Yeah, that The Grudge number is really... really surprising.
I didn't really see that much advertising for it to be honest... and didn't really see that much buzz for it.

That is pretty impressive for the Grudge. It only cost about $20 million to make, right?

Fantastic news for SMG and The Grudge (just saw it today). I tried to see it last night at the 9:40pm showing near me. When I went to get tickets at 8:30pm, it was sold out, so I was thinking it would do decent numbers.
My prediction (to my wife) for this film was $30-$35 million opening. It should clear this by a bit, though if my HSX days serve me well, I remember that horror films usually underperform on Sundays.

I'm surprised that Surviving Christmas is doing so well. With all the bad reviews it was getting I figured it would do little to no business. Ah well, looks like Affleck and Lopez have overcome the Gigli curse.

Surving Christmas looks like it's gonna have some amazing legs. By next weekend, word of mouth will have spread like wildfire.
Advance word on the film has been beyond phenomenal. 4-5 million for this type of film (low budget, no name cast) is amazing. I applaud Dreamworks and the producers for going with such a high-concept idea for a plot. Pretty risky, in this day and age. No one else dared to try it, that's for sure.

Most of the film takes place in a single house, there's little CG - the director isn't making a boat load, remake rights weren't over expensive, and nobody on the cast is likely making a 7 figure salary off it (even Gellar admitted to having to 'fight' for the role). So for $10m they had to fly some americans to japan, house them, put the bill, and make a haunted house movie. Considering how low budget the original Ju-on's were, and how low budget the Japanese director's are used to working with (the CG-orgy known as Casshern cost a whopping $6m), it doesn't sound low at all.
On the other hand, The Ring I know cost $40m to make - but to it's credit, had a cheesy "speeding through traffic" sequence, and took place across multiple locales. (House, boat, exteriors, barns, etc; )
And that all said, I guess it's weak my main source of this was...
---
The movie, which was made for about $10 million, includes a scene in which a hand appears in Karen’s hair when she is taking a shower. The sequence, which used the hand of a real actress, took seven hours to shoot, though Gellar might have been the least embarrassed person there.
“Me and 17 Japanese men in a shower,” Gellar says. “And Japanese people are kind of bashful ... these poor guys, they could not have wanted the scene to end faster. And it was some ice-cold water.”
As the filming went on, Gellar started having an allergic reaction.
“I was getting this rash on my legs,” she says. “So here’s a visual for you: They brought out garbage bags and made pants for me out of garbage bags. So now here I am, in the shower with Hefty pants. It’s attractive.”
---
Yaaah! .... hammer time.

I figure the actual for The Grudge will be $38m, but wow... just... wow @ that amount. Pretty damn strong for any film, especially one with a tiny $10m budget, and a great start for Sam Raimi's new company.
