The problem with TiVo.... (Red Dog, you can play in this thread too!)

I was gonna make a clever title, about the "death" of TiVo, but I do tire of those threads in the tivocommunity forums...

How many times do you fall a little behind in your show watching (plus with commercial skipping) that you fail to realize that something like The Amazing Race started without you realizing it? Happens to me all the frickin' time.

Luckily in this case, it repeats.

But I did miss that tornado flick, thinking it was gonna start THIS Sunday.

I also sometimes regret not being able to participate in the "This commercial sucks" threads. And it took me forever to figure out what the fuck das was talking about when he kept posting about having to "PROTECT THIS HOUSE!!!!".

That's why I count on things like Entertainment Weekly and this forum to tell me when new and interesting stuff is coming up.

Can we get this thread renamed to "The problem with Y2K Falcon"? TiVo isn't your mommy. You've got Season Passes and Wish Lists to help with the future, but you still have to at least tell it what you want to watch (or turn on the Suggestions). The mind-reader model that wipes your butt for you doesn't come out until 3rd Quarter 2005.

The problem with Tivo is going to be the HDTV recorders are now being offered from Cable companies for just a monthly fee, once you go HDTV you don't want to go back...

The problem with recorders sold by cable companies is that they suck shit when compared to TiVos.

They do but if you've never been exposed to TIVO nor Replay (as only 2 million or so have), you wouldn't know that.

But not when you consider I can record HD w/o having to shell out $1000 for new equipment or use a service I do not care for. I can not wait for better software, Tivo should really think of partnering up with Scientific Atlanta to prevent their death, but for HD DVR free vs. $1000 and a service I prefer, does not suck shit.

I'd normally agree. But.....

I have Comcast for local HD only (makes my internet cheaper). Got a Motorola 6208 HD DVR - biggest piece of shit you could imagine- 8 hours total HD capacity, awful guide/interface, no time bar, FF through a commercial would cause it to stutter until you unplugged it, etc.

Just got the Motorola 6412 last week - dual tuners and a MUCH better guide, time bar on the bottom, no more stuttering. It is very similar to Tivo. The only drawbacks I've seen so far?

1. 10 hr HD capacity- I hope the firewire ports will allow additional external hard drives at some point in the future.

2. There is no auto-correct on the FF function like on Tivos.

That being said - even if I were to get a HD DirecTivo, I'm too far away from the antennaes to get OTA locals. Add to this the fact that at the HD DirecTivo's current price, it would take 16 years and 8 months for it the cable rental fee to equal it in cost. When the cable companies get a better box (which they will - they've already done it twice here in less than a year), it's a phone call away to get the newest & greatest.

Don't get me wrong - I love DirecTV and will not leave it, but for my HD needs (I can't believe I'm saying this), Comcast can't be beat right now, especially with the new 6412 box.
