Retro Game Challenge #15 (11/8-11/14)

Week 15 is over!
The Rules:
To enter, you just play one of the games and post a screenshot (F12 key in MAME) with your score.
The deadline to post your high scores will be Sunday 9:00 PM Eastern US time.
When you post a high score, make sure to pick a new game to play by Monday. The sooner the better.
The game should be at least 10 years old and one we haven't played before.
Any scores you submit should be played during the week of the contest using no continues or any features of the emulator that you wouldn't get by playing the actual machine.
So far we have only been using MAME to play the games, but that can change, if the winner so chooses.
I am going to host the current ROMs and list of all the past winners and high scores here.
New to MAME? Read the tutorials

The Games:
(click the titles for info and how to play)

Boxy Boy (US) - Winning Score: D300 2709640

Wardner (World) - Winning Score: Lampei 551510

Xevious (Atari Set 3) - Winning Score: devilshalo 166050

The Prize:
Whoever gets the high score for one of the games picks the next game that replaces it, so we should always have 3 to choose from. You also get your name engraved permanently etched onto this eye catching trophy with a genuine Sharpie!

This Week's Winners:

I'm guessing that if I can't beat the machine's default high score, it's not worth posting...

Not necessarily, especially if it's a game nobody has heard of like Boxy Boy.

Great picks guys. Between Moon Patrol and Xevious, I'm in heaven.

Here is my Xevious score. I wanted to post it before the big hitters showed up

I'm not sure I like this boxyboy game. It seems to me that it's more of a logic game than a video game. You could probably find walkthroughs on the web that would tell you have to solve each level. Anyway, there's a bunch of options of where to start. Should we assume everyone starts at Beginner level A?

This score is before i figured out you could PULL boxes as well as PUSH them!

How do you pull the boxes? I was able to find the backward button, and it kind of undo your previous moves.

I also sucked at that Wardner game.

You could probably find some sort of walkthroughs, but it would still be a major pain because there are levels that can take over 100 steps. I tried playing it last night and kept continuing until I got to one that I couldn't figure out. I'm curious how far D300 gets into this game since he's probably the only one here who's ever played it before.

I'll try again after work. I tried it once on lunch and I think I made it to 1000 points.

I'm not that good at Boxy Boy. It's one of those games I played by always adding credits. But by playing on only one credit, when I start a new game I always forget what I did before.

There is no "pull" button but it is a reverse of what you did. Starting over helps too, when you totally messed up.

Yeah, you can start the level over but the clock remains ticking. So if you think you are stuck decide quick otherwise you are wasting time.

I played it some last night and think that it has a high rage potential

I know what you mean, I like the challenge and playing it with endless credits makes it easier. But, there are times it is really frustrating and I begin hating the game.

As long as the game doesn't involve eggs or rainbows I think I'm okay....

Well.. did a bit better in Wardner. I got stuck at one point, and wasted all 3 of my lives.

I didn't even get that far and I beat your score

Oh, and I know one of the rules is to not use savestates, but Wardner takes so damn long to get going it had to be stopped! I use a savestate right before the actual game starts so I don't have to sit through those speeches in the beginning. When the dragon turns the princess into a crystal ball hit Shift-F7 and pick a letter. Then when you want to start a new game just hit F7 and the letter you saved it under.

I guess you can start at any level you want, because if you skip ahead you're missing out on the easy points. The point on starting on a higher level is so you can keep trying to figure it out.

I'm 1 past you now

I'm disappointed with my Xevious score.

Hopefully, I can get it to load at home.

Should we establish a "no pause" rule for this game, or is it just a free-for-all?

There shouldn't be any pausing allowed, otherwise you can think while the timer shoud be running. Also the "best steps" is where you get all the points, and you can beat the "best steps". I think it remembers the new "best steps" for the next time you play.

I revised rule number 5. That should clear it up for you

NO PAUSING!

Hey, I wasn't actually using the pause feature. I admit I put the full level selection time to good use though...

This level is trickier than it looks...
