I like the taglines for these threads.
So we know that no team in baseball has ever come back from 0-3 to win a series. Has any team ever been down 0-3 and gotten to a Game 7 (only to lose)? I don't recall it ever happening. I can't even remember a time where a team down 0-3 rallied to win the next 2. I'm guessing that has happened though.
huh?
10-19-04, 11:07 AM
I heard something about this on the radio this morning.
Only two times has a team that's been down 0-3 come back to force a game six.
In 1998, the Braves against the Padres, and in 1999 the Mets against Braves.
In both cases, the team that was down 0-3 lost game 6, so no one has ever forced a game 7 from down 0-3.

Thanks for the knowledge. Yeah - I knew that 0-3 to 2-3 had to be rare; didn't realize it happened so recently though.

The Mets actually took game 6 to extra innnings in '99. Kenny Rogers came in with the bases loaded in the 10th and walked Andruw Jones (I believe) in four pitches. They had Octavio Dotel left in the bullpen.

The Braves-Mets series in 99 is the only one I can recall as far as baseball is concerned (that was a classic series btw).
I haven't kept up with the NBA since the dismantling of the Bulls but I seem to recall some series involving the Utah Jazz going from 3-0 to 3-3 but the team that was up 3-0 won game 7. Then again it is the NBA, which disproves Fox's tagline of "You can't script the postseason" ;) :D
Seriously though the 1940 (?) Toronto Maple Leafs are the last (only?) team to come back from 3-0 that I know of. It would be pretty funny if the Red Sox, of all teams, are the ones to finally overcome that barrier.

This game is going to come down to one thing: Schilling's ankle. If he goes less than six, I don't think the Sox have a chance. Also, hopefully Damon will come alive and the Sox lineup can figure out a guy who baffled them earlier. I don't get it: Lieber was not even one of the Yankee's top starters all season and now Boston fears him. The difference between the Yankees and Red Sox has always boiled down to unknown Yankees (Bucky F. Dent, Aaron F. Boone, Joe F. Leiber) getting on fire in October and it's no different this year.

It makes a huge difference in Rivera's blown saves totals when they bring him in with runners on 1st and 3rd and 1 out (or 0 out, I forget what it was last night). He gave up a sac fly that tied the game. Yet he gets credited with the blown save.
Rivera rarely, if ever, comes into situations like that in the regular season. Same with Gagne. Which is why their save totals and streaks are so absurd. Just goes to show you how bullshit the save stat is, given that no 2 saves are the same.

Agreed - in another scenario, a pitcher can come in and start the ninth with his team up by 2. He could walk a couple of guys, allow a base hit, give up a run, get the final out and still get credited with a save.
If any of you have seen John Franco pitch, you then know what I mean! I really hope he retires this year.

I think that's stupid. If Schilling and the Red Sox want to risk themselves by having a liability on the field, then the Yankees have all the right to take advantage of it. It's no different then knowingly taking advantage of a poor defensive fielder or someone with a weak throwing arm.
You don't get allowances on the field just because you're injured.

Back to the stupidity of the save stat...the blown save is even stupider...it tries to assume the intent of the manager...if Gordon allows the sacrafice fly, theres no blown save because we assume that he's not in there to close the game, yet immideatly after the sac fly, it was a blown save because we assume that Mariano was in there to save the game...since any 3 innings is a save, a reliever that gives up a 4 run lead in the 6th should be charged with a blown save...its a totally imaginary stat.
Now dont get me started on the awarding of wins to relievers that give up a lead...

Gordon gets a blown save if he blows the lead, as does any reliever really. It's not about intent, its about giving up a lead. In fact, Gordon had 6 blown saves this year. Paul Quantrill had 4 blown saves. Rivera had 4. Doesn't matter who is intended to close.

I can't see why Francona doesn't start Reese, or even put him in during the late innings. A Cabrera-Reese infield combination would be stellar, and you won't sacrifice that much by taking out the struggling Belhorn.

Its not like the defense has been bad, and the hope is that Belhorn will give you better power. Of course the operative word there is hope. If the sox can actually get and keep a lead late, and by late I mean within the 9 innings, you will definitely see Reese...

10-19-04, 08:03 PM
Well, Reese can actually bunt, and Belhorn has absolutely tanked in this series. Reese's range can turn hits into outs, whereas Belhorn is significantly more limited.

Then I learned about Steinbrenner when I was 9 and hated him too.
