Very cute.
Sadly, it won't change anything, unless those signatures comes with free blow jobs, then they may think about it.

OK... now you have my attention...
I don't like sports games, but I love blowjobs - put an offer on the table.

i'll sign, usually these are worthless because the author doesn't follow up on them in the proper manner. Get enough sigs, and then contact the company professionally as well as others.
Now mind you, this is already a done deal, not much you can do about it, other then let EA know they suck as well as getting the word out to other companies, that's fun in itself.
More importantly, vote with your dollars by not buying madden in the future, its that simple in this case. For that matter, ban all EA content from your library.

I'm sure a near-billion-dollar deal will crumble under the weight of the groudswell of support for an internet petition. Nothing makes powerful executives weak in the knees more than knowing a few online geeks will be disappointed with their proposed business endeavor.

Who are you signing this petition against? EA or NFL?
It was the NFL who decided to license to only one company. EA just happened to have the most money to bid. If Sega would have bid more money than EA, then Sega would be the only ones making NFL games.
This was the NFL's doing, no one else's. If you have complaints, throw them towards the NFL for not allowing competition, not EA for having money.

Come on Josh. We all know who proposed that the NFL only give one license. Someone put a bunch of green stuff in front of their face and asked them for an exclusive. To think otherwise is being naive.

EA has been trying to throw money at the NFL for years. To think otherwise is being naive. The NFL is only following what other sports organizations have done and signed exclusive deals with game publishers. The NFL is not the first to do this, and they will not be the last.
Again, it is EA who won out because they had the most money to put on the table. If Microsoft had the ability to put out a good NFL title, they would probably had won the bidding war and Xbox would be the only console to have the NFL. Luckily, Microsoft Game Studio shut down after last year, so they were out of contention.
Did EA plan this all along? Did they force Microsoft to stop making football games (as a requirement of bringing EA games online for Xbox) so they would ensure the top bid for NFL rights?

You're right, MS probably got wind of what was in the works and acted first. Smart planning on their half.
The sad thing is EA is buying a monopoly of an entire genre of games. What if id software owned a patent on FPS and decided to enforce it so only they could make a FPS and it was Doom? That'd suck big time. This sucks too.
I see your point, it takes two to tango, yes the NFL is being greedy but we all know EA orchestrated this. Everyone has their price, including the NFL. However not everyone is so filled with avarice that they have to buy off the competition.
EFF EA and EFF Madden.

You know I was thinking. Whenever a new system comes out, it's never been Madden that has set the benchmark for graphics and game play. In the 8-bit era it was Tecmo football. In the 16-bit era Joe Montana football. In the 32-bit era it was 989 Studios football. In the current generation it was Sega football.
Madden has always been a follower, not a leader. So the next generation they won't have anyone to follow. I guess they could steal talent away from other companies, but to me it's not a question of design or programming since they obviously have been able to afford it for a long time. It seems more of a company thing.
Hell the sad thing for them is we won't even have a measuring stick to judge them against anyone else. They better put out an amazing football engine built from the bottom up for the next generation or else they are in for a rude awakening.

They don't have to be contrite for making a good business decision, but EA should be ashamed that this was necessary to beat the competition.

Also, I hope that with the spread of online gaming and general console connectedness, this allows fans of Sega etc. to create and distribute accurate rosters with ease.

I'm not understanding how this will drive other football games out of contention, but I've never been a big sports fan and don't generally play sports games. What's stopping someone like Sega from making a great playing football game, just without the NFL? Is a jersey and player name really that important? Heck, they could even throw in a create your own player/team but so you could put the NFL guys in there.
With that, I do agree that what EA did was pretty down and dirty.

The only "petition" that will ever work is if enough people don't buy Madden.

I agree completely. These petitions are worthless. The only way to hurt them is not to buy their products. I am not buying any EA games, regardless of how much I want to play them (NBA Street Vol 3, Burnout 3, etc). It doesn't bother me that much, since there are many games I want to play too. But obviously, not everyone can stay away from his/her favorite games/sports/whatever, so it is all a matter of personal decision. But for me, it is easy to ignore EA completely, because their games are usually lowest-denominator type ports (PS2->Xbox & GCN) with a few exceptions.
And if I want to play Madden that bad, I can play last year's version for $5 (or less) used and it is basically the same game anyhow! :D

In the 16-bit era Joe Montana football. In the 32-bit era it was 989 Studios football. In the current generation it was Sega football.
Tecmo ruled the 8-bit era, not only because they put out great games (which they did...even Tecmo Basketball on the NES was outstanding), but also because they had no real competition. Ten Yard Fight? Rudimentary. John Elway? Possibly the worst football game ever made. While Madden was out for PC and Comm64, they did not release a true 8bit challenger to Tecmo. As far as 16-bit, Joe Montana (or Sportstalk...whatever you want to call it) came first, but, unless revisionist history has completely taken over, I recall that an overwhelming majority of people preferred the gameplay (I'm not sure about the graphics) of Madden to the Sega franchise, which always put out a nice product, but was never more than a nice little alternative to Madden. As far as gameplay inovations, Madden popularized the "verticle" gameplay that all football games (including the internet's beloved ESPN) now employ. But lets get back to that timeline. In the 32-bit era. 989 got a good jump on Madden, by virtue of the fact that Madden realized they created a bad game a held off releasing their initial title on the PS. 989 did have a nice few years, and this was the first true test that they had faced. But something happend and while Madden continued to improve, 989 went to shit. In the "modern" era of games, the reputation has been, fair or not, (and this holds for basketball games too) that EA has put out the more arcade-like games and Sega has published more Sim-like titles. Personally, I have always preferred the gameplay of Madden to ESPN. The physics, the smoothness. It has always appealed to me. As far as ESPN, the graphical presentation and the slick ESPN liscensing have been what's drawn me to it. But if I had to pick one game, the answer was always Madden. And usually, my tradition has been to buy Madden, play through a dynasty or so, and then pick up ESPN cheap for an nice alternative at the end of the season. You're making it seem as though people only buy Madden for the name, but in my opinion, and the opinion of many others, Madden has always been the better game.
As far as this ridiculous petition, you guys are making seem as though the NFL is an innocent, naive, doe-eyed entity easily duped by the evil money-hungy hearless bastards that run EA. The NFL's suit's are just as shrewd and money hungry as the guys at EA and if they didn't think that this was in their best interest, they would never have signed the deal and I hardly think that an internet petition is going to make them see "the error of their ways." I truly hope that all this speculation of a non-competition motivated, very badly put-together, $70 football game is not the reality that we are facing. However unlikely, if that scenario does happen, sales will go down (just like they did for 989, Nfl Fever, and every other game the decided to rest on it's successes and not improve) and both companies will see that this was a bad idea and this won't happen again.

Hows about I dont and say I did. Petitions are useless, and electonic ones even worse. I've never seen one that worked, and I've never seen a letter writing campagin work either.

Hmmm, must remember to proofread posts before opening mouth. Let me rephrase - any form of ELECTRONIC protest is next to useless. Real physical letters to the company in question is the only way to get the message across. I dont know why I said that letter writing doesnt work (Quantum Leap, the old school Star Trek and Mononoke are three examples where it does).
Disregard that bit. The remainder of the statment still stands. If your really pissed, get a pen and a piece of paper, voice your concerns and put a stamp on it. Anything else is wasting your time.
