What bands' or musicians' albums receive the lowest ratings at AMG?
I wish there were a search engine that could take care of this. Does anyone know of a band or musician whose albums are regularly panned? I know Mellencamp's early albums, under the name John Cougar, all received 1 star, but I'd like to see some others deemed awful.

I noticed before Tool's Lateralus was released the reviews for all previous Tool albums were very poor. After Lateralus came out, all the old ones changed to positive reviews. Weird.
That doesn't really answer your question, tho...

I love the Cure, but they have a pretty poor representation on AMG from what I recall. They aren't as low as one star, but they are lower than what they should be.

Do you think that this is a problem?
I just would like to know why the hell do they change them?
This may be just another reason not to listen to anybody but yourself. If you think Wham's discography is essential and timeless, so be it.

Another thing, sometimes the detailed reviews don't match up with the star ratings. I think they're sometimes done by different people. Or maybe the star ratings are an average of several reviewers. I've read some glowing reviews that only received 2 stars and some 4 star albums received pretty poor reviews.
I'm not concerned as I use the site more for information on artists moreso than reviews. I only read the reviews for descriptions of the music.

Another thing is that AMGs ratings seem to be very genre-relative - so, if you're a fan of the particular band's genre you'll be more likely to agree with the ratings than if not. This actually relates to the old Led Zeppelin critical changeover - in the late-60s early-70s most rock critics were white middle-class men who either fell in love with the music via Elvis, The Beatles, or Dylan. Zeppelin really didn't come from any of those three artists 'heritage', were viewed as boorish, crude, loud, and stupid - everything white middle-class men want to put past them.
Now there's room for everyone. You can love pop music but hate almost all music with electric guitars. You can love rock but dismiss all metal as crap, or you can love rock and pretty much love only metal. It's a lot different than 1973, for example (the year I came of age musically).

Thanks all. I do agree that AMG's ratings are not necessarily indicative of quality and they sometimes don't even match the reviews, but I use them sometimes when deciding what to "try out".
mike, that Attila album is exactly the sort of thing I was asking about. Hilarious.

"Within each entry, to the right of the album's title, is a rating for the album itself, on a scale from one to five. These ratings are based on the artist themselves, not of their overall worth (for instance, a four-star Whitney Houston album is not necessarily the same as a four-star Black Sabbath album)."
In other words, the ratings are relative only to a particular artist's body of work.
p.s. The new layout at AMG is positively brilliant. It's the best music site on the web.

It still doesn't keep me from going there everyday, though.
A bit little back on topic, I've heard several times on this board about Rolling Stone's revisionist review of Nirvana's Nevermind, but have never read it. Anyone have a link to it somewhere?

I think that Ira Robbins was the first to review it. This came up on a different forum, and I think it was agreed that he didn't find the album to be bad, he just didn't see what was so special about it. Remember that he reviewed it before it really broke.
