General question about Xbox Live and D/L content

I dusted off MechAssault last week and ran through it again (a little quicker this time than I remember it taking last time but that's neither here nor there). Anyway having gone through it again I started thinking about the D/L content from Xbox live but I was curious as to whether or not that is usually just something that is accessible/usable when on Live or are there "stand alone" functions as well. I mean the content D/Ls to the Xbox (more maps and mechs right?) but do you have to be participating in a group match or can you use these things as stand alone missions?

Does the same hold true for other Xbox live games? Is the content mainly something that is only usable when online? I'm not much of an online gamer myself but I was contemplating using one of the trial coupons I have around to snatch the downloadable stuff and then kill off the account.

Most sport rosters can be used offline.

I think some of the Mech Assult DL content requires you to pay for it....
