xbox live question

This will sound pathetic probably but...

I bought Xbox live a few years ago when it was first released, as in, got it the very first day it was available. I've actually never even used it yet. Its still sealed in the package, version 1.0 or whatever. I think at the time it came with a free year. I'm assuming I can still use that if I wanted to sign up now, but just wanted to make sure? Will I get the free year still, or will I instantly go into monthly billing since I bought it so long ago?

XBOX isn't monthly. It's $50 a year. The purchase of the kit counts as your first year. You will have to enter a credit card number, but you won't get charged till that first year is up.

Theoretically the startup kits had expiration dates to activate by, but I'm not sure if those are enforced or not.
