I have to many. The main disadvantage is that 99% of them are in tubes.
Where to get them? Since I'm close to the studio, I get in house posters from the promotions department and I have a few different poster venders I trade extra's with from other studios.
seems like more movie talk material for this thread, if you ask me. Unless it comes with inserts.

I would like to begin purchasing some movie posters and have a quick question:
What is the "correct" size for movie posters. For example, The Shawshank Redemption poster I've found is 26 x 36? Is the same as what the original theatrical poster would have been?
Thanks.

Mummy

Puppet Master 5
Red Planet

Wolf
X-Men 2 (2 versions)
All the autographed ones I got in person at various conventions except for Wimbledon (e-bay.) The rest I've gotten from e-bay, collectable stores, movie rental stores and from friends.
I have the last two of the posters above (I love the poses of the actors on the posters and I like how they are placed along side all of the numerous accolades the wonderful film received.) I am going to be getting the rest (except for the "Kelly" one) soon, but I am trying to find reasonable prices. Reprints are fine with me. I got the last two for like $5 total off Ebay and they look great framed on my wall side by side.
I am sort of upset though, as Murray has a different pose on the first poster on the bottom, but the other Johansson poster with the accolades shows the same pose with LOST IN TRANSLATION at the top of the poster instead of the bottom (which is not pictured in the six)
--------
I love this poster and might get it one day:
http://www.allposters.com/IMAGES/153/425005.jpg
but I just have the one with full body shot of Bridges and Goodman (holding a gun) in front of bowling lanes.
--------
I also want this poster, but can't seem to find it anywhere for a reasonable price:
Since I don't have a lot of space in my room and I live at home (college student) I don't buy too many posters unless I find this for extremely great prices.
Damn, I can't do right today. had to edit five times!.

I believe most theatrical posters are 27 x 40 in.
If you buy any on ebay, be sure to get insurance or at least get the seller to ship the poster in 2 shipping tubes. I've received several posters that were damaged to hell by Fedex or USPS

US theatrical posters these days measure 27x40. Before the mid-80s they were 27x41 and usually folded. I'd stay clear of reprints, since they tend to have lower printing and paper quality than the originals that hung in theaters. ebay is a great place to find some amazing deals on originals. i have too many posters to list, but here are some of the gems. these are all theatrical originals:
Nightmare Before Christmas double sided
Evil Dead
Evil Dead II
Barry Lyndon
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
Jackie Brown advance 6 poster set
Spirited Away double sided
Night of the Living Dead
Se7en double sided
Terminator
Ghostbusters

I constantly rotate the posters I have up in my place, all framed & all original one-sheets. I will never put up a re-production, I've very picky w/ my posters.
There are only 2 posters that I have always kept up & have had them for years. my Big Trouble in Little China original Drew Struzan poster signed by Kurt Russel & Struzen & my The Last Dragon original one-sheet.
I'm lucky to have a friend who manages a movie theater so whenever he gets something good in he lets me know. My foreign posters I get from a dealer in the city.

Thanks
I have a friend that manages one of the biggest movie theaters in New Jersey, when I got home from work Sat night, it was rolled up on my bed, so he must of stopped in & dropped it off.
It's a great connection, but surprisingly I don't take a lot of the stuff he gives me, I hate having posters that everyone else has, it's so lame to have the same old posters that are everywhere. I like to have things tha are different, & most of the movies I love anyway other people don't.

Sessa17,
Can you tell me where you got the Korean poster of the House of Flying Daggers?
Is that through your friend at the movie theatre?
No it's an American movie theater, they would never get an overseas poster, I got it at a store I do to in NYC. But I'm sure you could find it on ebay, but you may have to pay a buttload for shipping through ebay.

I have a bunch-probably around 50. My favorite and most valuable is an original linen-backed one sheet of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (mine doesn't have these creases and is in A condition).
I also have original one sheets for some Harold Lloyd films, "Night of the Living Dead", "Dawn of the Dead", "Jaws", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and many others. In addition I have quite a few Inserts, Half Sheets, Window Cards, Lobby Cards, Press Books, 8X10 sets, etc.

I love Spider Baby! Mrs. Pusser even found she couldn't turn away from the eerie acting.

I have posters for the five Best Picture nominees for the academy awards for '01:
Moulin Rouge (with Ewan McGregor, not the one with Kidman, unfortunately)
Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring (has this picture on it: http://ia.imdb.com/media/imdb/01/I/19/35/60m.jpg )
In The Bedroom
A Beautiful Mind
Gosford Park
I was second or third place in a "pick the winners" contest for the Academy Awards, I won these and a couple of movie passes to the local theater. These are all rolled up and sitting in my office.

Not many. I am pretty selective about the posters I do buy, as I don't have much space to display them. But I do have:
Star Wars re-release poster with the banner on it for the coming attraction for REVENGE of the Jedi. Yes, it's original, not a reprint. I got it from the original Star Wars fan club, back in the day when they had Bantha Tracks as their newsletter.
Also framed is an original Lilo and Stitch poster, the one with Stitch and all the Disney characters looking in disgust at him. I got it from art.com.
And a couple others, I have Galaxy Quest and the platinum edition DVD poster for Snow White. I got those for free from Blockbuster.

I currently have around 50 or so. Almost all of them i get from my video store, which makes them kinda unique i guess because i haven't seen them for sale anywhere before.
I pretty much have a poster of every major rental release in the past year, and about 20 of the not so great movies that just have cool posters. The most recent pick ups have been:
Spider Man 2
Shrek 2
King Arthur
Collateral
2 seinfeld posters
Thunderbirds
Anchorman
Best part is i get them all free.

great posters man. where did you get the frames? i like your taste!
The first picture has 27x41 frames from Aaron Bros. (They have very little to the sides, the frames are kinda "slide the sides on" to hold the plastic front to the frame.
Next 4 pictures are all 27x40 frames from Aaron Bros. The Indy poster is original/folded but CUT! (At least he did a good job cutting the top 1" off it) I got it very cheap since it was cut ($15?)
The bottom 2 pictures are glass framed, I did the EPI frame myself, glass, etc...The Moulin Rouge is the only poster my wife would allow downstairs so she wanted it in nice frame. It ran about $170 but it is a thick ornate frame that goes nicely in our living room.

I now own my first real movie poster! I'd had some reproductions before that I'd just thrown up on the wall with sticky-tack, but a few days ago I bought a genuine, double-sided Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy poster.
After getting it in, I knew I couldn't just tack it up on the wall with the rest of the rabble, so I bought one of those $18 poster frames from Wal-Mart and framed it. I must say, I was impressed with the results, and I think I'm hooked now. Since hanging it, I've already ordered two more original posters.
A Boy and His Dog

The Road Warrior

Those two aren't even in yet, and I'm already thinking about ending my Post-Apocalyptic theme, and getting a Spaceballs poster, or maybe Dark Crystal. Or Return of the Living Dead Part 2. Or Batman Begins. Yep, I'm hooked.

And a bunch of Halle Berry's movie posters, but for fear of my life I won't post them here :)

I have lots of movie posters. Too many, really.
Hanging in my room now:
Memento
The Kid
The Game
Collateral
Black Hawk Down
Frailty
Snatch
Run Lola Run
The Crow: City of Angels
The Boondock Saints
The Crow
Equilibrium
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Fellowship of the Ring
The Matrix
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
Fight Club
Ocean's 11
These aren't all the standard 27 x 41 theatrical posters. Some are mini-posters, for instance. I keep these posters up not necessarily because they are my favorite movies (though many are), but because I like the art and the colors often fit with each other. The posters for Equilibrium, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Crow (Italian version), and The Boondock Saints, for example, are all blue-ish. I have a gold-ish tint wall (The Game, Memento, Black Hawk Down, Chaplin's The Kid), and so forth.

OK, I just bought two sweet (albeit expensive) posters that I need framed. I believe they're rather oddly shaped though, at approx. 47" high by 33" wide. I'm looking for a thick black wooden frame to go around them; matting isn't neccessary.
Now, what are my affordable options for framing? Is there an online store that will do the frame for me and leave me to get the glass? I thought that might be a more affordable route to take. Or what about making your own frame? Has anyone tried that?
Here's the posters I bought and how I hope they'll look once framed:

Where on earth did you get that? I absolutely love it. It is my 2nd fav. Bond film and fav. Bond female in Daniela Bianchi.
I just started collecting posters. I've had a couple for a few years and now am starting to collect (literally in the past month). I am aiming for original posters, not reprints, many Japanese, for cult films. Haven't started acquiring yet, but am on the lookout. The originals I have now are:

Over the last year or so, I have started to collect movie posters. I have managed to pick-up quite a few on eBay, I really need to start sorting them out however.
Here are some random ones that I have pictures saved to my computer already.
I get all of my posters free at sci fi conventions.
I currently have the following hanging up framed on my walls:
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Wizards
The Wizard of Speed and Time
I have the following waiting to be framed:
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Lawrence of Arabia (it was a present from my frame gallery friend)
I have a bunch of movies rolled up and waiting to be framed including:
Last SAmurai (beautiful poster)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Spiderman II

Silly question, do the original posters look any different from the reprints?
There is no single way to tell a reprint from an original every time, it is usually a case-by-case basis. The double-sided thing is often a good indicator, but posters have only been using that since the early nineties I believe. Size is often one way to tell as current original posters are mostly 27x40 and the reprints are smaller. A good site to check out is:
http://www.learnaboutmovieposters.com/

Also reprints don't have creases. Original one sheets are usually folded, not rolled, when they're shipped to theaters.
Not all originals are double-sided.

Right now, I have those up, a Amelie one(bought at some store), Lost in Translation with Scarlett Johansson(bought at allposters.com, Oldboy(bought at a comic-con), Lord of War, which I got for free as at the same comic con, and a Rushmore one-sheet I found at a store in Disney World for five bucks.

To go with my classic movie monster theme, I have large framed versions of Karl Freund's The Mummy and a German language reprint for James Whale's Frankenstein, as well as a couple of small framed Creature From The Black Lagoon b/w stills.
I've got a Wallace & Gromit Curse of the Wererabbit poster needing to get framed. At the moment, that's the only one I have. I used to have 20-30 different movie posters, but they disappeared when I moved out of my parents house.
I've also got a poster-sized puzzle framed of the original Batman movie. That's pretty cool.
Framed and displayed in bedroom. Conditions vary as they're all original:
The Hard Road (a 1970 film featuring Connie Nelson)
The Invincible Six (a 1970 action flick)
The Girl and the General (a 1967 Rod Steiger flick)
Matchless (1967, w/Donald Pleasance)
Pretty Poison (w/Anthony Perkins)
Custom matted, framed and displayed in dining room:

First off, Demonio, you have some awesome posters. I need to get my hands on one of the Monster Squad posters.
Now my question for everyone else...
I recently picked up a bus stop poster that measures 4 x 6 foot. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to display it with out damaging it. And would framing be feasible for something that large? If so, would that be a custom job, or does a company sell frames of that size. Any advice would be helpful.

Q, here are some of my framed chirashi. The frames are really inexpensive during Aaron Bros. sales. I got custom mats to fit the 7X11 chirashi to fit 11X14. (Question: What is the samurai one in the top right of the top batch? Also love your Six String Samurai one. Sweet!)
Silly question, do the original posters look any different from the reprints?
On most titles prior to the late '80s the original 1-sheets will measure 27" x 41". Also there will be a Screen Service number in the corner, the year followed by a number. Ex: 77/258. Also in the bottom border center it will say " Property of National Screen Service Corporation. Licensed for display only in connection with the exibition of this feature at your theater. Must be returned immediately thereafter". Exceptions are some low budget indie stuff and early borderless stuff from the 80s. Although probably 95% will be folded there is quite a bit of rolled stuff out there.
Is that Pussycat Go! Go! Go! a spoof of Russ Meyer's Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill! or just a spoof on the poster?

Thanks! I've a few Faster Pussycat chirashi. They pop up on eBay every now and then, usually as Russ Meyer retrospectives. About $4 a pop from Japan. Just got this one in the mail yesterday:
Yeah. Good eye! Picked that up as well. Gonna look great on my wall.
Anyway, all of the chirashi pictured (including Dolls and the Meyer one) came from this seller on eBay, my favorite: Tokyoites (http://stores.ebay.com/Tokyoites_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZQ2d1QQdptZ0QQftidZ2QQtZkm)

where can you find 27" x 40" frames and how much do they cost? the reason i have none hanging is because they're all in tubes and i don't want to put tacks in them.

You can find them at Wal-Mart, Target, etc. for anywhere from $10-25.
http://www.frameusa.com/ is probably the cheapest, but they are a wholesale seller, so you have to buy at least $100 worth of frames.

And specialty frame stores like Aaron Bros. carry them, too. More expensive (around $20), but bigger selection.

I framed two magic posters from the 1920's that are three-sheets AKA 41" wide by 81" high.
I used a basic black metal frame which you buy in sections (got it via mail) and then a thin piece of plexiglass. It was backed on a cut 4X8 sheet of foam core. It's pretty easy to do. Just check the thickness of the channel to make sure the glass, foam core and poster will fit inside.
The poster is mounted on linen.
I did two of these and it wasn't super costly since I did it myself and they look much nicer with a frame.
I'll try to take some pix later.

I've only a few, usually controversial posters interest me. I have the original pulled Full Metal Jacket (In Vietnam, the wind doesn't blow it sucks) poster and the original Lifeforce (painted nude woman) poster. As well as A Clockwork Orange and the Lost Boys.
I also have a poster from The Shining hanging over my desk. It's a black and white of Jack grinning at the bartender, but I couldn't find an image of it. Might be discontinued.

Thanks mate! I can't wait to frame them. Nothing like displaying these things appropriately.
Very impressed with your own collection and framing!! I'll check out Aaron Bros. site and see what I can dig up.
The samurai chirashi is of 'When the Last Sword is Drawn'. I noticed your email link doesn't work. If interested, send me one and I'll reply with a direct link. It's also a link to my favorite chirashi site. The owner is top knotch .. and has hooked me a up quite a few times. I can explain more ...
Anyway, good to see others out there collecting this stuff ...

Big Dave- That Deer Hunter is absolutely off the hook, where the hell did you get it from, been looking for it forever, and the few I have seen on Ebay the prices are just sodomy.
What poster is this? le 14 September?
Animal
I got it off eBay from a seller in Italy I believe. It is absolutely massive (I think 39x55). I forget how much I paid for it.
The le 14 Septembre poster is actually a French teaser for Leon (also know as The Professional). I have about 8-9 different styles of posters for that movie from around the world.
Here are a couple more random poster pictures I found.
Ok, that King Kong poster is way scarier than anything in the movie.
Cool posters btw, Big Dave.

Figured this would be the most unobtrusive place to ask this question. What becomes of the advertising in movie theaters (or bus stops, or places like Foot Locker, for that matter) after that film is no longer showing? Does the stuff get sent back to the distrubutors, sold, what?

depends on the theatre. the majority is either a) stored b) given away c) thrown away. you have to ask the theatre. if you get in good with a manager the majority of the time they'll give you old posters, and i can pretty much guarantee you could pay for them. make sure you look for the younger ones who'll probably need money more and be willing to give you more for your money if you do need to pay.

Sorry 'bout that. I went to work and could only find a couple of things on it. It's definately a homage to Meyer's Faster Pussycat. It was released at the Montreal Film Festival last summer. The only release I was able to dig up is a R2 Japanese Un-subbed version released by a studio by the name of Full Media.
Since it's a short, I wouldn't expect a subbed release for a while, but you never know. Then again, others more savvy than myself in these areas could have the Full Media release translated and subbed elsewhere.
Sorry, but that's about all I could dig up. Though, I do have one source in Japan that may be able to take this a little further. So, I'll get the move on ....
