DVD Talk Forum 2nd annual Cult TV Tournament Nominations. (LAST DAY TO VOTE!!)

hey kids! you might remember last year I did a sci fi / fantasy / genre / cult TV series tournament, where everyone voted for thier favorite shows in a voting tournament. Well, last year I never got a chance to finish it, because I had to leave town in an emergancy. This time I promise we will make it to the end.

This thread is where everyone nominates up to 10 TV shows they want to be in the Tournament. the top 64 shows with the most nominations will be entered in the tournament.

Rules for nominations...
- pick 10 or less shows you want to be nominated. anyone who picks more than 10 will not have thier nominations counted.
- ANY television show at all can be nominated, if you think Silver Spoons is a "cult" show, that's great.
- shows with spin offs count as different series. (for example, you must say which of the 5 Star Trek series or 2 Stargate series you are nominating and "Buffy/Angel" is not a show, it's two shows)

vote below and be creative!

Most of these aren't "cult" shows, by my definition of the word (Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, etc. - far too big fanbases to be considered "cult").

Someone's already nominated THE PRISONER, ALIEN NATION and TWIN PEAKS, so here are my additions:

Nowhere Man

The Untouchables (1993-1994 Version)

Most of my favorites have been named already, but let's add Star Trek: DS9 and Babylon 5 to the list.

Guys, the shows that get the most nominations will make it in the tournament, so please, don't be afraid to list a favorite show if it's already been listed.

Not sure how to truly define cult, but these have a big following and I enjoy them (no order). Not sure why most of them start with S

South Park
Seinfeld
Simpsons
Sopranos
Scrubs
Newsradio
Family Guy
Arrested Development
Greg the Bunny
The Job

Considering what happened last time, you should probably set up some tie-breaker rules. I would also suggest seeding the first 64 based on number of nominating votes. We had some unfortunate head-to-head matchups in early rounds last time.

In no order:

1. Babylon 5
2. Star Trek: DS9
3. Alien Nation
4. Space: Above & Beyond
5. X-Files
6. Firefly
7. G vs E
8. Star Trek: TNG
9. My So-Called Life
10. Sliders

I second the seeding notion. I would hate for B5 to go against DS9 in the first round.

Last time I picked all the first round match-ups at complete random selection. I wrote the names of all the shows on index cards, shuffled them, laid them all out face down on the table and had my girlfriend pick them out at random. I thought it turned out pretty fair that way and gave us some interesting match ups. I think no matter how you do it somebody is going to be mad because thier favorite show got matched up against "Star Trek" or "Buffy" on the first round. Personally I think it would be rather boring and predictable if all the first round matches were 'popular hit show' vs 'show that nobody has heard of'. However, I'm opened minded and willing to do it a different way if you guys have ideas.

Considering what happened last time, you should probably set up some tie-breaker rules.
I remember last time there was one tie and it was in the 3rd or 4th round and it was oddly enough "Star Trek TOS" vs "Star Trek TNG". I remember I did a single re-vote on that match-up and the choises were "Star Trek TOS", "Star Trek TNG", 'niether' (which would have resulted in the show they were to face in the next round getting a free pss), or 'both' (which would have resulted in, as they say in pro wrestling, A Three Way Dance! in the next round) A little silly, I know, but I was having fun with it. again, if anyone has ideas on tie breaking I'm all ears

Personally I think it'd be cool to see the quarter brackets set up as sub-tournaments of sorts, with similarly themed shows competing. For example, all animated shows would fight it out, all space/futuristic sci-fi, all comedies, etc. We could crown individual "genre champs", which would then face each other to find the overall cult champ. A simplified version of what I mean is below:

Sci Fi Division

Star Trek
vs
Babylon 5

Farscape
vs
ST: The Next Generation

vs the winner of

Comedy Division

Family Guy
vs
Futurama

Simpsons
vs
South Park

Comedy Division

Arrested Development
vs
Greg the Bunny

The Office
vs
Sports Night

Fantasy/Horror/Non-Space Sci Fi Division

Buffy
vs
Twilight Zone

Angel
vs
X-Files

Etc., the examples and categories are not meant to be all-encompassing. It's just to illustrate what I was aiming for. Seeing how there is an inbalance between some genres, there could be 8 sub-tourneys, but some genres might fill twice the number of overall slots.
