Premiere episode DVDs

I was at an Eckerd Drug store last night when I saw something kinda strange. They had these TV show "premiere episode" DVDs that were packaged in cardboard sleeves for $5.99. The ones I remember they had were the first episode of ER and the first two episodes of Gilligan's Island.

The deal is if you buy one of these, and then the complete first season set, you get a $5 rebate.

Seems like an impulse buy item to me. I doubt $6 for a single episode of a TV show is much of a deal. Your cost per episode has got to be less in the set. Plus they aren't in any kind of a case, just a cardboard sleeve.

Anyone else seen these, or bought one?

I've seen these also. They may be handy for people who have never seen a particular show before and just want to sample it before committing to an entire boxset. The 5-dollar rebate pretty much makes it free if you go onto buy the entire season set.

I should've known that, being at Eckerd, they were overpriced.

$5.99 (even $4) seems a little much for one or two episodes of a popular TV show. If you'd really never seen the series before and you just wanted to sample it before deciding if you wanted the box set, surely you could just catch an episode on TV once. I don't really see why you'd want to buy it.

Unless they had Twin Peaks.

Each of these DVDs has a rebate form (for $4 or 5, I think) if you purchase the season 1 set of that show.
