This DVD is only in FF, and I'd so love to see it in widescreen...and with some extras. Do you think it will ever happen?

Myster X

I hope there will be a boxed-set after Seed of Chucky comes out. Then again, I don't think a single studio owns the right to all the films.

Cornelius1047
10-25-04, 02:30 AM
MGM owns the first, and Universal the next 3. I would've thought the best chance of a Special Edition would be when Seed Of Chucky came out, but that's in a couple weeks with not even a hint of a rumor.

Its widescreen in Region 4, but may be hard to get - I haven't bothered to look for a copy to buy yet though. Most video stores here have it though.

I also thought MGM would have timed this to the theatrical release of SEED, but maybe they're going to do something to coincide with the VIDEO release (especially if SEED makes some BANK)... I hope so anyhow.

This was my question too.

I'm even seeing full page ads for the original "Child's Play" DVD in recent Halloween themed issues of magazines - none of which indicate that the DVD is only available in "pan-n-scan."

I would have bought the "Chucky" boxset by now, if I could get the original film in widescreen.

In my Dawn Of The Dead DVD there was a Child's Play Box Set ad.

Don't know if it is just boxing up what was previously released or what ... but the ad was there.

I have the R4 Childs Play and I have seen better picture quality.Whats the rumor about the Childs Play movie was lost in a fire and so there isn't a wide screen print available in R1?

petroc
10-27-04, 09:18 PM
Yeah I heard that rumor also, but if there are widescreen copies available overseas...I don't know why we can't get one here in the U.S.A.

Also as has been stated before, MGM owns the first Child's Play movie. Universal bought the series and owns #2, #3, Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky.

The Monkees

It seems if MGM was smart they would have made a special edition of this NOW and cash in on all the promotion for Seed of Chucky, if I ran MGM, that's what I would have done!

This is one of the very last horror titles I want that I've held off on in hopes of a better future release (along with Shivers and Phantasm II & III). I sure hope it happens, this is just way to cool a movie to be left languishing in foolscreen hell.

A smart-ass commentary by Brad Dourif himself would motivate a Childs Play buy in a heartbeat. In fact, a Chucky/Andy track would be even better....

good idea about the Chucky/Andy commentary. Brad made a few funny jokes in the BOC commentary so it'd be nice to see him do more commentaries. He's so low-profile, should do some late night talk show interviews once in awhile!

I asked Alex Vincent at Fear Fest in March and he told me that the bonus features were wrapping up and the disc should be coming out this year. I'm guessing Oct. based on reports I've read, and the timing of the horror holiday.

^ Man, you guys and your BR discs. I like Hi-Def as much as the next guy, but I don't need/want my 80's horror looking like it was made yesterday. That's a part of it's charm. A pristine anamorphic transfer is just fine for films like this. I don't need to see the wires manipulating Chucky, or the seams in Pumpkinhead's suit, in crystal clear HD. Just my 2 cents.

I don't want ALL my movies in HD, but I do look for my favorite movies like almost all of the 80s horror movies. I love horror movies and I am very excited to see that I Know What You Did Last Summer, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend & The Exorcism of Emily Rose are all coming to BD this summer. I know those aren't 80s horror movies, but still some of my favorite horror movies. I would love to have Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street & Child's Play on BD. I understand where you are coming from and agree somewhat, I wouldn't want The House on Sorority Row or Silent Night, Deadly Night on BD.

Considering the picture resolution of a Blu-Ray disc is still less than what you'd get theatrically I don't think it's being ridiculous to want to see the movies we love more clearly. Watch the Blu Ray version of THE SHINING and tell me it loses it's charm. Also, I don't believe Chucky was operated with wires, but mechanically and through the floor. ;)

Chucky fans should rejoice, earlier this week we spoke with writer Don Mancini about the upcoming 20th Anniversary Edition of CHILD'S PLAY on DVD… and yes, it's completely loaded! He told us that DVD, which arrives at retailers on September 9, is loaded with extra features thanks to Producer Michelle Gold. Still no word yet on of we'll get a Blu-ray edition. Here are some details: - Commentary track with creator/writer Don Mancini and producer David Kirschner. - A second track with FX guru Kevin Yagher, Catherine Hicks (Kevin's wife; they met on the film), and now-grown-up Alex Vincent. - A third track with Mancini and Chucky (Brad Dourif voicing in character). - The film itself is presented in the long overdue 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen. - Making-of documentary blending archival footage with new, on-camera interviews with Mancini, Kirschner, Yagher, Hicks, Vincent, Chris Sarandon, and Brad Dourif. The strange absence of director Tom Holland is very unfortunate. I hope they get a chance to add a commentary track from him as well. We heard through the grapevine that he is excited to be a part of this disc, and had not yet been asked (Michelle Gold… can you make this happen?). Watch for an official announcement soon.

That doesn't really mean anything. I've seen places carry re-releases or even be in the ad. Pet Semetary comes to mind, Best Buy had that when it was re-released. It's a horror movie coming out in September just in time for Halloween, it wouldn't surprise me if Best Buy had it when it comes out. Maybe even a buy this with Pumpkinhead get some money off or something.

One of the reasons FOR all of these re-releases is to get stores to re-stock them. Stores like Wal-Mart are more than likely to stock a new SKU than an old one, studios re-issue DVDs under a new SKU, then they get put back on the shelves in the form of a new edition.

I would also enjoy a Child's Play 2 SE, IMO the best in the series. Unlike the first one (in my opinion) the technology didn't hamper the movie, it was funny and creepy, and it was fun. The third was dreary, the fourth was predictable and the fifth was all over the map.

couldn't find it at my Wal-Mart or K-Mart so I just said the hell with it and bought it online at CD Universe. I am not traveling a long way to Target or Best Buy just for them not to have it either..lol

I was going to go get mine today at Best Buy, but a lot of the streets in my area (Chicago suburbs) are flooded so maybe I'll make the trek tomorrow.

Ever call a retail store to find out later in the day since you were heading there anyway that they lied to you, or were too incompetent to find what you wanted?

Watched all the bonus materials (with the exception of the 2 full length commentaries) last night and really enjoyed most of it...just wish there was a bit more...and what's with no Tom Holland circa now? (just before posting I did a search and found this interesting article...seems they didn't even ASK Holland to be a part of the DVD...I guess there is some bad blood with Kirshner/Mancini and him or something... http://thehollywoodinterview.blogspot.com/2008/09/tom-holland-hollywood-interview.html ) Otherwise very decent extras and it's great to have this one in widescreen finally.

Hey, if you don't mind me asking about where in the Chicago suburbs do you live? I live in the Chicago suburbs also. Do you go to the Weekend of Horrors in February?

I'm in Schaumburg. I didn't make it to the Weekend of Horrors... hopefully next year. I did go to Flashback Weekend though.

Boring Old Question: is the original R1 Child's Play DVD pan&scan or open-matte?

I was at Flashback too, the first time I've ever gone. Their vendors are so much better than WoH.

Can anybody confirm if the trailer is on the new edition?

I noticed that the box doesn't have it listed and in a previous post, it says "Trailer (texted)" Not sure what the "texted" part means. just want to make sure before I sell off my full screen version.

Bride did have a decent number of extras, but a few more along with a blu-ray release would be on point! CP2 special edition on blu ray would be awesome too.

ever heard of a telephone?

Calling does NO good at all! They either lie or they are just too lazy to go and look so that does no good. And plus what I meant was that even if they did have it I am not traveling all the way when I can just order it online and it be quicker and save on gas.

I have to say watching this on the new DVD, is the most I've enjoyed this movie since my early viewings. This is a solid horror flick. Probably the best of the series. Bride of Chucky is probably my second favorite.

This new dis is great. I watched the film and all the bonus features, sans commentaries, and it was very well done. I did find it a little lame that some footage was re-used throughout the extras, but overall it was good, informative material. The new 16:9 transfer looked great.

Awesome!!!

Sullivan is also planning for several more of these as part of his new ICONS exclusive on-going column SHOCK N ROLL. (Check out the first issue HERE!) His second issue debuting later this week will feature a lengthy interview with Tom Holland, and include 2 new FRIGHT NIGHT commentaries.
