From Mark Burnett, the King of Reality Television (Survivor, The Apprentice, The Contender) comes an epic reality show that will lead a worldwide search for the next rock and roll superstar who will become the lead singer for the world famous rock band, INXS.

Tentatively titled ROCK STAR, this reality show will go where no others have gone before. In the coming months, the contestant search will span 22 cities across 6 continents to find contestants for the show. Airing in the United States on CBS beginning in July of 2005, ROCK STAR will consist of 38 live and taped episodes for 27.5 hours of programming over a 13-week period.

Top contestants from around the world will be flown to Los Angeles where they will live together in a mansion in the Hollywood Hills and will sing each week in a live competition while some of the greatest names in rock music judge the performances. The ultimate winner will record an album with the band and depart for a worldwide INXS concert tour spanning over 100 cities.

Negotiations are currently underway with television broadcasters in each country to determine where the show will air locally. Stations who win rights to broadcast the television series may also have the opportunity to air the live concert during INXS's tour next summer.

INXS is undoubtedly one of the worlds most recognized bands. With more than 30 million records sold worldwide, countless awards from their peers, platinum certifications and name recognition that spans every country, the chance to join the one of Australia's most successful rock exports will be a dream come true for one talented individual.

Each country will be given the opportunity to present their best prospective rock stars when the contestant search comes to one of their major cities. Watch your local listings for details of when you will have the chance to participate in this once in a lifetime opportunity.

A local promoter and Television Network along with MARK BURNETT PRODUCTIONS and INXS are all supporting this contestant search and look forward to welcoming each country's best singers and performers!

Media update: 24 June 2004
Variety's entertainment section today announced the following information regarding the INXS ROCK STAR project:

Mark Burnett's got what CBS needs, and the Eye has landed the reality guru's TV search to find a lead singer for INXS.

Winner of the 13-week talent search - set to air in summer 2005 - will join the rock group, which scored several hits in the '80s and '90s. CBS picked up the untitled series after a brutal bidding war with ABC and NBC.

Alphabet web in particular made a big play for the show. But ultimately, Burnett and company were enticed by the synergistic opportunities at CBS, where the show could rely on Viacom sibs MTV, VH1 and Infinity Radio for cross-marketing efforts.

According to insiders, Burnett sealed a rich deal with the Eye similar in nature to the pact he and DreamWorks TV made with NBC for Sylvester Stallone boxing entry The Contender, including an ad sales component.

Originally titled ROCK STAR, the show will air two hours a week for 13 weeks next summer. CBS and producers are keeping mum on how they'll divide up those two hours - such as whether it will be spread over several days and how the show's performances and results segments will be spaced out.

CBS wouldn't comment on the license fee or advertising arrangement, but in the case of The Contender, Peacock paid north of $2 million an episode and gave up six 30-second spots to the producers.

But others point out that it's not quite a fair comparison, given that the rock project will air in the summer (vs. Contender's in-season berth), when viewer levels (and therefore, license fees) are lower. The rock show will also be produced differently, with a live component, which makes it tough to single out a per-episode pricetag.

Show marks a return to where it all began for Burnett, who has leaped to the top of the heap among television producers in the years since Survivor debuted on CBS.

"CBS is home to the Grammys, and its parent company, Viacom, has the industry's preeminent assets in radio and music-oriented cable channels," Burnett said. "I believe this exciting programming concept has boundless potential for success here."

The show will start out with a global talent search; Burnett plans to scout for lead singers in the U.S. and Canada, as well as Australia (from which INXS hails), the UK and Japan.

Finalists will live together in a Hollywood Hills home. Episodes will revolve around the relationships between the contestants as they cohabitate, as well as performance competitions.

Contestants will then be eliminated through a mix of viewer votes, judges and INXS members. The ultimate winner will record and go on tour with the band.

"This series will be complete with Mark Burnett's signature style of visiting a world that has great characters, interesting relationships and unscripted drama," said CBS Entertainment president Nancy Tellem. "It is also a program that fits with CBS' philosophy to target and nurture reality shows that have franchise potential that can play a meaningful long-term role on our schedule."

Burnett will exec produce, along with American Idol alum David Goffin and INXS business managers David Edwards and Michael Murchison. Conrad Riggs, who brokered the deals with INXS and CBS, will co-exec produce.

Media update: 14 June 2004

Mark Burnett Productions, creators of Survivor, The Apprentice and The Contender, announced today its next television series will feature the internationally acclaimed rock band INXS. The series will air on a major US television network next year.

Titled ROCK STAR, the program is a collaboration between Mark Burnett Productions and INXS Productions and will follow the famed Australian band on its journey to find a lead singer.

With worldwide auditions in five continents, ROCK STAR is one of the most ambitious unscripted drama series ever conceived.

INXS members - Andrew, Tim and Jon Farriss, Kirk Pengilly and Garry Beers - will work with leading entertainment industry specialists to assess contestants as they undertake a series of comprehensive workshops covering everything from songwriting and performance to image and production - all aspects of what it takes to be a ROCK STAR.

And the winner will become exactly that. He or she will record an album with INXS - the first since the death of frontman Michael Hutchence in November 1997 - and will embark on a world tour of major concert arenas. ROCK STAR is a real and legitimate opportunity for the winner to enter the international music arena as a member of an internationally recognized band and face all the glory, intrusion and demands that come with it.

One significant difference between ROCK STAR and other programs will be that the winner of the competition will not be entirely decided by the viewers.

Mark Burnett said from Los Angeles today: "I am a long-time fan of INXS and feel very fortunate that INXS approached us with this idea and have entrusted us with their future.

"I feel there's room on TV for more than one great music-based show, and I feel that rock music has been totally left out of that mix," he said. "ROCK STAR is the perfect aspirational show and is a great fit with the MBP brand."

During their 25-year career, INXS has sold more than 30 million albums, topped charts worldwide and earned a reputation as one of the best rock bands of the modern era.

"After Michael died, we wanted to search the world for a new singer but didn't know how we could effectively do that," INXS member Tim Farriss said. "By having Mark and everyone at MBP embrace the concept, we've now found a fantastic way to make that happen."

"Times have changed and television is now a valued medium to reach people all over the world. Mark's record speaks for itself - he is an amazing producer and we are confident that together we are going to create something very different and very special," Andrew Farriss said.

Mark Burnett Productions is the top unscripted drama production company in the world. Its television projects including Survivor and The Apprentice dominate US and worldwide ratings. ROCK STAR joins other Mark Burnett Productions shows currently in production including Survivor 9, The Casino, The Apprentice 2 and the highly anticipated series The Contender, starring Sylvester Stallone and Sugar Ray Leonard.

Rock Star has begun pre-production and will begin casting later this year. Supervising Producer will be David Goffin, who is returning to Mark Burnett Productions after three years as Supervising Producer of American Idol. Conrad Riggs, Mark Burnett's Producing Partner, made the deal with INXS Productions and will serve as co-Executive Producer.

Just insulting to Michael Hutchence's memory, I think. Not that INXS were the best band in the world, but they did have some catchy hits. Coasting on a dead guy's rep for a reality show is pretty crappy.

I loved INXS and think they had a lot of talent but without Michael I don't think they would have been anything special. This bid to be noticed again is disgusting I think. Really disappointed in them.

I beg to differ.... like it or not, the music world is a great deal about marketing/packaging. If INXS can get some publicity for themselves by opening up their auditions to the media then good luck to them.

I'm not sure what the net result will be in terms of sales but is not as if the other band members killed Hutchence and started dancing on his grave. It may sound harsh but I'm not convinced they owe him anything. And the fact is that he's been gone for years: if they now want to pick up the pieces I don't see why they shouldn't have a run at it.
