I would say House of Flying Daggers, but don't go in expecting it to be as good as Hero. I've watched HOFD a few times now and while the action was good and the use of color was great, both my wife and I found parts of the storyline to be a bit melodramatic. It is a good movie though, and rather enjoyable.

I loved House of Flying Daggers - I took it as martial arts opera, and accordingly, I found the melodrama both acceptable and fitting. It's definitely worth seeing after Hero and the action is arguably better on its own terms. I'd also check out Tsui Hark's Once Upon a Time in China series (or at least the first one) for good martial arts action with Jet Li. Some of it can be hokey, but that's how many Hong Kong films are, especially from that era.

Definitely the most logical next movie would be House of Flying Daggers. I seem to be the only one, but I like it more than Hero.
There aren't really a lot of martial art, opera type movies like Hero & CTHD, because few have the budget to look as clean & wide-scale as those movies.
Another movie of that type though would be Musa again with Ziyi Zhang in it. It's a decent movie.

If you appreciate the historical time period of ancient China in Hero (i.e. the story behind the story in Hero), you may also appreciate The Emperor and the Assassin.

Check out Zatoichi. It is not the same type of film but it is more fun to watch. It has really cool sword fights and funny. The CGI is kind of distracting but I personally liked it more than Hero. As for HOFD; it's alright but Hero is much better.

Based on the fact that I, too, enjoyed CTHD and Hero, I would recommend the following:
Musa (Korea)
Emperor and the Assassin (China)
Bichunmoo (Korea)
Iron Monkey (HK)
Fong Sai Yuk I, II (HK)
Sword in the Moon (Korea)
Onmyoji (Japan)
Warriors of Heaven and Earth (China)
Twilight Samurai (Japan)
Samurai Fiction (Japan)
Owl's Castle (Japan)
Tai Chi Master (HK)
Zatoichi (Japan)
House of Flying Daggers (China)
Dragon Inn (HK)
Once Upon a Time in China I, II, III (HK)
and of course any of the Kurasawa greats: Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, The Hidden Fortress, Ran, Throne of Blood, etc. (all Japan)
Well, that should get you well on your way.

I'll add to prymal's list (though it just occurred to me that the thread-starter might not be region-free as of now (plus my suggestions are broader in scope than might be of interest to lovers of "Hero"), but maybe some might find it of interest........and I've got some time to kill):
The Legend of the Evil Lake (Korea)
When the Last Sword is Drawn (Japan)
Gojoe (Japan) - R1 available
Aragami (Japan) - R1 available
A Chinese Ghost Story (HK) - R1 available I think
The Bride with White Hair (HK) - R1 available I think
A Touch of Zen (HK) - R1 available
The Emperor's Shadow (China) - R1 available
Harakiri (aka: Seppuku) (Japan)
Damo (Korea - TV series)
White Dragon (new release coming from HK)
lots of Shaw Brothers films

avoid Wong Kar-Wai's "Ashes of Time" like the plague! it has absolutely nothing to do with the novels they were based upon and also, it promotes beastiality! lol!
someone shoulda clued in Mr. Wong and tell him that people don't care about seeing people sleeping with cows!

I wish someone had warned me earlier. I tried to enjoy this, based on random recommendations, but it was simply too difficult. I must be dense.
