The Iron & Wine version (on the Garden State OST) is a B-Side to the Postal Service single for "Such Great Heights." I actually quite prefer the I&W version to the PS version.

The Shins have a cover of PS's "We Will Become Silhouettes" also on the same single.

For those two songs, the single is quite worth the $4 or less!

Aphex Twin's list is pretty great. Also you might want to snag some Mars Volta, they are great, and The Microphones (the Glow pt 2 I think you would dig if you like the Shins), Interpol, and Archers of Loaf (particularly Icky Mettle).

EDIT: Also, the Vanilla Sky soundtrack is something you might want to check out, as well as anything by Sigur Ros, if you want something ethereal (Untitled is my favorite album from them).

I know it's been a while, but thanks a lot for all of these recommendations everyone. I've checked out most everything in this thread, and the majority of it was just what I was looking for.

Much like my thread in the DVD Review folder though, I'm still looking for more recommendations. If any of you guys have anything else to list, then go right ahead.

I recently got into stuff like The Killers, The Ordinary Boys, and Death Cab For Cutie as well.

as far as soundtracks go: High Fidelity is a good one.

as far as artists, definitely give Arcade Fire's Funeral a try. it may take a while to grow on you, but when it does... it won't leave your player or your head for weeks.

ditto Interpol's Antic and/or Turn on the Bright Lights

ditto ditto Sigur Ros' ( ) and/or Agaetis Byrjun (i can't really spell that one without some work since it has non-English characters...)

you'll probably also like Death Cab for Cutie. there most recent, Plans, is quite good and their back catalogue is also good.

Modest Mouse is always a good choice as well, but they're not as accessible as the groups i've just mentioned. their most commercial (and commercially successful, at that) album is also their most recent Good News for People Who Like Bad News.

these are just broad strokes for you - in other words, these are the "indie" groups many people are getting into at the moment. all the other groups already mentioned are great. hopefully, if you start with these, they'll entice you to dig deeper into indie music. there's a LOT LOT LOT LOT of good stuff out there that doesn't get as much airplay as groups like Nickelback or artists like John Mayer.

oh, and as a personal preference, an artist who i've been plugging on these boards since i first joined is Mason Jennings.

edited to add: oops, i obviously didn't read the thread precisely. Interpol and Sigur Ros have been mentioned. you already know about Death Cab...

but you said you liked The Killers... if you haven't heard Franz Ferdinand, do it. despite the deafening hype (which has thankfully died a bit with their last album), they're definitely worth checking out.

a lot of bands coming round now also cite Gang of Four as a big influence. check out their Entertainment! album to start with.

oh, and i recently discovered Big Star. there was a recent reissue of (ostensibly) their two best albums on a single disc: #1 Record/Radio City. i really dig their sound. (and as long as i'm talking old school, i might as well recommend The Troggs while i'm at it.)
