Nicholls State (4-3 overall, 1-1 Southland Conference) took advantage of five turnovers by Northwestern State (5-2, 1-1), along with picking up a pivotal third-quarter safety that launched a second-half scoring outburst.

The Demons finished with 348 yards, but was overwhelmed in the third quarter, when the Colonels rang up 16 points and 139 yards and the visitors netted minus 18 yards. Prior to Thursday's game, the Colonels had just two touchdown passes all season. They doubled that total in the first quarter.

"This was a big win for our program," Colonels head coach Jay Thomas said. "We were 0-1 in the conference, facing the No. 9 team in the country and our backs were against the wall. However, we came out and executed on offense and played solid defense. The ball bounced our way tonight and we were able to dominate the game and come away with the huge victory."

Northwestern struck first by taking its opening possession 67 yards on four plays. Shelton Sampson gave the Demons a 7-0 lead on a five-yard run with 13:43 remaining in the first quarter.

The Colonels answered on their first play from scrimmage when Vannoy connected with senior David Plaisance for an 80-yard strike to tie the contest at 7-7 with 13:24 remaining in the opening quarter.

The Demons regained the lead on the ensuing possession after Demoine Clark capped off a six play 80-yard drive with a one-yard run to give the Demons a 14-7 lead with 10:58 remaining in the first quarter.

Nicholls State tied the contest at 14-14 with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter when Vannoy hooked up with Plaisance, for the second time in the contest, for a 34-yard strike.

The Colonels took the lead, 17-14, for the first time in the game when senior Jay Jones connected on a 37-yard field goal.

With the score 17-14 at the half, the Colonels padded their lead with a safety on the Demons' first offensive snap of the third quarter. Pinned at its own two after a punt, Northwestern tried a play action pass on first down but quarterback Connor Morel was called for intentional grounding while trying to avoid a sack from junior Tommy Lee Brown to make it 19-14 with 9:11 left in the third period.

The Colonels extended their lead to 26-14 when freshman tight end Jared Landrum caught a pass from Vannoy that deflected off a Demons' defender and dashed 54 yards for the score.

After two Northwestern turnovers, Nicholls State utilized the clock and drove 70 yards in eight plays capped by a 12-yard run by senior running back Colt Colletti to give the Colonels a 33-14 lead with 2:46 remaining in the third quarter.

The Colonels broke the game wide open on a 16-yard run by true freshman running back Cal Jones to give them a 40-14 lead with 14:31 remaining in the contest.

The Demons attempted a no-huddle offense for the remainder of the game, but the Colonels defense proved to be too much as they were able to shut down the Northwestern offense and seal the victory.

Nicholls State, who had the ball for 30:54 gained 382 yards on 58 plays, while the Demons had the ball for 27:34, running 68 plays for 348 yards. Vannoy led the Colonels offensively with 72 yards on 15 carries on the ground and completed 6-of-12 of his passes for 230-yards and three touchdowns through the air. Sampson led the Demons on the ground with 86 yards on 11carries and one touchdown, while Morel was 9-of-22 for 94 yards and one interception.

Brown led the Colonels defensively with six tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, one safety and two interceptions. Jamall Johnson came away with nine tackles to lead Northwestern State on defense.

Although the whole clock seemed messed up at the end.
