I think that he just needs to retire at the end of the season cuz unfortunately, he's not even an average player anymore.

What an uneducated assnine comment! He is still better than the average player. You have to throw the ball his way before he can catch it. No player on Earth can catch a ball thrown 20 yards to the opposite side of the field. Raiders are losers for not still using him in their offense. He's my favorite player and the greatest reciever ever bar none. I wouldn't mind seeing him change teams and get used in an offense.

your skills decline when you age. Unfortunately, that's what has happened to Rice.
He's over 40 years old. Since last year, his skills have been in severe decline. Many games, they had to just throw to him early so he would keep his streak alive.
Roy Jones Jr. was the best boxer of his time but he's aged so his skills have declined to make him a shell of his former self. The same can be said about Jerry Rice.
Hell, even Jordan's skills declined with age. It happens to EVERYONE....well, except Barry Bonds.

Not that it will happen, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Giants pick him up for the rest of this year. We just lost our deep threat, Tim Carter, for the year. The Giants have put themselves in position for a playoff run, and no doubt he could help.

If I were in Detroit, I would really want this trade to happen. I think Rice is still good enough to contribute.

I don't see how Rice helps replace a deep threat though, he's basically a possession receiver at best these days. Although I too am a Rice fan, I don't see him being particularly useful to anyone. Oh sure, he can catch a few balls here and there, but like Antonio Freeman or other bigger name guys bouncing around the last few years, the real impact is minimal.

Make sure if you pick him up that he is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year. That way you don't look like an ass for cutting the great Jerry Rice, and no one else will want him either, so he can just retire.

I would love to see Jerry Rice on the Lions. Charles Rogers is gone for the year again and Jerry Rice would be able to get some attention off Roy Williams...Jerry's way past his prime, but I think he'll be able to contribute nicely.

It's not like the Lions have all the pieces to win a Super Bowl this year, but I think the Rice can contribute to this team get a winning attitude and possibly make the Lions respectable.

Jerry Rice is washed up. I hope he can catch balls and control his walker at the same time.
He might be the best receiver of all time, but there's a reason the Raiders don't throw to him on every down.

A few weeks ago I was in a sports bar in Fresno, CA. It is the same distance to Oakland and San Francisco. The people in there were rooting for the Raiders and against the Niners. I was shocked. I always thought that everyone is a closet Raiders fan just because of the mystique of the team but in Cali I really expected the people to support the Niners, given that teams history. I guess pro football in California just sucks for it's population right now.

Was it the big one next to the movie theater(name?)? If so i have been there many many times and IMO it's a great place to kick it have a beer and watch the game.
In my experience fresno is the dividing line. In fresno you have a mix of LAKER/Dodger fans and Giants/KIngs fans. South of fresno it's mostly Laker/Dodger fans north of fresno Giants/Kings fans.
P.S. I dont know how this relates to football or Jerry rice but i just wanted to share.;)

A favorite shirt amongst the Raiders nation it one that states: "My two favorite teams are the Raiders, and whoever's playing the 9er's." :D I could explain how it came to be this way, but when you break it down it's just a Hatfield's and McCoy's kinda thing.
As to the Jerry situtation, from what I hear the two most likely trades are TB and SEA. DET was never even interested according to their PR. Which I doubt cause why would we have even heard anything if they didn't have someone say something.

I am a tried and true Oakland fan, always have been, always will be. When Jerry came over to the Raiders, I thought it was great that he could spend his last year in the bay area. He was 39 at the time and one of the oldest players in the league. About all he was good for was a 10-15 yd route and no run afterwards. Still, it was great having the best wide receiver in the history of the game in the Silver and Black.
Then he decided to stay on last year after the devastating Super Bowl. Jerry Porter was a holdout and he had an okay season with Tim Brown holding down the fort. I'm sure that many were hoping that he would retire last year. I wish he would announce his retirement now. Now is the time for the Raiders to bring in new talent and get them some experience. It's apparent that they have no playoff hopes this season and they should allow Jerry to go out to the pasture.
It seems like it is always this way with living legends. Michael Jordan didn't know when to quit, Cal Jr. Didn't know when to quit.
Retire this week Jerry, Oakland will give you the send off you deserve.
Rice...even though he has been a big thuggish since going to the Raiders...is still THE best receiver to ever play. his work ethic is unquestioned, and almost every player will say that even talking with Rice has made them a better player. He will help out that receiving corp. ALOT...some on the field, some off.

If Rice has anything left, and I'm not sure he does, Seattle seems to be the perfect fit for him. At least he shouldn't drop every pass like most of their receivers. Now can he get open consistently anymore? We'll have to see on that one...

Sounds like with Koren Robinson facing a 4 game suspension, the Rice deal is done.

For a 7th round pick? No problem. Welcome to Seattle, Jerry
I'll take him over whoever they have sitting on the bench while Koren Robinson is suspended. Even with all the dropped passes over the last couple years between Robinson and Jackson, they've never been benched for anybody else.
Kinda weird seeing the guy who broke all of Steve Largent's records in a Seahawk uniform though. Also kinda weird that when Largent was breaking the records, Rice was doing what Randy Moss does now.

I think it's great he's going to Seattle. Hey can provide some veteran leadership and hopefully help that problem that the Seahawks recievers seem to have holding on to the football. I wonder if he's going to wear #80 though. Did they ever retire Steve Largent's number?

Now Koren Robinson and Darrell Jackson can learn a thing or two, even if Jerry is a year or two away from collecting Social Security.

#80 has already been retired in Seattle for Steve Largent
Steve has come out and said he would not have a problem with Jerry wearing his number
although I think its time for Rice to change numbers

Darrell Jackson did his weekly local radio segment this afternoon. Sounds like he's the one that would fail a drug test. He didn't sound excited at all about Rice joining the team. He tried to say the right things, but he sounded down on the whole idea. It's not like he's going to take your spot Darrell -rolleyes-
I don't think Rice will have a problem changing numbers. He was around when Largent broke all those records. I don't see why he'd care that much about what his number is for the Seahawks unless Largent tells him personally to go ahead and wear it.

Rice was #88 in college
that number is currently taken by one of seattle's tightends

They're doing a press conference with Rice and Holmgren. I think he said that he wasn't going to wear number 80, but I'm not sure. It was the first thing he said and I wasn't listening that closely. I just caught him saying, "...number 80, out of respect for him."
Edit: I guess he didn't say anything definitive about it because they are taking calls about if he should wear #80 or not. He probably said it's up to Largent, so I guess he'll end up with 80.

EDIT: Oops, can't read. So the number was retired, but Rice will wear it anyways. Since I doubt Rice plays more than 10 games (plus playoffs) for the Seahawks, I guess it's no big deal. It's not like its a several year thing

His skills maybe have declined with age but he is still better than half the recievers today if you just throw the damn ball his way. Tonight you saw that despite his age he can still get the job done if given the chance. Don't throw somebodys way and no matter how good they are they can't catch it. That is what had been happening with the Raiders.

you guys need to remember, QBs don't just not throw the ball to open guys cause they don't want to. if he's not getting the ball, then it is most likely because when he is in there, he isn't creating space.
