Hey gang. After all the games I've bought this summer with all the deals, I'm debating on whether or not I should hold off on purchasing Metal Gear Solid 3 the first day. I have enjoyed the series, some more than others, but don't know if I should hold off a bit and maybe the price will drop somewhere.
Any thoughts on this? What are you guys doing?
Thanks,

I'm going to wait for a while...probably a long while. I have way too many games to play as it is. No need to pay full price for it, when it's just going to sit on my shelf unopened for months.

Buy it, beat it and sell it on Amazon or Ebay. That's what I always do. It's not like MGS games will take more than a month to finish. I play infrequently but can still finish stuff in that much time. Then sell on Amazon for $40. For me $10 out of pocket is worth it to play stuff when it first comes out.

Interesting thought, Franchise. I just don't like parting with my games (even the bad ones)...I guess I'm a collector.
Noonan, I guess you're in the same boat I am. I just have too many games to play right now. I still haven't even played the MGS Gamecube release yet, but plan to before I actually get to MGS3.
But the big question is, do you really think it will go down in price that quickly (I mean over a period of 3-5 months)?
Unless I can find a deal online somewhere, or something, I probably will wait. Though I don't know how long I'll be waiting.
Oh, and PixyJunket, I understand where you're coming from. After Sons of Liberty, I was just about ready to swear off the entire series. But I'm willing to give the series another go.
Thanks,

When I say I won't play it for a while, I'm talking more than 3-5 months. Let's see, before I could get to it I already have:
Halo 2
GTA:SA
Ace Combat 5
LOTR: Third Age
Shadow Hearts: Covenent
Soon I will also have:
FF I&II GBA
Kingdom Hearts GBA
And I'll have my import PSP
All of the above titles are games I would finish before I play MGS. I'm thinking I would get to it by next summer sometime. By then it will be cheaper.

If you've got a bunch of games already and you're not dying to play MGS3 on release day, then I would recommend holding off. People are probably going to want to sell/trade it away in droves about a month after it drops at a reduced cost.

I REALLY enjoyed the first two but I feel like both the PS1 and the PS2 games really opened the systems up to new possibilities. After playing the demo for this one, I feel like it's not as groundbreaking.....so I'm going to wait for the price to drop. I think it will be a fun game but not the same jump that the others made.

I will wait til I can pick it up for cheap. I have too many games to play or that I am currently playing to worry about having games day one. I would rather save money and catch up on some old releases. Of course I do already have Metroid Prime 2 and Prince of Persia 2 pre-ordered at gamerush, since they had such great deals on pre-orders a while back. I plan on playing MP2 this weekend.
Actually I just picked up MGS TS for the cube yesterday, and MGS 2 a while back during the TRU sale. Haven't played either yet, but I played MGS on the playstation a long time ago.

Metal Gear Solid has always aspired to be more than just an action adventure game. The series has pushed the envelope in terms of storytelling through the video game medium, and it's also concocted some downright postmodern plot twists that are about as thought-provoking as games get. Yet these types of things have come at the expense of pure gameplay, which sometimes takes a backseat to the story and to the high concept. All this continues to be true of Metal Gear Solid 3, which contains more than a few moments that are worth the price of admission all by themselves, and which offers a free-form gameplay experience that can be seen as either a polite formality or a sandbox in which you and your imagination can run wild. At any rate, times have changed since Metal Gear Solid's last major outing, which is why some of the game's imperfections are harder to swallow today than they were in years past. Nevertheless, this is still a great achievement, one that fans of the series will love and vividly remember long after most of 2004's other games are forgotten
That is why I love GameSpot's reviews. You can read the last paragraph and get all the information you need about the game. This is a definite purchase for me.

I have it. I have played it for over an hour and I'm still on the first mission. I mean I have an hour of actual game time. Of course there has been about 30 min of dialogue on your radio and for cut scenes. The dialogue on the radio is booooring. I just skip past most of it because I can read faster than the dialogue plays. Anyway. This game is hard. I even have it on easy and I still can't sneak past the guards that are holding Sokolov. The camo is a cool feature. You can change your camo and there is a meter that tells you how well you can or can not be seen depending on where you are. So far I like it. I just suck at it right now.
I have not ran into any skipping audio or video problems so far.

I'm getting it for sure. Reviews are really good and have got me psyched.
EDIT: I think I'll disagree with Penny Arcade's take on the game but it really made me laugh:
"First of all everything Tycho said about MGS 3 is right on the money. If you want to know what the game is like but you don’t want to buy it, here’s what you do. Go out into your backyard and lay down in the grass for fifteen hours. Every twenty minutes have a friend come out and step on your balls. That will give you a pretty good idea of what MGS 3 is like."

I would guess many will experience this as you are just getting used to the controls and what you can and cannot do early on.
I think you have to dismiss the impression that you are going to be able to/have to get by 'all' obstacles in stelth mode. There are going to be confrontations.
One tip I guess that can be offered is when sneaking up on someone from behind don't use the analog stick but use the d-pad.

Well, Ive had it since thursday and am having a ball. Currently I'm at the boss fight with The Fury. He's the first boss to give me any trouble since Ocelot (the first boss), though The End took me an hour and fifty-two minutes to defeat since he is so good at stealth. It took me ages to find him every time.
I have the skipping but it's nothing extreme. Not as bad as the GameFAQs folks made it seem. Basically, if you have a 3001 model PS2 (like me) or a PStwo, the game will have some skipping during the audio and video segments of the radio conversations.
Oh and the audio is to die for. I'm also glad they kicked up the gun sound and explosions in general (though I still wish they had just a tad more "muscle"). And the score is far better than what Greggson-Williams (and the in-game composer) did in Metal Gear Solid 2.
Oh and try using the option "I like MGS2" for a neat suprise. I tried "I like MGS1" for now and was gonna wait until I finished the whole game to try the other option but I couldn't wait.

Though CQC took me a while to get used to at first (I kept knocking everybody to the ground unintentionally), I hope it's carried over to the already announced MGS4 cos it was a great addition to the series.
And call me crazy but I prefer Naked Snake over Solid Snake even though their personalities are very similar. In fact, this game makes me dislike the conclusion of Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. I'm actually hoping Big Boss returns alive and well in the next Metal Gear Solid game (assuming it takes place after Sons of Liberty). Afterall, for all we know, even if the government had ever so much as considered to hand over the remains of Big Boss to the Sons of Big Boss, they probably would have been unable to do so cos they probably lied about having his remains at all. He may still be running around. At least I hope so even though a certain conversation with Para-Medic seems to hint against this theory/hope of mine.

I'm trying to decide what diffculty lvl to play it in.
I was able to finish MGS3 in normal mode. Except for a few boss fights, the diffculty was just about right for me.
Is MGS3 about the same lvl in terms of diffculty?
Is it much harder than MGS2?
RocShemp
11-22-04, 12:45 PM
MGS3 is more time consuming than MGS2 in the sense that you truly have to sneak around and you can't run and gun as often as you could in MGS2. I wouldn't say it's harder but rather that you must be more willing to sneak around patiently.
The Boss fights are mostly a breeze, though. Ocelot was the only one to ever kill me (several times) until I reached The Fury. But be prepared for a very long and patient sniper battle with The End. It took me almost two hours non-stop. On average it seemed to take reviewers a minimum of one hour to defeat him because he's almost perfect at concealment and sunlight replenishes his stamina and sometimes the forest will replenish almost all his health (he did this once to me during the fight).
The Pain is easy to figure out and The Fear is even easier to figure out if your a fan of Predator. ;)
So just play in normal mode and then try hard the next time around.

Hey, guys, glad to see other people on this board enjoying MGS3 as much as I have.
I beat this game saturday and I loved every minute of it. I got it on thurs. when it came out and had fri.- sat. off. Played almost non-stop. My end time was 25 hours. WHOA! (I did take some time off on fri. to catch the Pacers game ;) )
I have to say this is by far my favorite MGS game. I've played since MGS1 and am a huge fan. I played the NES MG when I was younger but I was too young to actually grasp the concept of sneaking and could never understand it. I've tried playing it recently through emulators but it's just not the same. I would REALLY like them to remake the originals, that would be freaking awesome.
I just hope Kojima-san gets off the drugs and stops talking about leaving the MGS series to someone else. He was born to direct this series. I don't know if you guys played Twin Snakes on GC, but I hated the direction of the cut-scenes. Solid Snake is a badass but he does not flip over doors and kick flip off of missiles... it's just not his style.
Anyhoo, here's hoping MGS4 doesn't take another 3 years to come out.

Actually, I think it's better to use the analog stick than the D pad for the sneaking in this game. The D pad feels kind of cluncky when it comes to effective sneaking.
And what I really like about this game is that it's not all that cut scene heavy. Yeah, at the beginning of the Virtuous Mission and Operation Snake Eater there's a somewhat hefty bit of exposition but, for the most part, big drawn out scenes like that are rare in this game. You actually spend a whole lot more time actually PLAYING than WATCHING this game.
And as far as the story is concerned, I'm glad that ham-fisted Kojima seems to have changed for the better. The only exception was the first conversation that Naked Snake had with The Boss. I felt she expressed way too much regarding her motives so early on. Fortunately, that was the only time I've found a character to be so overly verbose.
This isn't like Metal Gear Solid 2 where, although the story was interesting, you were five steps ahead of the characters and felt nauseated by them debating everything and trying to piece together a storyline you figured out halfway through the game or Metal Gear Solid's overuse of anti-nuke statements.
He's really kept things simple in delivery but not so simple that they're not interesting. (I wonder if the third screenwriter in this game had any bearing regarding this better approach to Kojima's stories.) I'm really looking forward to another game in the series once I'm done with Snake Eater. But I do hope it takes another three years since I'd rather they not rush a sequel.

The D-pad is used specifically for sneaking and the analog stick is not - that's why the guards will hear you if you walk around them using the stick.

SteelgearX Wow 25 hours! Quite a long MGS game. You could play Halo 2 twice in the time it takes to play through this MGS. ;) Impressive. Looking forward to starting today. Also please tell me the story is a little easier to follow (no spoilers please) than MGS2 (and I love bees! Can someone please explain what that was all about? Yep, 25 hours... I took my time, but this game was made for exploration. I actually gunned through some sections cause I kept getting caught. I got frustrated sometimes because I would sneak by two guards and some other guard I hadn't seen would sound the alarm.
As far as the story is concerned I consider it the best in the series so far. Intriguing, but not as convoluted as MGS2 (and I'm one of the few that actually liked MGS2). My wife watches me play, and she likes MGS about as much as I do. We both cried at the end of Snake Eater (she cried more than I did  )
Like someone else mentioned, the ending is very satisfactory.

Are you refering to the "stalking" function? Cos I've found absolutely no need to use it. In fact, in the 20+ hours I've been playing I've not so much as tried it.
Oh and the guards never hear me when I use the stick. I just press it gently and they never take notice of me unless they happened to see me.

Well I just finished playing and clocked in 26 hours and 26+ minutes (of which should be noted that 26+ minutes are from the ending since this game counts both the time you spend playing AND watching the cinemas as part of your total time spent on the game). The ending (and the whole story for that matter) was excellent - on par if not better than most films I've seen.
There are plenty of cinemas, kgrogers1979, but they're not like Sons of Liberty were your bombarded by a constant barrage of cinemas and Codec conversations that constantly interupt your actual time spent playing.
In fact, whenever I was greeted by a cinema in this game I was usually going "whoa, what the hell? How long has it been since the last one?" But, I warn you, the first five hours are the most story heavy. After that, the cinemas are brief and you rarely hear a radio conversation unless you prompt it yourself. The bulk of the cinemas is toward the end.
Oh and you'll adore the fight against the Shagohod. It's a most unique way of dealing with a giant mech in this series.

Yeah, you can still break some necks. Instead of pushing down the Circle button hard, just press it rapidly like you did with the Square button in the last few games while you're holding them. Neck snapping just isn't what it used to be now that you can slit throats, but if you're going for the "non-lethal" style, you can stop short of killing them and knock them out that way.

Then I took some old ruined food from my backpack and threw it on the ground and waited. He would come to it and pick it up and I'd shoot him. Then after he ate it, he got food poisoning and had to stop and barf it up, and I'd shoot him again. I went to the Glendale signing. I'm not a big fan of MGS but I love the characters design. There must have been at least 200- 250 people in line. They had to cut the line since they were only signing for an hour. We got there at 10:15 and we were one of the last ones to get their autographs. They stopped exactly signing at 12:00, no more no less. There must have been at least 100 more fans in the line, when they left. It was messed up for them not to stay an extra half hour or so for their fans (maybe they had a meeting to attend ??). I got a 27 x40 an "exclusive" MGS 3 poster signed, since the limit was one item per person. I'm thinking of framing it. Hideo and Yoji were signing like crazy, they didn't even look at us.

This is my first time playing MGS! You supposedly get extra tutorials an MGS veteran wouldn't require.
I like MGS! You play the game sans the extra tutorials.
I like MGS2! The opening cinemas are modified to conceal Naked Snake's face and he is wearing the Ivan Raidenovich Raikov mask and his name is listed as Jack when he removes the flight mask. The opening radio conversation features some extended dialog with Major Tom and is split into two parts with a new cinema in the middle featuring Naked Snake removing the Ivan Raidenovich Raikov mask, getting re-introduced as Snake and he then "enjoys" the jungle scenery in something that looks like a hair care commercial.
You have the mask in your face paint inventory regardless of which you pick. It was also rumoured that if you pick I like MGS2! you get a positive reaction from Major Tom when you first wear the mask. I don't know for certain though because I picked I like MGS! (incorrectly assuming I could later pick I like MGS2! with my saved clear file) but I do know that Major Tom said I had started to annoy him already when I disguised myself as Raikov and when Snake objected that looking like Raikov should make him more popular the Major said he didn't think so. I can only assume that perhaps the rumours are true and that this dialog is different if you pick I like MGS2! I should also point out that when I got discovered by Volgin and Snake fought The Boss for the third time, as she pulled of the mask she said "What is this fairy disguise? It's going to rub off on you and then you'll lose sight of who you really are." I'm assuming this is another nod to Raiden and the dialog would change if you played choosing I like MGS2! instead of I like MGS!

I chose I like MGS2, and got the same thing.
I just finished the game, and wow, what a rush. Best game I've played in awhile.

Possible Spoiler on The Sorrow:
If you don't kill anybody in the game, do you still walk by ghosts in the mangrove swamp, or is it just the bosses? I assume the bosses would still be there, because I didn't kill The Pain, and he was there.

How is the food system thing in this game? To me it sounds stupid that you have to eat. If I wanted to take time to eat in a video game, I would play some Sim game, not an action game. Also, I have heard you can get different injuries you have to treat like broken bones and whatnot. Is this actually fun or is it lame?

Anyone know if we're going to see an Xbox version? If so, when?

Finally finished this game last night around 5:00 a.m. It was awesome. I liked it a lot better than MGS2 (though I liked MGS2 also). The boss fights were very well designed, my favorite was the fight with The End. And the cinema's were awesome. The Boss is one of the coolest characters ever for the series. It was also a better mix of gameplay and cinema's this time, I'm guessing they took in a lot of the complaints they received about that. Actually there were a lot of nods in the game and "inside jokes" that were amusing and confirmed that they did in fact listen to their fans about certain aspects of the series.
but I nearly cried during the ending when I saw snake start breaking down, trying to hide his tears at The Boss's grave.
My only complaint is the cure system, It sucked having to go into the menu to cure every single time you get hit in certain boss fights. But that's about it.
Now it's about time they start moving the series forward, when's MGS4 coming out? :)
