I am trying to run my xbox through my projector with a component to vga adapter. My projector will not recognize 480i, but will recognize the others. Please tell me there is a way to still use the xbox through my projector without going to an s-video setup.

I think the dashboard is only 480i which means you can't turn off 480i. If so, you should be able to get the steps for enabling 480p, 720p and 1080i "blind" (by pressing the appropriate buttons on the controller). After that, games would work but you wouldn't be able to see the dashboard.

That sounds fine to me. Would the steps be different for each game or would they be the same?

Any idea where one finds those steps?

If you have XBOX Live one of the automatic updates has already added the capability to display the dashboard in 480P. All you have to do is press both thumbsticks in and pull both triggers at the same time while you're in the dashboard.

crap. I haven't done xbox live yet. Sounds like I need to set that up, and then hook it up to the projector.

Is that right?

That's what I would do. I think trying to navigate the Live sign up process with the garbled display would be a major headache.

Well, I appear screwed. X-box can't locate a connection, and I have it directly into my dsl, have switched cables so that I know they work, etc. and it still can't find a connection. Any ideas, or maybe it just don't work. :(

you have a router?

mine would not work with a cross cable (same msg could not find connection) so I put in a standard net cable and it worked fine from my router that is always connected.

http://www.xbox.com/en-us/live/connect/default.htm

some links there on the right that may help...

cross cable? Now sure what you mean.

I do have a router, but even tried putting it directly into the dsl modem and had no luck.

However, I do see that my router is incompatible. How the hell is any Linksys router on that list? :grunt:

I don't see a list for incompatible modems, though. I can't imagine I managed a double whammy.

I thought with dsl you had to connect via windows (ie log on and off). Maybe xbox doesn't have the ability to do that? just to punch through an already connected router? dunno mate :(

meant crossover cable...

2. Take your Ethernet cable and connect one end to the Ethernet port on your modem and the other end to the Ethernet port on the back of the Xbox console. Most modems use a standard (straight-through) Ethernet cable, but some modems use a crossover Ethernet cable. Check the documentation that came with your modem for more information.

I think you guys are over-doing this one.

Just hook up your Xbox on your TV (480i).

Go into the options and set 480p, 720p, 1080i to enabled.

When you fire up a game (connected to your projector), it will display properly, so long as it's a 480p game. The games will default to 480p if capable. Luckily, the majority of games are 480p.

Perhaps you are right. I will try that. Thanks.

I thought he needed to go through the setup process of xbl first and that would be in 480i afaik so doing it blind would be near impossible.

though while you have it hooked up to the tv anyhow set up xbl from there updating it to the four button push deal toggling 480i and 480p.

Well, naturally my router is one of the few incompatible with Xbox live. I finally ordered a component video to s-video adapter. The projector has a deinterlacer through the s-video, so it should still look great.

Check some other sites about your router. Their list has always been small, while other routers will actually work with a bios upgrade.

I didn't have luck even when I went direct into the modem, though. Not sure why that was.
