Sometimes Rightstuf.com will have the art boxes for sale. Also, the studio's website will sometimes have the box for sale(advfilms.com had the Noir box for sale a while back). The only problem is that they usually charge $10 plus shipping for the box. It's almost always cheaper to get the box with the first volume. I just ordered Gungrave Volume 1 with the box for $19.97 at DDD. This is only $5 more than just buying the disc.:)

Ok, I looked up contact information for Geneon to see if they have any boxes for sale, but they suggested contacting them via snail mail through Rightstuf.com.

I paid $14 for the first volume and really hate the idea of shelling out another $20 to buy it all over again, particuarly as I can't really get my money back by trading it in at a used DVD retailer. I don't know. Anyone have any thoughts?

Go for it. It's a wonderful series. Somewhat similar in mood and tempo to Boogiepop Phantom, but superior in every way. Unlike some series which benefit from spacing out your viewing, I think this is a series that benefits from compacting your viewing into as short a period of time as possible.

The difference in A/V quality is pretty staggering -- Gainax took terrible care of the masters that were used for the original DVDs. The Platinum set will also include the "Director's Cut" versions of the last few versions, whereas the current box set only has the TV cuts. Aside from the cleaned-up A/V and some tweaked translations, the extras in the Platinum set have been pretty underwhelming so far.

Normally, I'd say go for the Platinum edition hands-down just for the cleaned-up audio and video. But $40 is a lot less than what it will cost to get all 7 volumes of the Platinum edition once they're all released. So if you're not sure if you want to fork out all that cash quite yet, $40 for the original box set isn't a bad deal, especially since you can probably recoup most of that by selling it if you decide to "upgrade" to the Platinum version later.

There are commentaries, but they're done by the English cast and crew and (so far in the first three volumes) they almost exclusively discuss the localization process. The chances of getting a commentary from the original Japanese staff are slim to none, since so many of them basically washed their hands of Eva after End of Evangelion.

I think this was discussed in last month's thread, but be aware that the "director's cut" is not showin in OAR (original aspect ratio), so the screen is actually chopped off to make it seem widescreen. This was done with the director's full knowledge, which is why it's called a director's cut, but I'd stick with the originals myself... if I'm mistaken, I'm sure someone else will correct me.

Just came back from a best buy here in Orange, CA, and there were little yellow tabs in the anime sections saying that you get a five dollar gift certificate with purchase of any of the following titles:
Mezzo (TV series)
Peacemaker Kurogane
Chrono (Chrno) Crusade
New Fist of the North Star

They had the first volume of Mezzo (boxed and unboxed), the first two volumes of Peacemaker and Chrono (the first dvd coming boxed or unboxed). The boxed ones were 25 and some change, making it essentially 20 bucks, and the regular ones were 19.99, making them 15 dollars. Pretty good, though tax takes away some of the deal. This is separate from their Geneon 10 dollar deal, since I think these are all ADV titles (not sure about Fist). I think it's a national program since they were pre-printed tabs.

At that price, I grabbed the second DVD of Chrono Crusade, figuring that if it got decent reviews and I like it, I'll go back and buy the first DVD with box. Also considering Peacemaker, another Gonzo show (Mezzo, I think, is too risque, even if it's not as adult as the original OVA, and I don't think my wife would like it on my shelf). I'm open to any recommendations anyone has. I'm interested in Peacemaker mainly because I already bought the first volume of the manga and it makes zero sense, because it happens after the events of the anime (and previous, unpublished-in-English manga series)...

These stupid deals are making me buy more and more, and my backlog is filling up. I'm already committed to finishing up Azumanga (need the last two), Last Exile (need the last one), St. Seiya (long way to go),Aura Battler Dunbine, and Evangelion director's cut. I also just recieved the Witch Hunter Robin collection (with that insanely stupid box) and my 50 episode Zeta Gundam boxed set. I keep on telling myself I'll just finish up the series I'm already collecting, but it doesn't quite work that way, does it?

I would say pass. If you had not started to collect the Platinum version, then I would give the green light because $39.99 is an awesome price(I paid $79.99 at Amazon a few years ago). You won't be happy with the Perfect Collection since you know that the Platinum is much improved in the video department. Also, the Platinum version will include the Director's Cut as well as the original cut of the last couple of episodes. The Perfect Collection does not include the Director's Cut, so you'll have to buy an extra two DVDs to complete the experience if you buy the Perfect Collection.:)

Kind of a supernatural thriller rather than horror (i.e. I didn't think it was "scary" -- no boogeymen jumping out and yelling "boo") it does sort of follow the old familiar pretty, innocent girl with super-powers kind of story-line, but definitely in a dark way. I have not watched much, if any, other Go Nagai stuff, but the reviews seemed to think it was some of Nagai's best.

So now I'm roped into 3 new Geneon series (Gungrave, Stellvia, Paranoia Agent) and 3 new ADV series (Chrono Crusade, Peacemaker, DNAngel). This is a sickness, I tell you. So can anyone give any recommendations as to which of these six are most worthwhile? As I'm only a few disks into any of them, I can probably resist the temptation to fill the empty boxes for a while and focus on a couple of them...

I am learning to resist and wait for a boxset (course not having money helps too). I held off on most of the recent sales since a boxset is usually a better deal for the whole season/series.

Yeah, I know that's why they do it... and it works! I just have a compulsion to fill the box. And it's worse if the box is a limited item or somesuch nonsense.

I try to wait for boxsets or collections later too... but I'm a sucker for a good, solid box and great cover art, and that whole Witch Hunter Robin collection box left a bad taste in my mouth (I thought the book would be beautiful, but it's probably the worst DVD packaging I've ever seen). And although it makes little sense, it's easier for me to spend 15 dollars here or there for an individual release than to spend 100 bucks in one go, even if it is a cheaper alternative...

Back on topic: I know it's already posted in the Right Stuf deals, but I'm not sure if the circumstances have been mentioned: the Animeigo Macross sets on sale for 37.99 are a good deal considering Animeigo has lost the license to Macross and this might be your last chance to get it (at least until the whole Harmony Gold fiasco is settled). It's sub only, but worthwhile because of the excellent remastering (which I believe ADV used for their recent Robotech remastered set) and to see how Macross was supposed to be seen...

Same here. In fact, I've watched Rahxephon already, but I've still got Noir and Full Metal Panic in the original shrinkwrap. Oh well, I only paid $3 a disc for these (with the exception of Rahxephon the Motion Picture) and I'm satisfied with ADV's present product so I won't be upgrading.

I watched some of the Noir episodes on INHD. The DVD master is so good, the HD version isn't much better. Not worth a re-purchase anyways.

I'll just wait for the inevitable Blu-Ray/HD-DVD versions.

HGJ was running on MTV2 for a while, if you want to check it out (I no longer have that channel, so I have no idea if it's still on). It does have an old-school feel to it, and the animation looks great, but I think it is a longer series, if you're wary of that.

A new (I think) deal:
Best buy currently has Giant Robo v. 1 on sale for 9.99. Seems to be an unadvertised sale, but it's there on the website and even though my local BB had it labeled at 18.99, it rung up for 9.99. Good deal, and the two eps on it are longer than 30 minutes each, so don't be wary of episode count or anything. Between that, the 10 dollar Geneon deal and the 5 dollar GC Geneon deal, I've been buying a lot more from BB lately.

I'm digging it. I got Volume 1 with the box last spring during BB's $8.99 misprice:) and have since picked up the next three volumes. It is dark and gritty, but what do you expect from a series by Yoshitoshi Abe. If you like Lain or Boogiepop Phantom, then there is a strong chance that you'll like this show. It's definitely different, there isn't even any dialogue for the first twelve minutes of the first show(they call each show "Rogue").

In other news Walmart has the Saga of Goku, the first 13 episodes of Dragonball for $7.50 shipped. Unfortunately it's the edited non-subbed version. I don't think they did an unedited version of these early episodes. So the quality of this release is pretty poor. But good for Dragonball fans at that price.

Yeah, that's the "box" I was talking about. I'd heard the complaints, but I never bothered to look up pictures of it. I appreciate that they wanted to do something different with the box, but this is horrid. Those are CD cases, right? And I assume you don't get a copy of the volume 1 normal DVD case, even if you wanted to display it, right? I mean, the LE Stellvia v. 1 and the R.O.D. TV v. 1 didn't come with the normal DVD box, but at least those can be stored on a DVD shelf...

I've been waiting for Giant Robo on DVD for a long time too, but I was going to wait even longer for a properly boxed collection (after all, it was nothing compared to the wait for the last volume of the tapes). The 8.99 price suck(er)ed me in.

Pretty good, considering. After getting the 3,4,5 covers in a separate order, the only two I'm missing are 1 and 2 (I think I have two 3s and two 5s, though). I've been trying to buy the box with volume 1 with slipcover, and I've seen it a few times locally, but at retail... if anyone has a source, please let me know (of course, then it would drive me crazy that I don't have a volume 2!).
