Tobey Maguirre in Spider-Man 2?

Why did he suddenly become a crappy actor in Spider-man 2?

He was great in Pleasantville, Seabiscuit, Ice Storm etc but when it comes to Spiderman he just isn't there.

He seems so awkard and Kirsten Dunst does not help.

......

I thought this thread was going to ask why he potentially wasn't going to be in the film because of back problems.. but man, does this thread bring the suck.

i thought he was great, myself.
i thought he gave a much stronger performance in the second film than just about any other 'superhero' actor, including the much lauded Chris Reeve (and i've been a lifelong fan of the first Superman film).

his biggest strength is he's not afraid to look like a complete dork on camera.

I thought his burned out look in Spidey 2 as some Spidey sickness really gave him something to work with, stressed out superhero. Thought it was good casting myself.

Dude, you're 180 from me on this - I thought it was one of the best performances of the year.

can you elaborate on why he seems "awkward" or crappy?

Playing awkward and actually being awkward are two completely different things. You might want to learn the difference.

I'll take a slightly different approach and say that i'm not particularly fond of Tobey's acting. I never found him to be particularly moving or believable in emotional scenes and too awkward. But that said, i thought he's been just fine in the Spider-Man movies. Tobey's personality fits will for Peter Parker.

I don't agree with OP (actually haven;t seen 2 yet), but can provide a suggestion of why.. With the other movies you mention (Ice Storm, Pleasantville, etc) he can take the character he is playing and make it his own.. There are no real preconcieved notions of the mannerisms or attitudes of the character.. With Spiderman, this is a character that has been around for 50 (or so ) years. Everyone has an idea of how he and Peter Parker should act and look like. Tobey will not fully live up to the role of Spiderman for everyone, because no actor would be able to
