell and Todd Rundgren songs from her covers album...*sigh*). On the other hand this site's great if you want to take a chance on some great artists you may have missed the first time around (The Clash, Jethro Tull, Flaming Lips, Bettye Swann, Bob Dylan, Chemical Brothers to name a few for me).

I'd guess they make deals with record companies -- and are probably selling a lot of stuff that is still popular but not necessarily "hot." -- There'd be no reason for ther record companies to sell them "hot" titles at a really reduced rate.
Their selection is ok. I have about 35 CDs in my queue.

If you do not wish to continue your subscription at the $6.99 price, you are free to cancel at any time by accessing your account.
We hope you'll continue to enjoy your subscription and take advantage of our still low price of only $6.99 with free shipping.

Yeah, I got that email too. I've been thinking about canceling anyway because there's just not that much they have that I want. This just helps me make my decision. Maybe in the future when more stuff has been added I'll think about rejoining.

I was thinking of rejoining, but after seeing that they are raising the price to $6.99 a month makes my decision easy.....

I got the email too. I whittled my queue down from 20+ items to about 9 "must haves". I just ordered 5 of those and plan to quit before the end of the month with or without the remaining four.
Their service has been a lot slower lately, taking over a week to ship orders to me. Plus the site has constant bugs (one recent order somehow mutated so it listed 8 copies of each of the CDs I had ordered- even though I only owed them around $19, the order was listed for several days as being a $150+ order). Then finally I got two shipping notice emails on the same day for this order- one said they were shipped on the 24th, one said they were shipped on the 26th- both said I was charged $19 for the order. I notified them about this order and it was cleared up in a couple days, and I was only charged once, but I'm ready to move on from this service (once the Jesus and Mary Chain dual-discs I ordered get out of backorder status).

Wow. That's pretty sucky. Guess I better clear out the 4 or 5 discs in my queue. Mostly P-Funk remasters.
It's amazing how shitty this service has gotten..

Obviously if they're having shipping or billing problems, that's one thing, and I know we're used to 5.99, and really enjoyed the 4.99, but is 6.99 really all that bad for new CDs, with no tax and free shipping [assuming you can find a title you want]? It still seems like it beats the crap out of buying at a B&M or paying 9.99 for an itunes album.

maybe so, but if you work your regular BMG account right, your average cost is far less than 6.99 / cd. even less than 5.99 if you play your cards right.
i'll stick to doing just that!

Yourmusic is good if you reactivate an old account and choose a two-disc set as your next queue item. You get two free CDs that way!

For those who want to extend their 5.99 subscription for a year or longer, you could buy a gift subscription for yourself now, cancel your account when the price hikes, and then redeem the gift subscription:
http://www.yourmusic.com/gift_subscriptions/
The downside is that you'll be paying upfront instead of monthly, but since the subscription goes over the period of a whole year, you get the selection of new releases as they come out.
The longest one gift subscription goes is one year, but you can buy multiple subscriptions now since, according to their FAQ, they never expire:
Yeah that does suck....guess I'm getting spoiled w/ the $5.99/CD but their service has gotten better IMO...my 1st two shipments as a new member came in broken/cracked cases...since then they have been great! Will have to discuss w/ the Mrs. about whether to continue the service!

I'm assuming you meant $6.35, unless you somehow got to keep the $4.99 price.
Anyway, when I lived in WI, I didn't pay tax, but now in NY I do.
from youmusic's site:
http://www.yourmusic.com/help/index_sub.html?faq_section=2&sub_section=taxes
"Yourmusic.com charges state and local taxes, if applicable."
Typically "applicable" means whether or not they have a distribution center or headquarters located in the state you're ordering from.

However, in addition to their quickly inflating prices, I was also referring to their "queue" system. I've had problems with it, such as items disappearing and whatnot.

I've had items disappear from my queue because they're no longer available. I always get an email notifying me though.

Ditto. I've got no complaints about yourmusic. The worse problem I can think of is a broken case or 2, and they sent out a replacement as soon as I emailed them.
OTOH I have had a few run-ins with the BMG club -- they seem to screw up royally every year or 2. It takes a lot more work to keep them honest.

Not a huge deal and I'll probably continue the program. I will stop the impulse buys and just let them come from my queue.
However, this kills their pricing on 2xCDs. Those will now be $13.98! -eek-

Is there anything on there worth getting, deal-wise, anymore?
Box sets or anything????

You are better off with a regular BMG account for box sets and most multi-disc sets. The box and multi sets are priced at 6.99 per disc at Yourmusic and there are usually codes to get them cheaper or with free shipping through BMG.
That said, there are a few cd/dvd sets on Yourmusic that go for the regular 6.99 price and these can be put in your queue.
Yourmusic just had a sale earlier this week for buy 2 get one free. That comes out to cds for 4.66 each. This is the first time that I know of that they had a sale like this.

You used to get a free CD if you reactivated an account. I don't know if that is still true.

I purchased the Bob Dylan Bootlegs Volumes 1-3 boxset for a very good price from yourmusic.com It's cheaper than any traditional B&M or web-based stores. I'm not sure if it'd be cheaper from BMG or not.

Yes, you can still get a FREE CD when you re-activate:

When I click the link nothing states that I'll get a free CD if I reactivate...is it supposed to say that?

No, it should say "Come back today and get a FREE CD!"

Holy thread bump. I actually got in for a short period at $4.99. It only lasted a couple of months until they upped the price to $5.99. I instantly opted out at that point.:)

I had no idea they do sales on the site. How do you guys find out about them? I'm a member, but don't remember seeing e-mails for it.
I've been on and off there for awhile now. Once I run out of thing I want, I'll quit for awhile until they get a bunch of new stuff in I'm interested in. I still think $6.99 is a terrific deal for cds, and I don't have the patience to play the BMG game.

Doctor X posted them while they were around. It looks like the last one was in July of last year, so don't hold your breath for another one.

Yourmusic is overpriced right now. I think the best deal currently is to join the music club (15/1), fulfill with a 1/4 and take advantage of the FREE + s/h codes while they last.
See first post in part 5 of the music club thread for all the details:

Yourmusic has some advantages over BMG:
a) The queue makes a nice wish list, a feature missing from BMG.
b) When items in the queue are about to be discontinued, you will receive a message at the top of the queue.
c) Some boxed sets are cheaper at yourmusic than at BMG. The Doors' Complete Studio Recordings comes to mind.
d) New Arrivals are easier to find and can be viewed on one page.
e) You don't have to buy more than one disc to get a good price.
BMG also has its benefits:
a) Unit price is usually lower than yourmusic if buying multiple items using a discount code.
b) Two-disc sets are especially good deals with the right code.
c) Music Points lead to free (plus shipping) CD's.
d) You can sometimes speak to a human at BMG. Not at yourmusic.
e) BMG doesn't have a dumb name.

My main reason for cancelling my yourmusic subscription was that items in my queue were not going to be available. Since I wanted to make a big order before they dropped out of the catalog, BMG was definitely the way to go -- especially with the FREE CD codes (no purchase necessary) that are still working. If they last, the deal will be - at a quick guess - 32/1 + s/h.
