Exactly. How can you rank the best DVDs if you haven't seen them yet? Sure puttin ROTK EE close to the top is a safe bet, but come on!
Good thing I hate Peter Travers anyway.

Rolling Stone has a long enough lead time to publication that Travers may have advance screeners of some of the titles in question.

Travers is such a whore. He'll say anything to get his name used on the front of a DVD case or a print ad.

He should have just left out ROTK, Star Wars, The Matrix, and Battle of Algiers and just made it "My Top 25 Movies that came out this year and will probably be really good on DVD".

also, travers mentioned the "bedroom" lesbian scene in "monster".

Pretty awful list. Did he just forget about Gone With The Wind? If I was making a Top DVD list of the year, I doubt I'd have any single-disc sets on there.

True
If any of you had actually read the article, you'd see that he talks a lot about the bonus features on each. He HAS seen them and obviously has the DVDs already.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he is unaware that a SE of Goodfellas was released this year, and that SE is also available as part of a boxed set of Martin Scorsese films.
I think he doesn't know about Schindler's List either.
Does he really think Dodgeball is better than any TV DVD, or did he just have a rule about limiting his top 25 list to movies only?

Even if he does have the screeners that still doesn't matter since the rest of the world has not had a chance to voice their opinion via purchases. Without knowing how well something sells, it is pretty much his personal opinion.
Anyway, that is my humble opinion....

but to give a serious reply, reviewing dvds is tough: how much weight do you put on the movie itself, and how much on the extras that come along with it? clearly travers' list has movies picked for each specific reason, and i would think that dvd talkers of all people would understand that.

in the magazine, they had a picture from the movie of Christina Ricci and Charlize Theron kissing. Either way, it still doesn't make much sense.

What a terribly ununique list, Seems to be little more than a Most Popular dvds for the last 3rd of the year, with a token Criterion title thrown into the mix to remind us the he's a "serious film-critic".
While I actually find it a bit refreshing that a film-critic doesn't go out of his way to create a list of "25 films that Joe Sixpack has never heard of", this list looks more like one of "Amazon's Hot Sellers" list, than someone's personal Top 25.

Gone With the Wind should have definitely been near the top of that list. I haven't been totally amazed by a DVD set in a long time, but GWTW had me awe-struck.

It just seems to reflect the overall attitude at Rolling Stone: promote the product that's supposed to sell alot. When's the last time you saw them peg a stinker of an album with 1 star?
Whether you dislike Michael Jackson, Avril Lavigne, Britney, Christina, or some non-descript rock group, if it's expected to sell multiple million copies, Rolling Stone does not fail it.
Similarly, there's no mistake that over 1/2 of the list hasn't been released yet. They are simply moving product and currying favor from the studios. Yech. It's erasons like that make me cancel my subscription.

I happen to think Peter Travers is either insane, just plain stupid, or both, but that's just me.
Also, isn't Rolling Stone to be about music? Please leave the movies to other terrible publications like Us Weekly

Actually I tend to enjoy Rolling Stone's movie reviews a lot more than most publications'. That said, their DVD reviews seem to be little more than a movie they liked which is now on DVD in a tiny paragraph rather than reviewing the DVD itself.

It's just one man's opinion, people.
That said, I can't believe some of these discs would be considered among the best DVDs of the year, let alone the best films.
And since most of these have either not been released yet or have been released in the last quarter of the year it looks like Travers has a short memory.

It always amazes me how people go apeshit over someone else's list. It's just his opinion folks. Not enough to get mad about.

Well, considering most of the problems seemed to center around shitty Toshiba and Samsung players, it doesn't really matter. It was probably the player's fault knowing what I know about those brands. I've owned two Toshibas and one Samsung, and all three were garbage. After that, I swore I'd never buy another DVD player from those manufacturers. So I bought a Denon, and not one single problem with my DVDs.
Then again, he may have been to busy actually enjoying the films. ;)
