Mine doesn't say anything about it.either When I placed this preorder, this set was going to have commentaries and a bonus disc. Then they dropped the commentaries, and I almost cancelled. But I hung on for the new transfers and the bonus disc. Now that doesn't even come with it, even though they say it does on their OWN WEBSITE. I just called DDD, and they have no idea what I am talking about, so evidently this wasn't included in any of them
There are more important things in my life then getting a Rocky Bonus disc, but this is false advertising.
First a crappy Rambo Trilogy re-issue. Now a crappy, barebones Rocky Set re-issue.

I know some of you are pissed, but I am still very excited about this set. I sold my original for $50 and got this for $40 and it has Rocky II in anamorphic and updated transfers and audio. I will take a little cropping in the transfers (over the dirt and artifacts of the original) any day. I am pleased with this set.

Nope - the video was probably transferred from a high definition negative though.

I was in BB today to get the Top Gun SE which also had a BB Bonus Disc. Not ALL copies had the bonus disc in them. In fact, I only saw ONE copy of the full screen with the bonus disc and I actually had to go get someone to go in the back to get a widescreen version with it. It's very possible that this is an extremely limited bonus only available in certain packages with stickers on them, as with Top Gun.

"Lesser release" is a matter of opinion.
A couple weeks ago, we saw a LOT of people here say they were buying the superbit Spider-Man 2 instead of the 2 disc edition. To them, having the better picture and sound was more important than features... I don't think they considered their decision a lesser release.
jeffkjoe

Yeah, but regardless of anamorphic transfers, the difference in audio/video quality for the two ROCKY box sets is marginal.

Once again, having all FIVE ROCKY MOVIES IN ANAMORPHIC is not a marginal advantage to some people. Ebay paid me $8 to get this release and I am more than happy to finally enjoy some of my favorite movies in enhanced widescreen. This is a good buy and I am happy.

This is getting confusing. Has anybody actually compared picture quality between the two sets? Does anyone actually have their copies in hand, and are not just venting based on other people's opinions? The set is relatively cheap for a five disc set. I believe it's worth douple dipping if you really want the anamorphic remasters and don't care too much about the extras. Assuming the PQ improvement is marginal, marginal is what compelled many to buy the Superbit version of SP2. Frankly, I wish MGM would've just remastered the transfers and kept all the original bonus features.

The Best Buy I went to had like 10 copies of the Rocky Set, and not a single one had a sticker or an extra disc. The BB employees were even clueless that they carried it, so they were no help with the "extra disc". In fact, while I was in an aisle, I heard a BB employee tell a customer that Fantasia was not in stock because "Disney only makes a limited number of them per year" and that they were out of them "because it's christmas-time". This, after I heard a woman arguing with one of them that the Widescreen-only ROTK:EE was an "outrage" because she doesn't have a widescreen television.
However, the less-than-competent cashier gave me a nice bonus - using the 10% coupon from my email (see the bargains forum, not everyone got them), which was supposed to only be 10% off of one item, I got 10% off of rocky and 10% off of ROTK:EE, then he gave me 10% off of the entire purchase. $54.55 out the door for both sets isn't too shabby...bonus disc or not. And really, at this point, the first release is $7 at Wal-Mart, make your own 2-disc rocky set and deal with it. When you want to watch the movie, watch the new one, when you want to watch extras, watch the old one. Then everyone is happy.

So was there misreporting of the real specifics on this re-release, or did they change things at the last minute? I could swear I read something about Stallone recording commentary for the sequels.

UPDATE:
My ROCKY ANTHOLOGY, which was bought at Best Buy, had the sixth disc.
It's packaged in a cardboard sleeve WITHIN the box set. It's hard to see, but it's there. It's really thin. It's found to the right of the keepcase of ROCKY V.
For what it's worth, my box had a silver circular sticker that said that the disc was included.
And boy, it's a GREAT documentary.

Hi, I bought the Rocky Anthology today from Costco, it is on sale this week for $30.99. Mine came with the 6th bonus disk which is an A&E Biography on Sylvester Stallone which runs 50 min long, but the sticker on the box for the A&E disk states that it is for a limited time, so that is probably why some of you are not getting the bonus disk. So do I. The fact remains that 99% of people would not even have noticed that the picture is cropped on Rocky if someone hadn't told them. And the PQ is significantly improved IMHO. The grain, dirt, scratches are gone, the contrast is improved and so is the level of detail. I personally didn't feel that the colors were oversaturated. That said, I'm still keeping my Rocky SE for the extras.

Ok
1st. If you want the bonus disc, you have to make sure that the sticker that states the A&E biography is on the package, it is on the top left hand side of it, otherwise you do not get it.
2nd. Very disapointed in MGM yet again, no extra's on this box set except for trailers??? The previous box set had a SE of Rocky at least, now they take that away?
3rd. It was talked about for quite a while that 1-4 would be remastered in HD, but the 5th one would not, well I think I can explain what happened there, Rocky 1-4 were JUST re-mastered in HD for the set, Rocky 5 was re-mastered in HD about a year ago, the HD version has been running on a channel called HD Net, so they could not say that 5 was from a brand new transfer, but is is from a HD transfer.
4th. Still not very impressed by the picture quality on this set, most of the specks of dirt are gone, but not all of them, there is quite a bit of grain still left in the pictures, and the audio is far from what it should be (5 was a nice improvement), especially part 4.
5th. Rocky is the second most successful series to MGM, yet they continue to treat it like garbage, in a time period where dvd sets are being released with hours and hours of special features, MGM decides to put out a set that takes away what little features the previous set had? MGM continues to give more attention to titles most people have never heard of, nor care about (again, I said most, I know there are some), Killer Klowns from Outer space had a better SE than Rocky did.
I so want another company to buy the rights to the Rocky series and do this set right, it is really about time they did!

MGM have been took to court many time over this crap and the public have won on occations! remember the little widescreen image on the booklets and inside the dvd box, they used to say Look how much more picture you get! wow! with a little picture example of wisescree and fullscreen.
People in the UK took them to court, as that was crap as many films even full screen ones had it in the inside and you got no more footage or it was a cropping issue and people in the UK theres cases in court!
So have they advertised this in any publication? magazines, newpapers with extras? if so they should be in the wrong and you could take them to the cleaners hahaha.
and they always lied, they have many dvds which say anamorphic widescreen and Duel Layer dvd on the box and they are not at all! so small things to some,
but to me MGM ARE EVIL AND NEED A SLAPPING!
If my dvd set comes from canada and theres no extra dvd there will be a slapping to do as I will just Ebay the bugger for far more than I paid! as people on Ebay are Turnip heads in the UK!

Ditto, except I didn't buy mine in Montgomery. If you check the Bargains forum, there might be a rebate for the Rocky set, but I don't know for sure.
For those who do get the bonus disc, opening the little sleeve it comes in is tricky. Take a pin, needle, or a fingernail and gently separate the two sides of the sleeve that have been glued together. Look closely to see which side is glued and which side is the fold of the sleeve.

But I did finally decide to get it today at Best Buy since they had a single copy with the bonus disc, and I had a 10% coupon to use courtesy of a thread in the bargain forum. I also looked at Costco, which had many copies in stock, but decided to pass since there was no way to distinguish if they had the extra disc inside unless the box was either opened or weighed. I asked in Costco, and they told me that all of the Rocky sets had the bonus disc. I just bought it today and I'm extremely dissapointed that in 2004, MGM can't put together a definitive collection of the Rocky series. The movies looked way better than before, but the lack of extras is unacepptable. The 6th disc is pack like a demo disc instead of being an important feauturette that could be added in the packaging of any of the movies. I bought the Anthology today because the were at Cosco at a bargain price of $6 per movie or $5 per disc and I love I through IV, but I'm still keeping my special edition of Rocky.

I showed her my receipt for Top Gun (which I will return tomorrow) and she took my word for it on Rocky.

after reading all of these posts I kind of regret selling off my old Rocky Box and ordering the new one (should be receiving it any day now from DDD). The main reason I sold it and bought the new one was because of the subtitle mess up on Rocky 4. After reading these posts, seems like the new box isnt much of a step up from the old box (except for the new transfer of Rocky). I assumed the old extras would be carried over, or new extras would be added. Are the subtitles in Rocky 4 even correct now? Also, to people who own both box sets, which one is better?

I'm really happy with the new set. I like the fact that I own the best presentations of these movies currently on the market (besides the negligible cropping) I purchased mine at Target and my indeed came with the bonus A&E disc. There was a sticker on the outside of the packaging that said it'd be included. I owned the prior set and was happy to sell it off. And if i ever get the urge to want to check out out the extras that I'm missing on the current set, I can easily pick up the first Rocky for $7 new or used for under $5 used almost anywhere. I even prefer the new artwork for each dvd and the redesigned cover for the box itself.

Yes, they are corrected on the new set. More accurately, they are actually present on the new set. :)

I picked mine up at Costco and it had the sticker on the box (not visible before opening).
Are you saying that the sticker was not visible before opening due to the large "long box" that the set comes housed in at Costco?
I picked this up today at costco for $30.99 and completely forgot about the bonus disc. I didn't know if I should chance opening it or just forget about the bonus disc. Has anyone seen the material on the bonus disc & is it even worth the trouble?
31 bucks for 5 classic(?) movies is awesome so I can't complain about the price. I can complain about how poorly done the set it as far as supplements go. You can't convince me that the stars of the Rocky movies have anything better to do than to contribute to the anthology. MGM once again goes cheapo on the Rocky flicks!

For the Costco sets, just open the outside long box-- NOT the inside actual DVD set-- and look for the sticker on it. It should be a circle silver sticker that has the A&E logo and info on it.
If it's not there exchage it, they'll take because the actual DVD isn't open plus they'll understand if you tell them what's up.

Well, I just did what you said and...drumroll...the silver sticker was on the box inside the longbox! Opened it up and the disc is in a wafer-thin cardboard holder. It gives a small description of the 50 minute program. Cool!
By the way...there are no inserts in any of the cases. Disc art is only on the first 2 movies. And the cover art is terrible on all but the first movie.

Well the Big Slipcase is full english :) (a piece of paper in bilingual on back easily removed)
The Beefy Sturdy Box is full english too :)
the actual dvds are almost, as the covers are 100% english except for one small word (very small) saying Version Francasise Incluse, this text is maybe 3mm high and very small :)
the Spines are 100% english and the back of each dvd is pretty much all english, with some small part in french, in other words this is how bi lingual covers should be if they are going to force it on people, as its not forced on you and really not bad at all :)
more like 90% fEnglish and 10% french, and they dont look crap like most other companies Bi Lingual covers.

I see some folk getting angry with retailers. I don't think it's fair to blame ANY retailer for this. The blame lies FIRMLY with MGM. The retailers only advertised what they knew based on what MGM told them.
I've done a screengrab comparison for the R2 UK Special Edition vs the new R1 Hidef boxset edition.
R2 UK Special Edition
http://www.btinternet.com/~squirrel.god/files/rocky/rocky1_ch3_12.35_r2.jpg
As you can see, the new R1 release does look slightly reframed, though which is correct is hard to say (i.e. more does not automatically equal best).
I did a quick comparison of the DD 5.1 and DTS soundtracks too and while both are lacking in LFE, the DTS soundtrack is significantly sharper, clearer and contains more detail. Dialogue is particularly improved with the DTS, which is a great help in a film that consists mostly of mumbling :D
R2 UK (ours was already anamorphic)
http://www.btinternet.com/~squirrel.god/files/rocky2/rocky2_ch3_r2.jpg
Seems to be some re-framing going on here as well, though in this case, the R1 Hi-Def Remaster seems to display more of the original negative.
I shall be keeping this new boxset. Shame about the lack of extras, but this is a definite improvement IMO. I may keep my R2 UK Rocky boxset for the extras, not decided yet ...

The pictures not an imrpovement, its all in your eyes, I like the whitness of the R2 dvd, none are exactly clearer than the other to my eyes, they are about the same really. The R1 just looks like the contrast has been toned down so you can see a little clearer, but its now darker. overall I have no idea what to say :)

Bear in mind that if your computer display is not calibrated, then you're going to see those screenshots differently ;)
The new hi-def version has lots more detail and is much sharper.
Last night, I watched Rocky I, II and III from the new R1 boxset and I tell you, I could not go back to the other transfers now. It's that big of an improvement :)

Weird. If it says so on the front, then all reports say that it will be in there. The 6th disk is just in a cardboard sleeve - it's just tucked into the box somewhere, so make sure you have a good look inside, including in the individual keepcases.

I can't remember the exact wording, but it's on the front and clearly states that the set contains a 6th bonus disk. In some stores, like HMV, they have had two piles, one of the 5-disk set and one of the 6-disker.

They were VERY courteous, and apologized for the problem. She told me the bonus discs would be mailed out around January 15th, and she took down my nae and address.
Again, she was very helpful, apologetic, and courteous. I am pleased with MGM's reponse, and look forward to hopefully getting the disc soon.

I like you called MGM and MGM customer service tried to place the blame on the retailers. Saying it was their issue. When I mentioned that the MGM website listed the 6th Disc prior to release date as well as most retailers. The customer service dude skirted the issue and blamed the retailers. I'm glad MGM took care of you. But as far as I'm concerned MGM is trying to lay the blame on the retailers. When they are the ones to blame. I went from being courteous to totally upset. There's nothing more upsetting then when customer service people lie or avoid blame.
EVERYONE who got scammed should call MGM and bitch.

Yeah, I can't see them agreeing to send anything over to the UK.
Even though Universal Canada were great about replacing our Region 1 Back to the Future disks, I have emailed Universal on two matters since then and as soon as they asked for my address and realised I was in the UK, they ceased all communications.
I can't imagine MGM being any different, sadly :(
Australians might have some luck though, since region locked players are actually illegal over there. What an enlightened nation they are :)

Dear Sir.
We apologize for the matter , unfortunatly the studio had told us that
the bonus disc would be available.
When making the print for this bonus cd only a certain quantity were made.
I would also like to mention that only the western hemisphere of Canada
got the box set with the bonus cd.
We are going to get some of the printed bonus cd's though we ignore the
quantity and are not sure of who will or will not get this bonus cd. -ohbfrank-
