New PS2s overheat?
I sold my old PS2 on eBay about a month ago for $150 so that I could replace it with the new model. Of course, because of Christmas, PS2s are scarce and I was just going to wait until after Christmas to get my new one. I'm starting to wonder if I did the right thing, however, because my manager at EB Games was telling me how he's on his 3rd one because the other two became very hot while playing. He said the new design had no room for a fan so the unit becomes very hot while playing and may overheat... Has anyone heard about this problem?

Don't know about heat... but... My Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas would not play in my friend's new PS2. Played every other game but that one. And GTA:SA plays fine in my original style PS2. Anyone else experienced this?

If you use the PS2 horizontal it can get pretty hot underneath. However, I used mine that way for awhile and it never overheated or gave me any problems.
It is worth the extra $14 to get the vertical stand for it and use it that way. No heat gets trapped under the console. After playing GTA for 5 hours the console was only warm and it cooled down in a matter of minutes once I stopped playing.
I've easily put 100+ hours on my PStwo since buying it and haven't run into any problems. I'm sure Sony designed it to handle the heat it creates.

no problems with mine. Since I won't be seeing GT4 this year...I decided to rip out GT3 and play for a bit. 4 hours of constant racing didn't seem to do anything. My console sits horizontally on my DVD player.

I have both and the new smaller one runs VERY hot. The old model you could keep on for hours and it would get warm but never worrying hot, the little one on the other hand gets HOT. I am surprised it carries a longer warranty than the big one.

No problems with the new PStwo and GTA:SA... I spent a few weeks down in Georgia for training and clocked in quite a few hours of SA. I personally havent noticed any heat problems and my PStwo is left horizontal. If I think of it tonight maybe ill place something under it to elevate it a centimeter or so to help the heat get out. And in reference to the OP, yes the PStwo does have a fan, ive seen some pics with the "worky bits" exposed it looks like the little fan from a computer video card's heat sink (go figure)

I don't understand the ads: the "slimmer, more capable PS2." I can see it's slimmer, but how is it more capable? It doesn't work with the hard drive. The network capability was already integrated into the larger model.
Maybe it's more capable of getting hot?

I still have one of the original PS2 models, although I purchased it in 2001. Anyway, I use it fairly regularly and used it for my DVD player for almost 3 years. I also keep it horizontal. To this day, no problems.

In any case, I still think this model is less capable, because even if the older one didn't have the network adaptor built in, you could still get one and use the hard drive. I suppose you could call the new one more capable out of the box compared to the old one, but ultimately you can do more with the older one.

Well, the new one also has progressive scan capabilities (which I think for DVD playback were not in the original) as well as, IIRC, an integrated IR port for the DVD remote.

The bigger PS2 also had progressive scan and the ir port added the last year or so. The only thing really different about the slim one is the built in port for online gaming.
