Current DVD releases that deserve a better treatment
I mentioned Rebel Without a Cause this week as a DVD that deserves a better treatment. Bladerunner was another one mentioned.
I'm going to toss in:
*Breakfast at Tiffany's
*Casino
*Apocalypse Now
*The Graduate
*The Searchers
and Chinatown
as a few of the many.

Lots of movies are floating around out there I'll be willing to double-dip for if rereleased with cleaned up prints and anamorphic. When DVD was in it's infancy alot of movies made their way onto the shelves that seem to have been given little if any special treatment. At the time I was just happy to have them on disc, but 5 years later seeing just how good DVD can look makes them look terrible by comparison. To me the only reason worth doubledipping is a vast improvement on titles not transferred to DVD worth a dime early on. I'm trying to make sure my list is one that has no rerelease on the horizon but if anyone knows of any of these getting a better treatment I'd appreciate the heads up
Outland
Doc Hollywood
Remo Williams- The Adventure Begins
Somewhere In Time (IMO the SE looks terrible)
This Is Spinal Tap

Moonstruck - not even widescreen
Quiz Show - terrible edge enhancement on an old non-anamorphic transfer; extras for this could be fascinating given the history of the quiz show scandals
Why Spinal Tap? I guess there's always room for improvement, but that film probably isn't going to look much better on DVD considering it was shot in 16mm. Sure, it would be nice if Criterion could license the extras to MGM, and the subtitles should be burned in instead of player-generated, but the DVD out now really isn't that bad.

Just about every DVD needs to be release with a higher Video Quality. It really makes a difference when the studios make a DVD from a HD Master source and the DVD has the highest bit rate possible.
When you watch "The Mask of Zorro: Superbit", "The Fifth Element: Superbit" or "Once Upon a Time in Mexico" you will see how great a DVD can look when done right.
You must have an HD TV to see how much of a difference it does make when the studios do the right thing a make the DVD Video Quality the best a DVD can handle.

In addition to the others (off the top of my head
Bonnie and Clyde
Dog Day Afternoon
All the President's Men
It seems that these are all recent enough that some pretty decent extras could be found.

Since it's the holidays, Home Alone. Watched it last night, terrible print with loads of scratches and marks, inconsistent flesh tones, non-anamorphic, dolby surround, etc etc.

Running on Empty needs a rerelease. Full frame, bad transfer.

I totally agree with the Breakfast at Tiffany's, Chinatown and Titanic mentions.
I'd like to add The Elephant Man(extras), Bringing Out the Dead(extras Scorsese commentary), Annie Hall(anamorphic), Dead Man Walking(anamorphic).
