We haven't had one of these in a while.

Anyhow, here's the Kleptone's A Night at the Hip Hopera (http://www.waxy.org/archive/2004/09/23/kleptone.shtml). All the individual tracks, as well as 1 big zip file (http://waxy.org/random/audio/kleptones_opera/The%20Kleptones%20-%20A%20Night%20At%20The%20Hip-Hopera.zip), are being mirrored at this site.

Nice stuff.

Thanks! This'll keep me busy today.

I'm sure it's been asked before and I'm too lazy to search (here and on google), but what are some good mashup websites?

Also, any more good album-length mashups (like the Queen one above and the various Jay-Z vs. _____ ones)?

Better get it soon, folks. Disney's been sending cease and desist letters (http://www.waxy.org/archive/2004/11/17/disney_s.shtml) to have it taken down, but other sites are mirroring it for the time being.

Stevevt, holy shit, yr the google god! I've been looking for the Purple Album!

Do either of you know who did a mash-up of Tweet's "Oops (Oh My)" with XTC's "Making Plans for Nigel?" It's totally sweet. I just got a mash-up 12" in the mail the other day -- Beck's "Debra" and Pharrell's "Frontin'." If I can find someone with analog-to-digital recording equipment, I'll g-mail it or dropload it to somebody with webspace. I think that it'd interest a lot of people here.

And I just found out that Kno (maker of the totally awesome White Albulum) used the Os Mutantes' "Ave, Lucifer" for his remix of "Lucifer."

Isn't this the song that uses a bunch of different intros? If so, thanks! My old laptop's hard drive crashed over the summer and I thought that I had lost that song forever.

Nice find.

Also along the same lines (mixtape), I recommend hunting down Uneasy Listening Vol. 1 by DJ Z-Trip and DJ P. It is by far my favorite mix CD. I bought it a couple of years ago, but I'm sure it's available in the usual places. If you want it on vinyl, they've got it at http://www.hiphopsite.com.

Whoa - just checked ebay. I could make a small fortune if I sold my copy.

Funn you should mention Uneasy Listening. I've was going to recommend and/or link to that in my last post, since I've had it in heavy rotation the last few weeks. After a search, I realized it was a for-pay thing, so I skipped it. But I agree that it's very good.

Would a video mash-up between the Beatles and the Monkees* be cool? If so, yes:

Could this be where it all started? I'm checking out Plunderphonics 69/96 right now, and it's certainly living up to the hype. More avante-garde than most of the stuff in this thread, but certainly deserves a mention here.

This is it: the ultimate collection of John Oswald's Plunderphonics. All the missing pieces, all the essentials, and all the tracks that executives of the record industry tried to erase are included on this two-CD box set. Oswald has been working on his techniques and esthetics of sound collaging since 1969, but was mostly active in this field during the late '80s/early '90s. He pushed the notion of sound collage to an artistic level barely imagined before him, while raising a number of issues on plagiarism and the notion of copyright. Here, all the tracks listeners have heard about but were never able to find have been gathered, along with excerpts from works that remain available elsewhere. Disc one focuses on songs (i.e., tracks in which lyrics [or at least syllables and phonemes] play a part): from the cannibalized Carly Simon/Faster Pussycat "Vane" to the androgynous voice of Dolly Parton ("Pretender," where she sings a duet with a slower version of herself) and the infamous "Dab," a reworking of Michael Jackson's "Bad." Disc two is comprised of tunes, where the sonic material comes from classical, jazz, and more. Highlights include the revised "Sunrise" from Richard Strauss' "Also Spracht Zarathustra" (titled "Z24"), the three "Birth" pieces, and the exhilarating "Mach," where the Kronos Quartet battles with a heavy metal band. The cut-up h÷rspiel "Case of Death" acts like a bridge between the two discs. Record collectors who managed to put a hand on the shortly available original recordings can breathe Ś most of the tracks show slight differences, such as remixing, editing, and sequencing. All pieces segue, sometimes with tricky interludes hidden in the index of the CD track. The 48-page book accompanying the set contains historical and technical comments from the composer for each of the 62 pieces. Ending in 1996, like Greyfolded: 1969-1996, this collection is definitive and closes a very important cycle in Oswald's musical activities. Plunderphonics 69/96 is must-have for any serious avant-garde fan.

It's a bit old, so I'm surprised it hasn't surfaced on this board: Yoshimi Battles the Hip-Hop Robots put together by the Kleptones (who did A Night at the Hip-Hopera) - instrumentals from the Flaming Lips album spliced with rhymes from the Pharcyde, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, 50 Cent, and others.

Here is a link to the bit torrent file (http://www.kleptones.com/pages/The%20Kleptones%20-%20Yoshimi%20Battles%20The%20Hip-Hop%20Robots.torrent).

The Kleptones have other stuff on their site (http://www.kleptones.com/pages/downloads.html).

What's a mash-up?

A mash-up is when a DJ takes two (or more) songs and mixes them together. Most of the time the music styles are very different.

For example. here is one I found by searching Yahoo ..

http://viprhealthcare.typepad.com/mashup_of_the_week_podcas/files/Spending%20one%20of%20these%20nights%20with%20Kelly%20.mp3

Eagles (One of These Nights) and Kelly Clarkson (Since You've Been Gone). While I think it starts nicely, it kinda loses it near the middle.

bump.

i'm surprised this was never posted here.. this isn't new. apparently it was first released in November, but i'm just finding out about it now.

the other night at a bar, i heard a great mash-up of Green Day's 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams' with Oasis' 'Wonderwall'. it was really, really well done, and the songs fit really well together. i'm a pretty big fan of mash-ups (when they're good), and i'm a HUGE fan of Green Day's American Idiot album.

so this morning, i finally remembered to hit up google, and not only did i find the mash-up i was looking for, but i found an entire album done by the same dj - American Edit.

apparently he had a site up for 10 days before getting a cease and desist from Green Day's label.. but it's out there, if you know where to look for such things.

i downloaded it yesterday, and listened to it twice through last night.. while i don't like ALL of the mixes, i do have to say that the entire thing is really, really well done. the Wonderwall/Boulevard Of Broken dreams mash is definitely one of the best on there. i'm also a big fan of the Give Me Novacaine/Bohemian Rhapsody mash, and the Whatsername/Manic Monday mash is flat out awesome.

Summer Of '69 is mashed with Jesus Of Suburbia right where it should be.. definitely noticed that the very first time i listened to JOS. i guess my only gripe with the project is that Homecoming was completely left off, and it's one of my favorite songs on American Idiot. other than that, i was really impressed by American Edit.

Thanks for the heads-up on American Edit. I found it last night. Good stuff.

Here are a few more album-length mashups:

Hippocamp Ruins Pet Sounds (http://www.autistici.com/petsounds.htm) (I think this one may be more of a remix album than mashups - I'm not really familiar with the music under the vocals)

London Booted (http://www.prankmonkeyrecords.co.uk/) (this one's legit as it has the Clash's blessing and is sold in stores; just streams on this site)

Santastic (http://www.djbc.net/christmas/) (for your next hipster Christmas party; put up by the guy who did the Beastles mix)

There's also one I stumbled on - Me & This Army - of Radiohead mashups. Samples and purchase info here (http://www.tokenrecluse.com/) (but if you know where to look...).

What about those songs that are two songs that sound very similar to each other combined so they expose the fact that one band ripped off the other band or they both lack originality or whatever? I thought the term for that was mashup, but apparently that's the term for djs mixing two records smoothly or whatever. Anyone know what I'm talking about?
