If a DVD has both a DTS 6.1 track and a Dolby Digital 5.1 track, which is better to listen to with a 5.1 system?

Does your 5.1 system support DTS? If so, use the DTS track, your receiver should matrix the rear center between the rear left and right.

I agree with PhYbEr, but you might even just want to listen to both formats on the particular DVD to find out if you like one or the other.

Just out of curiosity, what DVD has DTS 6.1 but only DD 5.1?

Lord of the Rings Extended Editions have both DTS 6.1 and DD 5.1

I believe Blade 2 has 6.1 DTS too, I think Gladiator is 5.1 though :)

LOTR has DD-EX 5.1, so the Center rear is still used

The answer is... it depends. :)

In general, DTS sounds better because of the lower compression. However, the big difference is how it's mastered. There are definitely disks out there with better DD tracks.

I just watched ROTK EE a few days ago on DTS. The sound is GREAT. :)

After finally setting up my DTS system, and watching X-Men 2 in DTS 6.1, DTS is MUCH better than DD 5.1...more BANG and BOOM for the buck

Some Gladiators were sold with DTS and some not. BB had both 5.1 and DTS (I am assuming DTS also has 5.1), with the DTS DVD's costing several dollars more.

IMO you should use the A.F.D. (auto format decode) option- or none of other sound "options" as they sound gimmicky and are basically just different delay/reverb levels. The plain 5.1 (or higher) soundtrack on the DVD usually sounds the best-and is how the director intended it to sound. If you don't have 5.1 or higher though, that might be your only option to create a surround environment.

As far as DD vs DTS, my experience has led me to prefer DTS, but YMMV. If you have the option of choosing either one, try listening to LOTR: FOTR in both and depending on your system, you can usually hear a distinct difference whereas the DTS IMO has a much more clean, tighter, and accurate sound to it. Especially the low end bass.

DTS is that much better? Is this true? If both DTS and DD are mastered well I was under the impression that the differences will only be slight, if at all.

In my experience, DTS almost always sounds better than or at least equal to the DD track. As a poster pointed out above, there are some occassions where this is not the case, but by rule of thumb, go with DTS over DD. But since the title you're referring to (ROTK) has both, just flip back and forth and see what you're happier with!

I'm a DTS whore! I freaking love it! Half the reason why I buy Superbits. It's so nice to see newer movies being released on DVD with DTS (Collateral, I, Robot).

Man you took the words, well typed the words right out of my head! I love DTS, and if it's on a dvd you can bet that's what i pick with out a second thought. Like the others posted, do an comparison for yourself too hear the difference.

Has anyone with a 7.1 system and a receiver with Pro Logic IIx compared DD 5.1 and DTS 6.1? I've always thought DTS sounded better, but after finishing my new HT about 1 month ago (with 7.1 and a IIx receiver), so far most of the movies I've watched have sounded better with the DD than the DTS. This includes ROTK and I, Robot. The DD track just sounded clearer and seemed to envelope the listening area more.
