I'm getting a new 32" TV for my parents' house. They've given me the go ahead to spend between 3 and 4 hundred dollars to replace a 32" GE that crapped out. Based on the dimensions of their entertainment cabinet, there are only two options available at Best Buy (for which I can use this weekend's preferred coupons.)
The first is the Philips 32PT5441. Linky (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1077624868411&skuId=6376511&productCategoryId=cat03002&type=product)
The second is the Toshiba 32A33. Linkified (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051806309527&skuId=5341454&productCategoryId=cat03002&type=product)
I can't seem to find any reviews for the Philips. But I've read almost all positive views on the Toshiba over at Amazon. Looking for the trusted feedback of some dvdtalkers. Thanks a bunch.

i see that Toshiba's usually offer the best PQ in sets around this size. JVC was good too. Sony's good but pricier.
i say go for the Tosh.

thanks. i got it today from bestbuy for $270. it's looking great to me and my parents are really pleased as well (esp. since i got it cheaper than i had thought).
if no one sees this in this thread then i'll start a new one. but i threw on the new matrix dvd just to check it out and the letterbox picture is slightly slanted. on the lefthand of the screen, from the bottom of the screen to the bottom of the widescreen image is roughly 4 inches. on the righthand side of the screen, the measurement is closer to 4.5 inches!
is this the tv... the dvd... or the dvd player? any suggestions?
thanks.

Does it do this on any other tv? You need another tv for comparison. Overall, I'd say it was the television. :(

i don't remember it doing it on the former television. but i'll try and hook it up to another one. even though i fear you're right, that's the last answer i want to hear since it's not fun dragging 120lbs. of tv goodness back and forth from best buy.

any suggestions?Find out how to get into the service menu, write down every setting in the service menu, and then adjust the geometry in the service menu.
If you can fix it - great! If you can't, restore all the settings to the original and return it for another one.

i got into the service menu and played around. was able to do some nifty things except for fix the problem.
looking at the unit even closer. it looks like the tube is actually seated unevenly.
should i exchange it for another? i've got the service plan where they come out and fix it. is this something that can even be fixed in home or would it have to go into a shop?
my only concern, again, is the idea of unhooking it, packing it back up, taking it back to the store, to then start over from step one. that sounds really unfun. so... is it worth it?

I guess you can get someone to try to repair it. If he can't maybe you can get him to arrange the swap so you don't have to do it.

well it looks like to get a tube seated properly requires bringing the tv into a repair shop. so i'm just gonna exchange the tv for a new one.
does anyone know how to dispose of an older barely working 32" television? can you just throw it away, or are there good places to sell it to? thanks.

If you it's barely working you probably want to throw it away. Now the way to throw it away is to see if Office Depot or CompUSA still have their recycling program in place. OD earlier this fall had a program where they'd accept PCs, TV, cell phones, etc and they would recycle them. That's how I ditched my very old PC and monitor. CompUSA had a similar program, but I believe they charged a nominal fee like $5 or $10. Probably other stores in your area have similar recycling programs.
