I went to the game last year at Fenway when Pedro threw Zimmer to the ground. The crowd was nuts that day. I'm expecting it to be like that, only amplified because it's yankee stadium in october.

I'm expecting him to pitch inside to Shef, which should make for an interesting game.

I hope he is lights out.

I'm glad the Yanks won Schill's start and now make Pedro's start even more important. Given all the "daddy" stuff and how poorly he's pitched and the fact it's in the Stadium it should be interesting. I think the Yanks will score some runs but I don't know if Lieber can hold the Sox down enough.

its a must win for both..... Yankees in part because you will have faced the two dominant pitchers in the game and beat them.... and for the Sox.... to give Schilling a chance to come back.....

The reason the Red Sox had a chance — maybe their best chance — of finally burying that cursed curse and the Yankees along with it was because they had Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez. And now it looks as if half of their down payment on the World Series has already been lost.

Face it, Red Sox Nation, Your chances of getting back to the World Series have come down to one man – Pedro Martinez. And if he can’t get the job done in Game 2, don’t worry about what might happen in Game 7 against the Yankees this year, because there isn’t going to be a Game 7.

It’s all on Pedro’s slim shoulders because Curt Schilling, fresh off his little speech about how much fun it would be to shut up 55,000 Yankee fans, went from Cy Young candidate to human batting tee.

He tried to push off a right ankle that’s so messed up it’s got the structural integrity of cardboard, and it didn’t work. He gave up six hits in three innings, and they weren’t nubbers, bleeders, and broken-bat singles. They were rockets off the walls and up the alleys of Yankee Stadium hit so hard they came back flat on one side.

The Red Sox came nearly all the way back, but not quite. They lost the game because Schilling can’t throw hard enough to splash water. And as a big and joyous crowd queued up on the Deegan Expressway for the long crawl home, Schilling stood in the visitor’s clubhouse in the Bronx’s highest-priced basement and did what he always does. He said exactly what he was feeling.

“If I can’t go out there with better stuff than I had tonight, then I won’t go out there,” he said, the words like blunt screwdrivers jabbed into Red Sox hearts.

That’s a big if, and one expects that a few days of rest and injections of chemicals into his ankle will make him think he can give it another go. But if the best he has to offer is 88 m.p.h. meatballs, the Red Sox are in really big trouble.

Only Pedro can save them, and he has to do it in Game 2, in the Bronx, in front of a crowd that spent half of Tuesday night practicing the ditty with which they will serenade him from first warm-up pitch to the moment he leaves the game:

“Who’s your daddy? Who’s your daddy?”

Martinez started Game 7 against the Yankees in last year’s ALCS, and that has to be the biggest game he’s ever pitched. But you can make the argument that Wednesday night in the Bronx and his Game 2 start now is even bigger.

It’s not a close-out game; he can lose and the Red Sox will still have life. But with no Schilling to rely on, no pitcher who can be counted on to deliver a big win, that life won’t be of much quality.

The Red Sox need a savior, and it has to be Pedro. It also has to be in Game 2, because then Boston can look ahead to Game 6 and figure he’ll get them a second win, which means they just need two more against a vulnerable Yankee pitching staff.

It would be nice to know what Pedro thinks of the situation he’ll be in. But we’re not going to know that, and we won’t know until after his night’s work is done, for better or worse.

It is customary for the pitcher of the next game in a series to talk before the game on that night’s agenda. Tuesday afternoon, John Lieber, the Yankees’ Game 2 starter, dutifully sat down to talk about what a thrill and an honor it will be to be handed the ball and told to go get those nasty Red Sox.

But Pedro declined to share his feelings with media and fans. He didn’t even trot onto the field when his name was called before the game, choosing to stay out of sight. He had also kissed off the interview session before his start in Anaheim in the second game of the ALDS. Then he went out and won the game.

His shyness began after he got beat late in a September game against the Yankees, when he said that the Yankees are his daddy and he didn’t know how to beat them. His teammates thought it was pretty funny when they heard about it — at least that’s what they say. They also think he’ll be just fine when he gets on the field.

“He’s going to show up on the mound,” said his manager, Terry Francona. “That’s all I care about. Whether he talks to you guys or not, I don’t personally care. I want him to pitch really, really well.”

“This guy, he’s a competitor,” said first baseman Kevin Millar. “He showed what he has left in the tank against Anaheim, and he’ll pitch tomorrow. We’re just very lucky and fortunate that we have on two days, two aces going. I think that’s what makes us so tough.”

Millar said that before the game, when Schilling was still an ace and not the deuce he would become after three innings of shelling by the Yankee offense. Afterwards, the Red Sox were down to one ace — the one who said he couldn’t figure out how to beat New York, the man whose flip comment launched a thousand back-page tabloid headlines and a new chant that rang out through the Bronx.

Had Schilling been Schilling, Pedro wouldn’t necessarily have to have won Game 2. Had Schilling just been outpitched, Pedro could still lose a tight one, because the Sox could always say Schilling wouldn’t lose another and Pedro would win the next one.

But now, with Schilling looking as if he’s shot, there is not the luxury of losing and waiting for tomorrow. The Yankee starters may not be the most awe-inspiring bunch in the world, but neither are the rest of the Sox starters. To win this series, it had to be Schilling and Pedro.

And now it’s just Pedro. He’d better be very, very good, or this series is going to be very, very short.

DVD Talk Opinion Page

Dear Mr. Dawg:

I was offended by your most recent column (though, I'm sure not half as offended as Mr. Mike Celizic was).

The basis of your argument, that "Mike Celizic should fuck off" is perplexing. Though I've never met Mr. Celizic, I'm sure he has made many mistakes in his lifetime (as we all have). But to print a scathing and hurtful, albiet brief column such as you did, was over the top and uncalled for.

Your work is just another example of the moral decay this country is experiencing. If this great nation has to go through another year of seeing Ms. Jackson's breast, hearing Howard Stern's radio show and reading who you think should "Fuck off", I don't know how we will possibly survive.

So, Mr. Dawg, I suggest that next time you think somebody should, well you know, perhaps you should keep that to yourself.

Sincerely,

Tommy_harn

Schilling could be done for postseason

In any case, Sox ace will need offseason surgery

October 13, 2004

NEW YORK -- Curt Schilling needs surgery on his injured right ankle, but the Red Sox hope he will still be able to pitch Game 5 of the AL championship series Sunday.

Schilling lasted just three innings and 58 pitches in Boston's 10-7 loss to the New York Yankees in Tuesday night's opener, allowing six runs, his poorest playoff performance since 1993.

The Red Sox said the sheath that covers a tendon in Schilling's ankle is torn.

"The tendon is snapping over the bone," Red Sox physician Dr. Bill Morgan said Wednesday.

Schilling will undergo surgery after the postseason and will need about three months to recover. If the injury occurred during the season, Morgan said Schilling would have been placed on the disabled list.

Schilling pitched with a brace Tuesday and had a shot of painkiller in the ankle. Still, he had trouble pushing off the rubber with his right leg.

The Red Sox hope a better brace will help, but if not, Schilling's season will be over.

We have to rely on Manny for that because everyone else on the roster is horrible. My prediction:

Red Sox 2 (both because of luck)

Ah...the series should still go 7 games. Sweeps and short series are bad for business, espcially with a ratings charged rivalry like Yankees/Red Sox.

10 run blow out games are bad for business too. That's why the Yankees started playing the field like they were playing Jai Alai last night.
