dvd hdmi better than component?

Just bought a widescreen hdtv and need to upgrade my dvd player to 'progressive scan'.

Is progressive scan using hdmi out any better than using component out?

Using your typical greater than scaling method:

HDMI > DVI > Component > SVideo > Composite

Short answer. Yes.

But if the source is progressive scan dvd would one be able to tell the difference between HDMI and component?

I guess a better question is if it's worth buying a progressive scan dvd player with hdmi vs. one with compontent out.

There is confusion of terms here.

I do not believe there is any benefit to having a dvd player with dvi/hdmi out unless it has upconversion. Even then the limit of a dvd is 480p and would likely not look much better than component.

if you have a fixed pixel display (LCD, DLP, plasma) you're probably better off with a dvd player that ouputs via hdmi/dvi. if you have a crt based set, the difference in picture quality between hdmi(or dvi) and component might not be worth the extra $$ you may have to spend to get hdmi/dvi from the player.
when you shop for your player, make sure you ask to see the dvd player on the display type you are using at home with the correct connections (hdmi, dvi, or component).

I'll check it out.

I assume a dvd player that upconverts to 1080i would be noticably defferent?

Probably not much different. We've discussed this here before. You can try doing a search on "upconvert" or "1080i".

One significant improvement even without upconversion is the ability for DVI/HDMI to transmit pure digital signal (components are analog).

I agree.

However I do not believe that the average person with the average equipment will be able to see a difference.

^^^^^

And a CRT based HDTV is analog so a conversion is needed anyway at least in that instance.

Pretty much any recent HDTV-compatible crt-set/projector will process the picture digitally, so if a DVI/HDMI input is properly implemented it will avoid a DA>AD-convertion.

But the CRTs themselves are analog so the digital chain is broken during the conversion to the display. Yes the TV will process the signal in the digital realm but the signal will not stay as a pure digital signal from source to display without any conversion.
