what a difference how a few million dollars can influence a man. The guy was a stud and now looks decrepid. But hey I would lose my physique for bank too. Plus, obviously this is temporary. He gets to start anew with no fat whatsoever when he starts lifting again.

Is that visual effects or is did he really get that skinny?

he really lost that much weight, he also only slept for a few hours a night to get the feeling of being run down and without sleep. he said there were times when he wouldn't get up to do anything so he could save energy
it's easier to turn fat/mass into muscle than to create it from nothing

That's his old new look. He has since returned to normal weight and bulked up to play Batman.

I've seen some recent video of him and he's already back to his normal weight again. Damn scary, I think when I watch The Machinist, the only thing I'll be thinking through the whole thing is 'cripes! that can't have been healthy for Bale to do just for a movie'

Just think, he lost close to 70lbs for The Machinist, then had to bulk up for Batman Begins.
I remember Vincent D'Onofrio doing the opposite. Gaining 70lbs for Full Metal Jacket and trimming down for Adventures in Babysitting.

Bale's physicallity is the sole reason i'm curious to watch The Machinist. Considering he was already quite a buff fellow in American Psycho and Equilibrium, i can't imagine shedding all that size and building it up again for Batman.

He jumped up 60lbs in no time, but did it via binge eating and apparently got really.. really sick from doing it.
Loved it, but got sick. (and gave him a bit of a gut)

In an interview, he said the he actually had to bulk up quite a bit for American Psycho, and that was not his typical physique.
He said he still felt weak after the weight loss from Mchinist while filming Batman, but the suit helped him out with his apperance.

Any actor that goes though that much suffering for their craft, has my respect.

Word is to make weight Bale subsisted on one apple and one can of tuna fish per day.

I've always been impressed by Ed Norton's loss of muscle between American History X and Fight Club. Of course, that wasn't as drastic as Bale's.

He's almost as skinny and sickly looking as Scott Weiland. Almost.
