Ghost in the Shell (1996) Special Edition on Dec. 7th?
Amazon.com has currently listed a new DVD Release of the first Ghost in the Shell Movie for release on December 7th.
I couldn't find an announcement for this release anywhere.
Does anybody know the technical specs for this Edition or is it just a new release of the old DVD???

the GITS: Sonic Edition is a director's cut, I believe. It's longer than the previous release by several minutes.
EDIT: The previous release was 82 minutes according to imdb, and the Sonic Edition is 120 according to Amazon.
Frankly that seems a bit high so I don't know if it should be credited. Would've imagined that anime fans would scream bloody murder if GITS 1 had been cut by 28 minutes.

as far as i know the GITS dvd is january 4th... 2005. so : it was due october, then december then shifted again. the new date should be firm cos its to come around the time of innocence and the GITS videogame, and just before the reissue of the manga in an uncensored form.

it's currently listed on amazon as having a january 11th release date...
is this edition really going to be an extended cut? or was that just a mis-translated press release (as i've read on another forum)?
also, is there any word on whether or not this will be the same transfer as the japanese remastered region 2 disc that came out earlier this year? does anyone own that version that can comment on the quality of that transfer (or subtitle quality)? i'm trying to decide if it's worth skipping over the japanese version in order to wait for a region 1 dvd whose release date keeps getting continually pushed back...
any thoughts on this will be much appreciated!

"The year will end with a new beginning when, on December 7th, Manga Entertainment releases a Special Edition DVD of the movie that started it all. “Ghost in the Shell,” which was the first anime video to ever reach number one on the Billboard chart back in 1996 and has since sold over 1 million DVD and VHS units in the United States alone, will be re-released with enhanced audio/visual and language options in a feature-packed set that is sure to please even the most die-hard fans."
Sure that is has been postponed until January?

I'm not surprised if Bandai has postponed this particular title. In fact, Bandai has done the same to a number of upcoming titles, partly due to their warehouse being flooded recently (literally).

Ohhh Yeah, from davisdvd.com
Also look for the first Ghost in the Shell to be re-released on January 11th from Manga Entertainment as a new two-disc special edition. This set will include a newly remastered anamorphic digital transfer, Dolby Digital 5.1 EX and DTS-ES 6.1 soundtracks and a boatload of new bonus materials.
Another double dip for me I think! Hope that the dts track is the original track.

This is MANGA, I'm sure they'll some how screw the disc up, and the extras will suck.

I suspect that DD5.1 & DTS will be the (imho excellent) english Dub!
There is no DD5.1 Track of the original japanese language track to date.
Even the japanese SE released this spring did feature only a DD2.0Track!

I saw an article in the December issue of Anime Insider about the new SE. It says the SE will feature 5.1 audio in five languages, remastered video, trifold packaging and a poster, and a shit load of extras. Even the extras from the current version that carry over are remastered.
I'm not sure if it will actually include all five languages in 5.1 though.
