Reasons why Red Dawn did not work
I just got through watching Red Dawn on tv and I have to say this was the worst movie. Here's why:
1. Our Military would not leave a bunch of High school kids to fight a war for us.
2. These kids had No Training at all so how could they be that good.
3. No part of this movie is even believable.
4. why didn't they just hide in the woods?

C'mon, this movie rules. Proof:
-C. Thomas Howell wears a "Star Wars" cap and becomes a (literally) cold-blooded killer
- Ron (Superfly) O'Neal is a convincing Russian/Cuban
-One of the Wolverines goes by the name of "Aardvark"
-Lea Thompson fires a mean machine-gun
-Harry Dean Stanton freaks me out ("AVENNNNNGE MEEE!")

I remember when this first came out, spokesman for the USSR told the press that this movie didn't help tensions between the US and the Soviet Union.

Wasn't this the first movie to get a PG-13 rating? I remember back then PG-13 really pushed the limit in terms of violence and PG films still had an edge to them.
In terms of the movie itself, it's a guilty pleasure. Plus, it was directed by John Milius, an admitted far right conservative to the best of my knowledge, and the same guy who made Conan the Barbarian.

Red Dawn was the first motion picture released with the PG-13 rating, which had been created after difficulty rating some movies in 1984, most notably Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984). (Flamingo Kid, The (1984) was the first film to be *given* a PG-13 rating, but sat on the shelves for five months before being released.)

Given the fact that most of the kids had been taught to fire a rifle and hunt as well as knowing and defending their own turf, it's more believable than Ghostbusters.

I don't think the film works because the ending just... happens. It's abrupt and doesn't really conclude the story. Also, the idea of an impending Russian invasion isn't such an overhanging threat today, and I think the film depended a bit too much on the detente to create tension.
Also; Patrick Swayze as a high school boy.
In many respects, it does work. I wouldn't be surprised if that's roundabouts the way soviets would have orchestrated an attack on the US.
Note, while checking IMDb, I got this lovely summary from "The Net Warrior"...

This film is one of the basis of the beliefs of the citizens militias and patriot groups about the possiblity of a U.N. takeover of the U.S. The movie and the theory of the New World Order proposed by the militias are similar, invasion by a foreign force, a big gun grab, arrest of gun owners, military equipment being moved on railroads, enemy helicopters re-education facilities (concentration camps), and a citizen force that strikes back.

This movie has and will remain one of my most favorite movies of all time! It got me to like Michigan football and the character "Wolverine" along with the other X-Men.
