Week 16 is over!
The Rules:
To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot (F12 key in MAME) with your score.
The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 9:00 PM Eastern US time.
When you post a high score, make sure to pick a new game to play by Monday. The sooner the better.
The game should be at least 10 years old and one we haven't played before.
Any scores you submit should be played during the week of the contest using no continues or any features of the emulator that you wouldn't get by playing the actual machine.
So far we have only been using MAME (http://www.mame.net/downports.html) to play the games, but that can change, if the winner so chooses.
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here. (http://dvdtalk.home.comcast.net)
New to MAME? Read the tutorials (http://www.mameworld.net/easyemu/)

Didn't get a chance to play last week's games this weekend due to a marathon Halo 2 session, but here was my first shot at EPROM:
http://img26.exs.cx/img26/888/eprom.png
This was a huge quarter guzzler in the arcade, and I'll be impressed if Lampei can beat it in one. :) I might have better luck at this game with the keyboard though, as ducking and shooting at the same time with a dualshock hasn't been working well for me...

You skipped out on Boxy Boy for Halo 2? -ohbfrank- You should be spending more time on losing your Cool New Member status -ptth-
The controls for Escape from the blah blah blah suck. If you want to play this game and don't have an analog joystick I suggest you get one. Sorry, I should've tested it sooner :( There's no console version, just computers. I'm afraid that would just make it more complicated.
Here's my first attempt with the keyboard, but I never really played this game before so maybe it's just me.
http://img92.exs.cx/img92/5552/epro0004.png
Here's my first try at Ghostbusters. I'll leave Mario for later since it's the only I've played before.

Well, I thought 4 guys huddled around a computer going "No, push that one!" would have gotten tiresome quickly... :)
Had I known devilshalo was going to bring back the memories of Ghostbusters that I had spent years trying to repress, maybe I would have pushed harder on Xevious. If I wanted to play a bad game based on a movie, I'd just fire up Krull... :)

But how about a bad games based on a bad(in someones eyes) band?
Journey anyone?
Or Aerosmith?

Journey has been played, Krull has not. I never heard of an Aerosmith video game, and they don't suck no matter how many times they've sold out.

Bah, it's a light gun game. It does work though and it's 10 years old, so it qualifies if someone chooses it. It's not as cool as Journey though :D

Interesting looking frontend for people with a MAME cabinet
"Version 2.0.2 of Kymaera is available for download. Kymaera is a multiple emulator frontend for Windows and DOS. The DOS version also supports 15khz arcade monitors. Kymaera (http://sourceforge.net/projects/kymaera/) is a fully skinnable universal frontend specifically designed for arcade cabinets. It supports video previews through AVI and MPG files, as well as a MameWah layout importer. Kymaera is a 3rd generation frontend and was designed to be a complete solution for an arcade cabinet. Kymaera supports both vertical & horizontal layouts and is completely user configurable."
I see you're now conserving on to your POW usage. ;)
And are we the only ones playing? Did Roto drop out to cower in the corner? :p
Real Ghostbusters is hard. Best thing I can recommend is that you not try to kill everything on screen. Better to move forward as fast as you can to get to the end boss. Don't use up your proton pack, just shoot them with your gun, then collect them along with the power ups once they turn to ghosts.

Almost there but I need to find out how to use all these bombs I'm collecting :hscratch:
Weird thing about that game, you get past level one and it apparently picks a random level next. I'm not sure though. I've only done it twice and it puts you in this bonus maze before the next level. Maybe it depends on what you do in the maze.

You have to push all 3 buttons at the same time to use the bombs, but they aren't as effective as I hoped.

As long as you take the same route you use for any other coin level, you're ok. I very rarely use the POW. I rather like using it as an island I can jump on to avoid critters.
Had I not tried to get that last fighterfly thinking I could beat the icicle falling on me, I would have made it to the next level.

I thought to bomb was just shoot + jump, but that never worked 100%, so maybe I would just sometimes catch the crouch button... :)
The level selection after the maze is dependent on which of the three doors you park yourself next to at the end of the maze.

I don't think I'll manage to compete in Mario. I'll probably go back to finishing around level 10 when I play again tomorrow. According to MAME, I've put 2 hours into Mario and only 1 into the Robot Monsters, which I've never played before.
Are me and hardcore the only ones with analog joysticks? If I win I'm going to choose Penguin-Kun Wars (http://klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=8990). I promise that it's keyboard friendly, and even though it's weird it's a very fun game  I remember that it was pretty popular when it first got emulated in MAME 0.34b3 (damn that must've been a long time ago!). I never heard of it before then. Download and play it anyway even if I don't win because who knows if I ever will again

Can I suggest Puyo Puyo 2 instead? It's similar and 10 years old.

Donkey Kong 3
Crystal Castle

Yeah, looks like you gotta wait a few months for Sailor Moon. I don't see an end to these threads any time soon, so be patient :)
It doesn't seem right to me that we would play Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong 3 before the first one, but I don't like Crystal Castle either, so I'm no help to you. You are putting me in the uncomfortable position of rooting for devilshalo :(

Puyo Puyo 1 is okay with me. I did pick retro games and nobody played them. Remember Asteroids, Tetris, Missile Command, Dig Dug, Q-bert, and Gauntlet. More people seemed to play the off the wall games like Tube-It, Chicken Shift and Boxy Boy. :)
Roto
11-20-04, 08:24 PM
plenty of people played them, they just weren't competetive because you can roll the score over on half those games :p I don't mind you picking puzzle games, I just thought Puyo Puyo 2 in particular would've been a ridiculous choice when nobody can even read what it says. It also would be the 3rd tetris style game we've played which I find can be seizure inducing. :whofart: Tetris counts towards puzzle games. Hell, you didn't even play Tetris, you played a bootleg called Puzzle. Need I bust out a screenshot?
Mario Bros. on the other hand was an excellent choice ;) I'm just afraid I can't quite reach level 15 and I'm sick of trying.
D300
11-20-04, 08:46 PM
I didn't even know Puyo Puyo 2 was in Japanese, I just picked it on Joe's recommendation. For some reason, I wrongly believed that only the bootleg version of Tetris was working, that's why I picked that game. Besides you and the CBS crew decided there was no foul in that selection. :) I guess I won't be picking one of my favorite Tetris like games soon - Block Out. That game might give you a seizure. :p
Roto
11-20-04, 08:52 PM
I agree, please don't pick Blockout anytime soon! I don't know about anybody else, but if we play Puyo Puyo, I would like a break from the falling block genre of games. Pace yourself or you won't know what to pick when you run out of Tetris variants.
