View Full Version : New PS2's overheat?

I sold my old PS2 on eBay about a month ago for $150 so that I could replace it with the new model. Of course, because of Christmas, PS2s are scarce and I was just going to wait until after Christmas to get my new one. I'm starting to wonder if I did the right thing, however, because my manager at EB Games was telling me how he's on his 3rd one because the other two became very hot while playing. He said the new design had no room for a fan so the unit becomes very hot while playing and may overheat... Has anyone heard about this problem?

Don't know about heat... but... My Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas would not play in my friend's new PS2. Played every other game but that one. And GTA:SA plays fine in my original style PS2. Anyone else experienced this?

Have had mine since October...no problems. Have run it for three hours or more at one time and the system peformed fine.

If you use the PS2 horizontal it can get pretty hot underneath. However, I used mine that way for awhile and it never overheated or gave me any problems.

It is worth the extra $14 to get the vertical stand for it and use it that way. No heat gets trapped under the console. After playing GTA for 5 hours the console was only warm and it cooled down in a matter of minutes once I stopped playing.

I've easily put 100+ hours on my PStwo since buying it and haven't run into any problems. I'm sure Sony designed it to handle the heat it creates.

no problems with mine. Since I won't be seeing GT4 this year...I decided to rip out GT3 and play for a bit. 4 hours of constant racing didn't seem to do anything. My console sits horizontally on my DVD player.

Works perfectly. I do recommend the vertical stand, as was mentioned above.

I have both and the new smaller one runs VERY hot. The old model you could keep on for hours and it would get warm but never worrying hot, the little one on the other hand gets HOT. I am surprised it carries a longer warranty than the big one.

So no one else had a problem with a PStwo and GTA:SA ???

I can't imagine that that would be a common problem. Otherwise there'd be a lot of pissed off people.

I figure i would have heard about it by now if it was common. But it makes me suspect my friend's PS2 may be on the fritz.

No problems with the new PStwo and GTA:SA... I spent a few weeks down in Georgia for training and clocked in quite a few hours of SA. I personally havent noticed any heat problems and my PStwo is left horizontal. If I think of it tonight maybe ill place something under it to elevate it a centimeter or so to help the heat get out. And in reference to the OP, yes the PStwo does have a fan, ive seen some pics with the "worky bits" exposed it looks like the little fan from a computer video card's heat sink (go figure)

I put in 60 hours so far on GTA: SA with my PStwo with no problems at all.

No problems with overheating or SA here on the new PS2 for me.

I don't understand the ads: the "slimmer, more capable PS2." I can see it's slimmer, but how is it more capable? It doesn't work with the hard drive. The network capability was already integrated into the larger model.

Maybe it's more capable of getting hot? :)

I have logged many hours on my new ps2 with no problems whatsoever.

I have an old one and recently got a new smaller one. I have played GTA SA for several hours straight and while it does get warm, it has never overheated.

I've had the slimmer model since it came out, just pulled an all nighter with Mark of Kri from 11-6 or so, unit was warm but no overheating. Not using a vertical stand.

I still have one of the original PS2 models, although I purchased it in 2001. Anyway, I use it fairly regularly and used it for my DVD player for almost 3 years. I also keep it horizontal. To this day, no problems.

I thought the old model did not have an integrated NIC. I thought you had to pay extra for that, but now the new version has it included.

Yes, but I thought that the NIC became a standard part of the larger PS2 last year when they produced the online pack with ATV Fury. I thought they were producing all their systems with it included from that point on, but I could be wrong.

In any case, I still think this model is less capable, because even if the older one didn't have the network adaptor built in, you could still get one and use the hard drive. I suppose you could call the new one more capable out of the box compared to the old one, but ultimately you can do more with the older one.

Well, the new one also has progressive scan capabilities (which I think for DVD playback were not in the original) as well as, IIRC, an integrated IR port for the DVD remote.

The bigger PS2 also had progressive scan and the ir port added the last year or so. The only thing really different about the slim one is the built in port for online gaming.

The new version does load faster, so that would make it MORE capable than the older version in that sence.

Really?

I got used to the load times on the Xbox and GameCube so the PStwo still seems slow as hell. Didn't realize it was actually faster than the older models.

gift for kids opened today, plays for about an hour and overheats. Going to try to stand up and see if that makes difference. But guess it's going back, won't find another one anytime soon. I have older ps2 and it's stays on all day with no problem and it's in a storage unit. Anyone with any ideas please write

Thanks Micki

When you guys say overheat what do you mean? You mean it gets hot and stops working or the unit just gets hot.

I used mine horizontal at first and it got hot, but it never froze up or stopped working.

I use mine in the horizontal position...just finished a 3-4 hour stint and not one problem. The unit was warm but not hot by any means.

It's a console, not an ice-cube tray!

Hey, is the new unit as LOUD as the old one (humming sound)? I'm just curious because I'm watching a DVD right now and I can almost hear the PS2 over the TV!

The new model PS2 is much quieter.

The bank of fans, and the fan grating up front, are completely gone.

The only fan is on the chip in the back.

The power transformer is mid wire, so they don't need as much cooling.

Well, I managed to score myself one today. I was lucky, some kid tried to use his mother's credit card at my work which we turned him down, and I got his unit. Lucky the had held it from him or I wouldn't of have a chance. I can't get over how small it is compared to the old one! It was definitely worth the month wait from selling my old one to getting my new one.

I'm not worried about it overheating. I realized my boss probably plays his unit in much longer intervals than I do. The longest I'll normally play a game without taking a break is an hour. I played a movie and had it on for about 3 hours, and while the unit got warm, it didn't get hot by any means.

Plus it's really quiet, and I can now use my DVD remote again (I lost the plug-in sensor in the process of moving).

I've got a slim one and have been playing GT3 with it flat on the carpet and it runs fine. I haven't felt if it gets hot or not, but chips can run way hotter than you can stand to touch anyway.
