Ive just gone Region Free

OK, im new to Region Free (but better late than never )

I was wondering which regions people prefer ? ie all things being equal would you rather have an R3 or a UK R2 ? The main advantage of R2 I can see is that you know it will be in English and have no subtitles that you may possibly not be able to turn off. Of course its PAL so would R3 be better since you dont have to rely on a PAL to NTSC conversion ?

I'll be in the UK over xmas visiting family so may have to pick up a few titles while there

Well, Region 2 is also japan and that often means a pricey $50 single DVD with no subtitles

I dont have any preference. I do like Region 3 Korea DVDs in general though since they're reasonably priced and usually come in real nice sets (Instead of a regular DVD you might get a 4-disc set with all kinds of fancy packaging, a soundtrack, a poster, postcards, etc..)

Other than that, I dont really care

No preference here. I just try to research and find the best version of every movie I buy. Most Hong Kong films available from Hong Kong Legends (R2 UK) are the best versions. Sometimes the UK also has widescreen versions that the US doesn't (The Sting, The Last Seduction). Also movies that are only available in certain regions (Le Samourai - R2 France). Then there are the premium box sets (usually R2 Japan) - so far I've got both Kill Bill volumes, Oldboy, and Hero.

The only Asian DVD of an American movie I've bought (other than the Kill Bill boxes) is Army of Darkness (R3 Hong Kong, MGM). There's quite a huge difference between the many US versions and this one. www.dvdbeaver.com is a great source for multiregion comparisons.

My #1 reason for going region free was: I bought my region free player, plus the UK versions of The Killer and Hard Boiled, and it still cost less than buying just the Criterion release of The Killer. dvdbeaver also has comparisons of these movies.

I bought a Daewood today and am now region free. I'm enjoying Ricky Gervais Live Animals and hope to be watching Spaced by the end of the week.

I just went region-free a few months ago because of Spaced and Shaun of the Dead, and then discovered the beauty of being able to get asian cinema before anyone else I know. Started with House of Flying Daggers, and while the video quality leaves a bit to be desired, the fact that I got it for the same price as two matinee tickets made it a no-brainer. I'm now trying to decide which Stephen Chow movies to get first. I then realized that this was just what I needed, as if R1 dvd's weren't an expensive enough hobby
