In France, Movie Theatres Block Mobile phone signals

So you don't get annoying mobiles going off from the idiots who leave them on.

What do you think about this ?

Means that even if you have done the right thing and got your phone on silent, you can't receive that emergency phone call. I guess though if you are expecting a call, you shouldn't be seeing a movie.

Well, we used to get on just fine without having the ability to make and receive calls while in theaters, so I think this is a-okay. If someone is truly expecting an emergency call, then they shouldn't be watching a movie at the theater anyway. For all other cases, I think this is a great thing.

That is effing awsome! From France, no less!

It's so wonderful in how much sense it makes it's so UN-French, eh? Which is why I must take this with a grain of salt.

We need confirmation from some French peeps in here on this.

I wonder what this country would do were the Power Switch to be temporarily shut off. No f'ing e-mails, cell phones, i-pods, nothing. What would people do and how long would we survive

Yeah, well in Soviet Union, Mobile phone signals block YOU.

(There's a thread in Other on this, BTW, Desmond is a little confused at the details here...)

Riv, I personally would rejoice here in Scottsdale as this area would be the first to die off according to your list of power failures. However, with my natural Viking instincts to survive, I would gladly take under my wing one of these Scottsdale bimbos.. in return for some fantastic favors I might have in mind.

France silences cinema mobiles

France will soon be the place to go to see a film, watch a play or listen to a symphony orchestra in peace without the irritating accompaniment of mobile phones.

The government announced yesterday that cinema, theatre and concert hall owners would be allowed to install jamming equipment to stop all but emergency calls.

Patrick Devedjian, a trade minister, said the measure was long overdue. Public annoyance at telephone noise was an important factor in the decline of cinema audiences.

"There will be no more trouble from those louts who let their mobiles ring in the middle of a performance."

Mr Devedjian said it would be the responsibility of the owners of places of entertainment to organise the installation of equipment which did not bar emergency calls or affect mobile phone reception outside their premises.

There was no mention of equipment capable of jamming coughs, sneezes and the crunching of popcorn.

Edward Thomas, the chairman of the British lobby group Campaign for Courtesy (formerly the Polite Society), said: "All power to the French.

"The inconsiderate use of mobile phones drives me mad.

"People should not need a law to tell them to be courteous, and once upon a time they didn't, but I am afraid that it is one of the pities of the age we live in."
